Will Donald Trump break up Ukraine into pieces and give Crimea and two big cities to Russia? What is US' plan?

New Delhi: The Russia-Ukraine War intensified in February 2022 after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine and began occupying more of the country, starting the biggest conflict in Europe since World War II. The war has resulted in a refugee crisis and thousands of deaths. After more than three years, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Alaska, USA, on August 15, to stop the Russia-Ukraine war. While the presidents were engaged in high-stakes talks over the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Russia's advanced ballistic missiles wreaked havoc on Ukraine. What is the status of Crimea, Donetsk, and Luhansk? The Russia-Ukraine war is the biggest conflict in Europe since World War II, which has resulted in a refugee crisis and thousands of deaths. The economies of both countries have suffered badly, especially Ukraine's. Russia has captured many areas and is on the verge of capturing more territories. Ukraine was assured by the United States that it would become a member of the USA-led NATO, but now, US President Donald Trump is asking Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to surrender Crimea and other big cities like Donetsk and Luhansk to Russia. Is Trump leaving Zelensky at the mercy of Putin? It is believed that Donald Trump can talk about this proposal in the meeting with Zelensky on Monday, 18 August 2025. In this way, Ukraine itself is now seen moving towards a loss-making deal, which had decided to fight a long battle with Russia at the instigation of America and NATO countries. Not only this, news outlets like CNN and New York Times have considered the meeting held in Alaska as a defeat for Donald Trump from a diplomatic point of view. The American media says that this meeting has given Vladimir Putin and Russia a chance to come into the mainstream. Apart from this, Donald Trump has held the meeting on Putin's terms. Does Trump want Zelensky to accept Putin's terms and surrender? Not only this, but Donald Trump wants Ukraine to agree to a ceasefire on the same terms that Vladimir Putin has laid down. The situation is such that Zelensky himself has admitted that Putin's meeting with Trump is a message of victory for Russia. At present, Zelensky has decided to take European leaders along with him to the meeting with Trump. It is believed that this meeting can also be quite tumultuous.

Youth Congress stages protest against ‘vote theft' in Kalaburagi

Alleging large-scale electoral malpractice in the country, the Kalaburagi District Youth Congress on Sunday staged a demonstration against what it termed 'vote theft' by the Election Commission of India (ECI) at the behest of the ruling BJP at the Centre. As part of a campaign, agitating activists, led by District Youth Congress president Shakeel Saradagi, displayed posters at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Circle in the city and raised slogans against the ECI, saying that it is acting at the behest of the BJP-led Union government instead of maintaining its impartiality as a Constitutional body. 'The ECI is functioning like a puppet in the hands of the ruling BJP instead of acting as an independent constitutional body. The Congress leadership, including All India Congress Committee president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, has repeatedly raised questions about the fairness of elections. Rather than answering them, the Election Commission is intimidating Opposition parties. This is unacceptable in a democracy,' Mr. Saradagi said. He added that the campaign is intended to remind citizens that every vote matters. 'Ours is a country of nearly 100 crore voters. Each individual has the right to cast one vote freely and fearlessly. Our movement is about protecting that basic democratic principle. If we allow 'vote theft' to go unchecked, we will weaken the very foundation of our republic,' he said. Several Youth Congress leaders present at the event echoed the call for vigilance. Eeranna Patil Jhalaki said that their poster campaign is an attempt to take the message directly to ordinary people. 'We want the youth, women and first-time voters to know that their right cannot be compromised. Democracy survives only when every citizen participates honestly,' he remarked. Another leader Amar Shirwal observed that creating awareness is as important as raising slogans. 'Our fight is not just against the BJP but against the erosion of democratic values. By standing together, we can ensure that no one dares to snatch away people's votes,' he said. The gathering saw the participation of a number of Youth Congress leaders, including Parashuram Natikar, Umar Junaidi, Raju Malgi, Ganesh Naganahalli, Sanghpal Kamble, Aslam Sindgi and Karthik Hosamani, who pledged to intensify the awareness drive across the district in the weeks to come.

Trump says he will move to end mail-in ballots and voting machines ahead of 2026 midterms

US President Donald Trump on Monday said he would sign an executive order ahead of the 2026 midterm elections to eliminate mail-in voting and electronic voting machines across the country. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: 'I am going to lead a movement to get rid of mail-in ballots, and also voting machines, which cost far more than paper ballots. Paper is faster and leaves no doubt, at the end of the evening, about who won and who lost the election.' He claimed the United States was 'the only country in the world that uses mail-in voting' and argued that other nations had dropped the practice because of fraud. 'We will begin this effort, which will be strongly opposed by the Democrats, by signing an executive order to help bring honesty to the 2026 midterm elections,' Trump added. Trump also wrote that the states must follow federal instructions on counting ballots. 'The states are merely an agent for the federal government in counting and tabulating the votes. They must do what the federal government, as represented by the president, tells them to do, for the good of our country,' he said. Trump repeated his view that Democrats rely on mail-in voting to win elections, citing policies he opposes. 'Elections can never be honest with mail-in ballots and voting machines, and everybody, in particular the Democrats, knows this. I, and the Republican Party, will fight to bring honesty and integrity back to our elections,' he wrote. The comments come after Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, during which Trump said the two agreed on ending mail-in balloting. Trump has long promoted the false claim that he won the 2020 election over Democrat Joe Biden and has pressed Republicans to pursue changes to the US voting system. He himself has voted by mail in past elections, and even encouraged supporters to do so in 2024. Earlier this year, Trump signed a March 25 executive order aimed at altering election procedures, but it was blocked by courts after Democrat-led states sued. Elections in the United States are run individually by each of the 50 states, though Trump has continued to insist the federal government should set the rules.
