Malaysian students abroad urged to embrace cultural exchange

The Sun6 days ago
WELLINGTON: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called on Malaysian students overseas to actively participate in local communities, emphasising the importance of cultural exchange beyond academic pursuits.
Speaking at a gathering with over 250 Malaysian students and residents in New Zealand, Ahmad Zahid highlighted the value of learning from indigenous cultures, particularly the Maori community.
'Don't just learn from inside the lecture rooms, tutorials, or professors' offices. We should also introduce ourselves to the local communities and learn their cultures, especially the Maori culture here, which is rich with historical values and a spirit of resilience,' he said.
The event was attended by Malaysia's High Commissioner to New Zealand Mazita Marzuki, alongside official delegates and senior government officers.
Ahmad Zahid praised the Maori community's ability to preserve their heritage while managing economic assets through trust agencies since the 19th century.
'We need to learn from their spirit and strength in fighting for their rights and adapt that to the Malaysian context, especially in empowering the Orang Asli communities,' he added.
The deputy prime minister also commended students sponsored by agencies like JPA, MARA, GLCs, and GLICs for maintaining a positive image abroad.
He stressed that social integration and cultural awareness are crucial in shaping competitive graduates ready to contribute to Malaysia's development.
Addressing career prospects, Ahmad Zahid acknowledged that salaries in Malaysia may be lower than in countries like New Zealand but urged students in critical fields such as engineering, law, and accounting to return home. 'East or west, home is best,' he remarked.
To support the Malaysian diaspora, Ahmad Zahid announced a NZ$100,000 (RM251,000) allocation to Rumah Malaysia for National Day celebrations. - Bernama

SejaTi MADANI Initiative: Over 1,000 Grant Applications Received, 668 Projects Approved

KOTA BHARU, July 23 (Bernama) -- The SejaTi MADANI initiative continues to record encouraging success in Kelantan, with a total of 1,135 grant applications received as of yesterday from communities across the state. The Kelantan Federal Development Office of the Implementation Coordination Unit, Prime Minister's Department (ICU JPM), in a statement today, said that out of the total, 668 projects had been approved and were currently being implemented, reflecting the people of Kelantan's strong commitment to empowering the local economy through various community projects. 'For the year 2024 alone, 1,065 applications have been received, with 523 projects approved and carried out. The increase in applications this year proves the public's growing awareness and confidence in the potential of the SejaTi MADANI programme to support community-based economic development. 'Five key sectors have been the main focus of grant applications, namely agriculture and food, tailoring and handicrafts, herbs and health, tourism and hospitality, as well as green and recycling activities. The agriculture and food sector recorded the highest number of applications, showing the community's inclination to making it a stable and sustainable source of income,' the statement read. According to ICU JPM, the districts of Tumpat, Kubang Kerian, Bachok and Pasir Puteh recorded the highest number of applications, reflecting strong interest and active participation of the community in seizing the opportunities offered by the initiative. The SejaTi MADANI programme empowers grassroots communities to plan and implement projects that suit their needs with grant support of up to RM100,000. 'Among the projects that have recorded notable achievements are the stingless bee farming project by the Tasek Berangan Community Organisation in Pasir Mas, which produces high-quality stingless bee honey for the local market and has the potential to be expanded as an agro-tourism product,' ICU JPM said. In addition, corn and vegetable farming in Kampung Paloh, Tanah Merah, and seedless watermelon cultivation in Kampung Air Tawar, Semerak, Pasir Puteh have also achieved success. 'The implementation of this programme is expected to continue serving as a key platform in sustainably empowering the people of Kelantan economically,' read the statement.

Groups warn of productivity losses from Sept 15 additional public holiday

The Malaysian Employers Federation said while it appreciates national celebrations and commemorations, such observances must be balanced with economic realities and the long-term competitiveness of Malaysian businesses. PETALING JAYA : An employers' group and a business association have expressed concern over the impact the additional public holiday on Sept 15 may have on business operations. In a televised address today, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that Sept 15 would be designated as an additional public holiday in conjunction with Malaysia Day. In a statement to FMT, the Malaysian Employers Federation said the extra public holiday warrants careful reconsideration because of its financial and operational impact as such holidays disrupt production schedules, logistics chains, and service continuity. 'This disruption results in lower output, delays in fulfilling delivery commitments, increased costs from rescheduling or deferring operations, and reduced overall productivity, especially for SMEs already operating on tight margins,' MEF said. It also said additional public holidays translate to increased wage bills, with preliminary estimates suggesting that each extra holiday could cost Malaysian employers over RM1 billion collectively. MEF said the practice of declaring ad hoc public holidays, often without broad stakeholder consultation, may affect Malaysia's image as a predictable and business-friendly destination. Noting that investors seek clarity and certainty in policymaking, it warned that repeated instances of surprise public holidays risk undermining investor confidence, particularly among foreign investors. 'While MEF appreciates national celebrations and commemorations, such observances must be balanced with economic realities and the long-term competitiveness of Malaysian businesses,' it said. In a separate statement, Small and Medium Enterprises Association (Samenta) president William Ng said that while he appreciates the symbolic importance of celebrating Malaysia Day, additional public holidays, especially those announced on short notice, can be disruptive for SMEs. He said the added holiday would increase costs for SMEs in terms of lost productivity, overtime pay, and delivery delays. 'We urge the government to conduct impact assessments before declaring unscheduled holidays,' he said. Ng also welcomed the encouraging economic indicators shared by Anwar in his address, particularly stronger GDP growth, improved global competitiveness rankings, and a more stable ringgit. 'However, we urge the government to ensure that the benefits of this growth are meaningfully felt by the SME sector, which continues to face persistent challenges in accessing financing, addressing labour shortages, and adapting to rising operational costs,' he said. He also called for greater support to help SMEs manage cost pressures, particularly through wage subsidies, targeted tax relief, and automation grants. Earlier today, human resources minister Steven Sim said employers must comply with the declaration of the additional public holiday in conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebration. Bernama reported him as saying employers could observe the additional public holiday and pay regular salaries, or instruct their employees to work and pay them according to the public holiday rates. 'Employers can also opt to give a replacement holiday on another day if their employees are required to work on that public holiday,' he said.
