Malaysian students abroad urged to embrace cultural exchange

The Sun17-07-2025
WELLINGTON: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called on Malaysian students overseas to actively participate in local communities, emphasising the importance of cultural exchange beyond academic pursuits.
Speaking at a gathering with over 250 Malaysian students and residents in New Zealand, Ahmad Zahid highlighted the value of learning from indigenous cultures, particularly the Maori community.
'Don't just learn from inside the lecture rooms, tutorials, or professors' offices. We should also introduce ourselves to the local communities and learn their cultures, especially the Maori culture here, which is rich with historical values and a spirit of resilience,' he said.
The event was attended by Malaysia's High Commissioner to New Zealand Mazita Marzuki, alongside official delegates and senior government officers.
Ahmad Zahid praised the Maori community's ability to preserve their heritage while managing economic assets through trust agencies since the 19th century.
'We need to learn from their spirit and strength in fighting for their rights and adapt that to the Malaysian context, especially in empowering the Orang Asli communities,' he added.
The deputy prime minister also commended students sponsored by agencies like JPA, MARA, GLCs, and GLICs for maintaining a positive image abroad.
He stressed that social integration and cultural awareness are crucial in shaping competitive graduates ready to contribute to Malaysia's development.
Addressing career prospects, Ahmad Zahid acknowledged that salaries in Malaysia may be lower than in countries like New Zealand but urged students in critical fields such as engineering, law, and accounting to return home. 'East or west, home is best,' he remarked.
To support the Malaysian diaspora, Ahmad Zahid announced a NZ$100,000 (RM251,000) allocation to Rumah Malaysia for National Day celebrations. - Bernama

Muar man loses nearly RM500K to investment scam

MUAR: A man here was duped into losing almost half a million ringgit in a bogus online investment scheme promising high returns within months. Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the 46-year-old victim lodged a police report on Monday (July 28) after realising he had been scammed out of RM488,740 over two months. 'The victim came across an investment advertisement on social media and clicked on a link which directed him to communicate with an unknown individual via WhatsApp. 'The victim was then instructed to download a mobile application called 'PHG Plus', allegedly for investment purposes,' he said here on Tuesday (July 29). ACP Raiz Mukhliz added that the victim, who works at a furniture factory here, was promised an attractive return of 50% within a week and up to 500% in six months. He said between May 21 and July 21, the victim made 39 transactions totalling RM488,740 into six different bank accounts provided by the suspect. 'However, when he tried to withdraw his so-called profits, which appeared to have reached over RM6mil in the app, he was told to first pay an additional RM600,000 as 'income tax'. 'It was at that point that the victim realised he had been cheated,' he said, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. ACP Raiz Mukhliz urged the public to be vigilant against online investment scams that promise unrealistic returns within a short period. 'Always verify with official sources before making any financial commitments. 'Please follow the Royal Malaysia Police Commercial Crime Investigation Department's social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok for updates on the latest scam tactics,' he added.

Malaysia will not interfere in legal process over Indonesian oil tycoon, says Anwar

IPOH: The Malaysian government will not interfere in any legal matters related to Indonesian oil tycoon Riza Chalid, who is said to be involved in a corruption case involving fuel imports. Indonesian weekly Tempo reported that Anwar had told several editors-in-chief in Jakarta on July 29 and informed them that he had met with Riza. 'Let the legal process in Indonesia take its course,' Anwar was quoted as saying. Anwar also did not comment on the whereabouts of Riza, who is believed to be in Malaysia. Acting Indonesian Immigration director-general Yuldi Yusman had on July 16 reportedly said that Riza is believed to be in Malaysia since Feb 6, having departed from Soekarno-Hatta Airport. The Jakarta Post reported that Riza was named as a suspect in a corruption case linked to state-owned oil and gas company Pertamina.

Govt to adopt integrated approach to tackle rising child sexual crimes, says Ahmad Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will implement a whole-of-government strategy to address the alarming rise in child sexual crimes, with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi revealing that such cases surged by over 50% in just four years. Citing official statistics, Ahmad Zahid said reported child sexual offences rose from 2,541 cases in 2020 to 3,892 cases in 2024, an increase of 53.2%. He revealed that the number of victims also grew from 2,561 to 3,988, marking a 55.7% jump. "This upward trend is deeply concerning. The evolution of technology and the industrial revolution have introduced more sophisticated criminal methods, including deepfake technology and digital identity theft. "To tackle this issue comprehensively and effectively, the government will adopt an integrated approach involving the Home Ministry, the police, Youth and Sports Ministry, and the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry," he said in a statement after chairing the second National Social Council (MSN) meeting for 2025 on Tuesday (July 29). He said among the initiatives planned is the Children's Protection Seminar: Addressing Cyber Threats and Sexual Crimes, which will be held in November. Ahmad Zahid stressed that MSN remains a critical platform for coordinating cross-ministerial social policy implementation in line with the Madani government's commitment to building an inclusive, resilient, and prosperous society. "To strengthen the impact of policy implementation, MSN membership has now been expanded to include strategic ministries such as the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry, the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry, the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry, the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry and the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories)," he said. The meeting also reviewed the implementation of the National Social Policy (DSN) 2030 and progress on its Action Plan 2026–2030, which Ahmad Zahid said is now in its final phase and will be presented to the Cabinet in October. "The DSN 2030 is the umbrella policy that harmonises 44 national social policies. Its action plan must be executed in a targeted and high-impact manner, with regular monitoring, impact measurement, and high accountability from all agencies," he said. He said the council also examined several social challenges, including the plight of mentally ill homeless individuals who have slipped through the cracks of mental health intervention due to the lack of dedicated facilities. "We support the Health Ministry's initiative to establish a taskforce to build psychiatric nursing care homes," Ahmad Zahid said. Another key proposal discussed was the formation of a Special Committee on National Preschool Islamic Education, aimed at streamlining issues related to registration, safety, health, curriculum strategy, and teaching personnel - a step Ahmad Zahid described as crucial in strengthening early childhood education systems. The meeting also addressed graduate skill mismatch, with Ahmad Zahid highlighting a Statistics Department's report that showed 2.06 million graduates currently working in jobs that do not match their qualifications. "To resolve this strategically, the Human Resources Ministry and TalentCorp have launched the MyMahir initiative," he said. So far, he said 66 industry-based training programmes have been approved under the Future Skills Talent Council, covering high-impact sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, data analytics, and the green economy. "These programmes offer not only high-skill training but also job guarantees, with average starting salaries ranging from RM3,000 to RM6,000 per month," Ahmad Zahid said.
