Oscar-winning director Francis Ford Coppola in Rome hospital for planned surgery, not emergency, says rep
LOS ANGELES, Aug 6 — Francis Ford Coppola, the acclaimed American director of 'The Godfather' movies and 'Apocalypse Now,' underwent a non-emergency medical procedure by appointment on Tuesday at a hospital in Rome and is doing fine, according to a US-based representative. 'Mr. Coppola went in for a scheduled update procedure with acclaimed Dr Andrea Natale, his doctor of over 30 years, and is resting nicely,' the representative said in response to Italian media reports that the director was hospitalised. 'All is well.' The 86-year-old filmmaker was admitted to the Policlinico Tor Vergata, a public hospital in the Italian capital, news agency ANSA reported. The US based representative declined to give any details about the nature of Coppola's medical procedure, but said: 'There was not an emergency. He went to the hospital in a car.' The representative specifically disputed as 'not true' a report from the Italian website that Coppola had suffered atrial fibrillation, a type of irregular heartbeat, before entering the operating room for what was to have been a long-planned surgical procedure. A spokesperson for the hospital did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. Coppola was in Italy to promote his latest movie, the sci-fi epic 'Megalopolis,' a US$120 million self-funded production about a visionary architect's quest to transform a fictional future version of New York City called New Rome into a utopian community. The film, which has drawn mixed reviews and struggled at the box office following its 2024 debut at the Cannes Film Festival, was reported to have received a special screening at the Magna Graecia Film Festival in Catanzaro, Italy. The Italian-American director, who has won five Academy Awards, three of four of them for his work on the first two films in 'The Godfather' trilogy, widely considered by cinema buffs to rank among the greatest movies of all time. — Reuters

Lindsay Lohan comes full circle with ‘Freakier Friday'
Lindsay Lohan at the premiere of the film 'Freakier Friday' on July 31 in London. (Invision/AP pic) LONDON : Lindsay Lohan said she drew upon her own experiences of motherhood for 'Freakier Friday', the highly-anticipated sequel to her hit 2003 movie 'Freaky Friday'. Lohan, 39, welcomed her first child in 2023, a year before the Disney movie was filmed. 'It felt full circle for me, and also the timing was pretty impeccable considering that I'm a new mom and I was able to bring being a mom into the character,' Lohan said at the film's London premiere on Thursday. 'It's the first time I'm able to do that on screen.' 'Freaky Friday', with a reported budget of US$26 million, was a surprise hit, making over US$160 million worldwide and obtaining a cult following. The 2025 follow-up sees Lohan and actress Jamie Lee Curtis reprising the roles of mother and daughter duo Tess and Anna Coleman. Twenty years on, Anna is a single parent to tomboy teen daughter Harper, played by Julia Butters. Their relationship comes under stress when Anna falls for Eric (Manny Jacinto), the father of Harper's new British classmate Lily (Sophia Hammons), and they decide to get married. The future stepsisters, with a mutual dislike for one another, decide to intervene. While the 2003 film saw a body swap between Tess and Anna, things get 'freakier' this time around with Tess and Anna switching bodies with Lily and Harper. Before signing on to the sequel, Lohan ensured that Anna returned as a multi-faceted and relatable character. 'It was important to me that we explained who Anna is today and how she's evolved and the dynamic between her and her daughter as she's a single working mom. 'There are some basic points that I wanted to get across because I want people to see the movie and find a piece of it that they can grab onto and be like, 'okay, I get that',' she said. Directed by Nisha Ganatra, the movie also sees actor Chad Michael Murray reprising the role of young Anna's love interest, Jake. Shooting the sequel was a 'lovefest', said Murray. 'It was the same, but better. It felt very much like connective tissue to the first movie. Everyone loved going to work and no one wanted to go home.' 'Freakier Friday' marks Lohan's big screen return. 'It's obviously nerve-wracking because you want it to be great and you want people to love what you do,' she said. 'As long as people are enjoying what I'm doing and it's making them happy, then I feel like I'm doing my job and that's what I'm here to do,' she added. 'Freakier Friday' begins its global cinematic rollout on Aug 6.

‘Musical cocoon': In Polish mountain town where Chopin first played abroad, music lovers return for 80th festival
DUSZNIKI ZDROJ (Poland), Aug 5 — A few hundred people gather in front of a large white tent in the peaceful spa town of Duszniki-Zdroj, nestled on the Polish-Czech border. Inside, the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra is preparing to open the 80th edition of the International Chopin Piano Festival. 'I've loved Chopin for so many years!' said Erin Gao, a 33-year-old from China, who travelled to hear the composer's works while vacationing in Europe. Mike Righton, a 73-year-old from Texas, shared that enthusiasm. I love this festival — there are lots of concerts, and the place is very pretty,' he said. Organisers expect around 2,000 spectators over the nine-day event that runs until August 9 in this town of just 4,000 residents, where Frederic Chopin's legacy is visible everywhere. 'Above all, this festival brings together true enthusiasts of Chopin's music,' said Piotr Paleczny, the festival's artistic director. Streets are adorned with posters and statues of the composer and shops welcome tourists with souvenirs bearing his image. The chairs are arranged to welcome the audience under a portrait of Frederic Chopin in the concert hall of the so-called Chopin Manor on the second day of the 80th Duszniki International Chopin Piano Festival in Duszniki Zdroj, southwestern Poland, August 2, 2025.
