Luis Diaz leaves Liverpool training camp after £65.5m transfer breakthrough
Luis Diaz is leaving Liverpool's pre-season tour in Tokyo after the Reds agreed a £65.5m deal with Bayern Munich to sell the wantaway Colombian.
Diaz, 28, has been given permission to leave the club's training camp in Japan to seal a move to the German giants which has been 12 months in the making.
The Reds' No.7 has been pushing for a move to Munich after informing the Reds' hierarchy that he wants to leave this summer. His decision came after the club refused to enter contract negotiations.
Diaz and his representatives have been after a new contract for over a year, believing him to be comparatively underpaid on Merseyside, having still been on the same basic terms since arriving on Merseyside in a £37m move from Porto in January 2022.
Diaz had initially hoped to stay at the club, where he was an important figure in last season's Premier League triumph. But Kop bosses had been unwilling to open discussions over an improved deal, given he still had two years remaining on his contract, a decision that led to frustration with Diaz and his representatives, and duly saw them push to depart.
Diaz missed Liverpool's 4-2 defeat in a friendly with AC Milan on Saturday as they continue their pre-season tour of Asia. Arne Slot confirmed post-match that Diaz was absent due to his uncertain future but insisted that he's been training well.
Following the loss against Milan, Slot was asked if both the 28-year-old and team-mate Darwin Nunez's absences were linked to potential transfers.
"In Lucho's situation it was, yeah," the Liverpool boss told reporters. "There are a lot of rumours around it lately and I cannot go into that. But he is training really well with us and we have decided, for now, not to play him yet.
"In Darwin's situation, he has trained really well also and played a few good games for us already this pre-season. He was injured so we didn't want to take the risk and it was also the same with Wataru Endo, trained with us all week but we didn't want to take a risk with him either.
Liverpool rejected an opening bid from Bayern worth £58.5m last week. But Vincent Kompany's side have been determined to sign Diaz and are now set to get their man. Bayern made an improved offer of £65.5m over the weekend which Liverpool have now accepted.
Bayern boss Kompany spoke to Diaz during a recent video call and outlined his plans for Diaz. The German giants have been desperate to sign a forward after missing out on top target Florian Wirtz - a race won by Liverpool - and having lost both Leroy Sane and Thomas Muller this summer on free transfers. They are also facing a considerable period without Jamal Musiala due to injury.
Diaz will depart Anfield having scored 41 goals in 148 appearances for Liverpool.

Transfer news live: Liverpool target Isak after Diaz deal, Arsenal want Eze, Man Utd latest
Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United are among the clubs striking major deals as the summer transfer window nears its final month. Liverpool have signed Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt in a £79m deal having beaten off interest from Newcastle to secure his signature. The Reds have also agreed to sell Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich which could challenge the resolve of Newcastle who are holding firm in their valuation of Alexander Isak. Isak has requested to 'explore his options' away from the club with a move to Liverpool seemingly the likeliest destination as the Premier League champions aim to strengthen their forward line. Arsenal have completed the signing of Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres, closing out a deal worth £63m for the forward who was unveiled as a new Gunner during their pre-season match against Newcastle on Sunday. The Gunners have also confirmed the signing of Cristhian Mosquera in defence and have their sights on Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze. Elsewhere, Manchester United have completed the signing of Bryan Mbeumo who joins Matheus Cunha in Ruben Amorim's new-look attack though the manager is still hopeful of securing a No.9 before the start of the season. Marcus Rashford has completed a loan move to Barcelona while Jadon Sancho is drawing interest from Juventus as the club also focus on outgoings. Meanwhile, Chelsea have their sights on a Dutch duo of Xavi Simons and centre-back Jorrel Hato. Arsenal ramp up bid for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze Arsenal are aiming to swiftly move to secure Crystal Palace 's Eberechi Eze now that the deal for Sporting 's Viktor Gyokeres is complete. Mikel Arteta 's side are Eze's top choice, as has previously been reported by The Independent, and those close to the player are confident a deal will be done in the next few weeks. Arsenal are hoping to agree a fee that comes to £60m, rather than the reported £68m clause, although on terms that are also amenable to Palace. Although there has not yet been any formal contact between the two clubs, the suggestions are that both will be flexible, amid good relations between the two boardrooms. The 27-year-old has signed a five-year contract. The purchase marks the end of an 18-month hunt for a number-nine from Arsenal, who have been insistent on signing a goalscorer for the 'here and now'. Gyokeres' arrival also marks the end of a hard period of negotiations with Sporting, who were insistent on more achievable add-ons. At one point, the deal dragged on and stalled over a potential add-on of €5m. United made the inquiry on Thursday evening but were told that Watkins 'is not for sale'. Watkins is just one of a few strikers United have looked at along with others including Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson and RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko. With a valuation of around £60m, Watkins is one of the cheaper options United are exploring and has proven Premier League quality. If they do pursue a deal then it will be difficult to convince Villa to part ways with their man. Conor Coady sees Leicester close Rangers escape route as wait for key transfer trigger continues
Russell Martin and sporting director Kevin Thelwell have been keen on the centre-back throughout the summer Boss Marti Cifuentes has dropped a major hint that he wants to keep Conor Coady at the club amid interest from Rangers. The defender has been a target at Ibrox all summer - with both the Scottish Premiership giants and Coady had keen to make a deal happen. The England cap had been keen to link up with Russell Martin in time for the Champions League qualification double-header against Panathinaikos. However, he has remained with the Foxes following the arrival of Cifuentes as they prepare for the English Championship campaign after Premier League relegation. The 32-year-old has remained as captain going into the new season - and was handed his first 90 minutes of pre-season during the 3-1 defeat to Cologne. With the league opener against Sheffield Wednesday less than two weeks away, Cifuentes admits that the players handed a run-out for the full game are being considered as starters this term. Cifuentes told club media: 'According to where we are in pre-season, it will be a direct competition from day one to see who would be in the starting line-up against Sheffield Wednesday. "It must be a healthy competition between all the players. Today has been a step forward in the right direction in that sense. 'In the first game I wanted to share minutes to give an opportunity to everyone. But today was about as many players as possible getting 90 minutes. It will be very valuable. 'It's not only in terms of approaching the next couple of weeks, but as well for me learning about where we are as a team.' The Leicester Mercury report that Coady will only be allowed to leave the King Power Stadium if the cash-strapped club can find a replacement. The Foxes have yet to make their first signing of the summer with reports south of the border suggesting goalkeeper Asmir Begovic could be coming through the door before a new centre-back. It is noted that an experienced replacement for Coady is on the agenda - but appears to be some way off at this stage of the window.
