Awami League top brass reportedly held secret consultations in London, and it is being speculated that the party is planning to facilitate the return of deposed PM Sheikh Hasina by overthrowing Bangladesh's interim government led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power in August last year, following student protests that quickly morphed into an anti-regime agitation, forcing Hasina to flee the country and seek refuge in India. Shortly after Hasina's fall, an interim government headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was installed in Dhaka, and the new regime quickly turned out to be an anti-India force, as it moved closer to Pakistan and China, leading to a decline in India-Bangladesh relations.
However, the Yunus government may face a similar fate as its predecessor as top leaders of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League– the deposed ruling party of Bangladesh– are reportedly planning to overthrow the interim dispensation under which the country has descended into political, economic, and social chaos.
Awami League leaders meet in London
According to a media report, five former Awami League ministers held secret consultations at the wedding ceremony of a fellow party leader at a hotel in London, United Kingdom on Sunday night (local time).
Awami League Joint General Secretary and former Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud, Presidium Member and former Fisheries and Livestock Minister Abdur Rahman, Organising Secretary and former Shipping Minister Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury and Sylhet district Awami League President and former State Minister for Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, attended the wedding of UK Awami League General Secretary Syed Sajidur Rahman Faruq's son Faiyaz Rahman at the Hotel InterContinental in London, Prothom Alo reported.
As per reports, the Awami League top brass also held secret consultations at the event, which has stirred a political firestorm in Dhaka as it is being speculated that the deposed party is plotting to overthrow Bangladesh's interim goverment.
Will Sheikh Hasina return to Bangladesh?
Meanwhile, deposed leader Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in India, has hinted at a future return to Bangladesh, even though the current regime in Dhaka has cancelled her passport, and filed damning criminal cases against her, including kidnapping, murder, genocide, and war crimes.
In a meeting with Awami League workers and supporters last week, Hasina asserted that God saved her life and brought her to India for some good reason, and she intends to return to Bangladesh 'very soon'.
Hasina's statement has triggered speculations whether her Awami League is hatching some big plan in London to facilitate her return and oust the Yunus-led government from power. Notably, Bangladesh's interim government has suspended the National Voter ID of Sheikh Hasina and nine members of her family, making them ineligible to vote or contest polls in the South Asian country.
Dhaka has also issued a warrant against British MP Tulip Siddiq, who is a close relative of Sheikh Hasina.

Trade war: 'India's ties with US have weathered many transitions,' says MEA

NEW DELHI: Even as the India-US relationship comes under strain because of President Donald Trump's trade weaponisation, the Indian govt reposed hope in bilateral ties, with the ministry of external affairs (MEA) saying on Friday that the partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges, and that India is confident the relationship will continue to move forward. "This partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges. We remain focused on the substantive agenda that our two countries have committed to and are confident that the relationship will continue to move forward," MEA spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said. At the same time, the govt underlined the significance of the relationship with Russia calling it steady and time-tested. MEA: India and Russia have time-tested ties Trump announced 25% tariffs on imports from India this week and also threatened to impose a penalty for India's oil and defence procurement from Russia. On crude imports from Russia, govt reiterated India's position that it's guided by what is on offer in the markets, and by the prevailing global circumstances, in securing its energy needs. On defence procurements, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said sourcing of India's defence requirements is determined solely by its national security imperatives and strategic assessments. Despite repeated provocations by Trump, India has so far avoided getting into a slanging match with Americans, focusing instead on ongoing negotiations for a bilateral trade deal that it hopes will alleviate some of the President's concerns about US' lopsided trade with India. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Stylish New Mobility Scooters Available for Seniors (Prices May Surprise You) Mobility Scooter | Search Ads Search Now Undo Asked about Trump tariffs and its implications for the relationship, the official said India and the United States share a comprehensive global strategic partnership anchored in shared interests, democratic values and robust people-to-people ties. On defence cooperation, Jaiswal said India has a strong defence partnership with the US that has been strengthening over the past several years. There is potential for this partnership to grow further under the India-US COMPACT for the 21st century. In Feb this year, Trump and PM Modi launched a new initiative — the 'US-India COMPACT (Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) for the 21st Century' — to drive 'transformative change' across key pillars of cooperation. Asked about ties with Russia, the official said India's bilateral relationships with various countries stand on their own merit and should not be seen from the prism of a third country. 'India and Russia have a steady and time-tested partnership,' added the official. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . Bangladesh: Student leader arrested on extortion charge

Dhaka, Aug 1 (PTI) Bangladesh police on Friday arrested a student leader on extortion charges, nearly a week after taking into custody five of his comrades, including two prominent figures of Students against Discrimination, in the same case. The Students against Discrimination (SAD) had led last year's mass protest campaign that eventually toppled prime minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League regime on August 5. 'Our detective branch arrested Jane Alam Apu from Dhaka's Wari area. Apu is the sixth accused to be arrested in the same case of extortion," joint commissioner of police Mohammad Nasirul Islam said. On July 26, police arrested five student leaders, including SAD figures Ibrahim Hossain Munna and Abdur Razzak Riyad, sparking a nationwide uproar. Their arrest prompted the SAD to expel them immediately and dissolve all its units excepting the central committee. Munna was SAD's Dhaka city convenor while Riyad was the convenor of the platform's Private Universities Committee. According to police, the group first went to former lawmaker of now disbanded Awami League Shammi Ahmed's residence at posh Gulshan area in the capital on July 17 and demanded Taka 50 lakh from her husband Abu Zafar since his 'fascist collaborator wife' was not at the house. On that day, they extorted Taka 10 lakh from him and on July 26 they went again to the house to collect the remaining Taka 40 lakh when police appeared at the scene and arrested them responding to a call from the family. The police action came as CCTV footage showing the extortionists receiving cash in the guest room of a residence went viral on social media. The SAD had spearheaded the violent street movement leading to Hasina's ouster. Three days after she fled to India, Muhammad Yunus took over as the head of the interim government on August 8. Two of the representatives of the SAD platform are Yunus' cabinet members. The SAD had later turned into a political outfit, the National Citizen Party (NCP), in February this year. Following the incident, former SAD spokesperson Umama Fatema, who recently resigned from the platform, in a video post on social media alleged that corruption had gripped the platform's leaders and that the 'July Uprising' 'has been made a 'money-making machine'." Fatema, who was one of the key coordinators of the student-led protest last year, said she was 'used like a tissue paper or a doormat" and claimed all key decisions came from Hare Road, where the government's advisers reside.
