PWD steps up pre-monsoon arrangements,15 lakh MT silt cleared, roads resurfaced
NEW DELHI: PWD and Water Minister Parvesh Verma on Monday said that governance in the capital has entered a new era, driven by coordination between the BJP-led central, Delhi and MCD governments.
'This is the biggest reform in Delhi governance, no excuses, no delays, only delivery,' he said, addressing the press.
Citing visible improvements across the city, Verma said the end of inter-governmental conflict has enabled real-time results, particularly in the Public Works Department (PWD), Water, and Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) sectors.
Under the I&FC department, over 15 lakh metric tonnes of silt have been removed from major city drains as part of a large-scale desilting drive. Verma also said that encroachments along drains are being cleared to allow uninterrupted water flow during the monsoon. To bolster the effort, 156 new posts have been sanctioned in the department.
The PWD has introduced a new tendering model for road and drainage work, starting with areas around Delhi University. Verma said that 35 packages have been floated specifically for drain desilting, and 35% of stormwater drain work has already been completed. The target is to finish desilting by June 15. Additionally, 100 km of roads have been resurfaced, 2,500 new streetlights installed, and 90% of dark spots addressed.

Naik said the Mahapurush Adarsh Gram Yojana envisages all-round development of the villages of the illustrious persons to honour their contribution to the state. The villages will be converted into destinations for people to visit and gain inspiration, he said.

JAC demands PM Modi's assurance against Visakhapatnam Steel Plant privatisation
VISAKHAPATNAM: The Visakhapatnam District Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Workers and People's Organisations has demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Visakhapatnam on June 21 to take part in International Yoga Day, officially announce the withdrawal of the proposed privatisation of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP). They have also sought immediate reinstatement of 4,000 contract workers, who were unjustly terminated, and urged the TDP-led NDA government to lift the police restrictions imposed on the ongoing hunger strike camp at Kurmannapalem Junction. These demands were raised at a roundtable meeting of the JAC held at the CITU office on Saturday. JAC chairman M Jaggunaidu and vice-chairmen M Manmadha Rao, B Nagabhushanam and N Kanaka Rao addressed the gathering. The leaders pointed out that workers have been relentlessly protesting for over four-and-a-half years to protect the steel plant through a relay hunger strike at Kurmannapalem Junction. 'Political leaders across party lines, including the present Gajuwaka MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao, have participated in the strike in the past,' they said. However, when the Ukku Parirakshana Porata Committee attempted to rebuild the dilapidated protest camp, the coalition government sent police to prevent it, threatening to file cases against permanent and contract workers who sit in fast. Police presence continues at the site, which the JAC condemned as a violation of democratic rights. The JAC criticised the TDP-JSP-BJP coalition for acting against democratic rights after assuming power, despite having championed those rights while in opposition. They demanded that the government allow peaceful protests without obstruction.

Kedarnath chopper crash: Uttarakhand government suspends helicopter services
After seven people, including the pilot, lost their lives in a chopper crash near Kedarnath, Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that Helicopter services will remain suspended in the region for the next two days. "A control and command centre should be set up. Strict action will be taken against the culprits in this accident. Helicopter services will not run today or tomorrow. These services will remain closed until the safety of the passengers is ensured," Dhami told ANI on Sunday. The BJP leader also said that aviation companies have been directed to follow the rules of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, warning of strict action against the culprits of today's tragedy. Seven people were killed after a chopper carrying six people from Kedarnath to Guptkashi crashed near Gaurikund on Sunday early morning in Rudraprayag district. The chopper, which belonged to Aryan Aviation Aviation took off from the Kedarnath helipad at around 5.20 am but later went "missing" after authorities lost signal with it.
