Joanna Lumley admits she doesn't have 'much time left' as she opens up about losing friends

Daily Mirror29-04-2025

Amandaland and Absolutely Fabulous star Joanna Lumley has revealed that she wants to make the most of life after reflecting on her mortality ahead of turning 79
Joanna Lumley says knowing she is getting older and running out of time makes her more energetic. The 78-year-old actor and comedian thinks a lot about her mortality.
She said: 'As you near the top of the hill you suddenly think, 'Gosh, there's not all that amount of time left,' she reflects. 'All kinds of my beloved friends are beginning to leave. My time must be coming quite soon and I don't want to have wasted a minute of being on this beautiful planet.' She is so determined to live life to the full, that her work diary remains busy.

This year she has starred in the hit BBC comedy series Amandaland and in 2024 she was in the acclaimed Netflix drama Fool Me Once. Her latest ITV travel series sees her explore the 1,770-mile length of the River Danube.
Joanna also warned against fearing old age and added that she 'always knew' the good stuff would come along as she got older. She told My Weekly: "I used to panic when I was young, but as I've got older I've started literally to live day to day. With age, you work out what matters.
"I always knew that good stuff would come along when I was older. When I was 18, I longed to be 30. When I was 30, longed to be 50.
"We mustn't be led into thinking getting old is bad. Growing old is good."
Joanna has also had a message for young people. She warned that social media means teenagers won't know how to talk to each other.
She said: "My big message to the young that you need time in your head. I'm so afraid we're going to breed a generation who don't know the world and don't know how to talk."

Joanna's illustrious career has seen her star in a host of successful TV shows, from The New Avengers and Sapphire & Steel to Absolutely Fabulous, Finding Alice and Motherland.
In the 60s she was memorably one of Ken Barlow's first girlfriends in Coronation Street and on the big screen she worked alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street.
Away from the screen she is married to her conductor husband Stephen Barlow, 70. She is a devoted mum to son Jamie, 57, and she has two granddaughters, Alice, 22, and Emily, 21.

Jamie Borthwick's EastEnders job ‘at risk' over disabled slur scandal

DISGRACED EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick's job on the soap could be at risk after his disabled slur scandal. The actor - who has played Jay Brown for 19 years on the BBC soap - was suspended by bosses after he was filmed using a sickening slur while backstage at Strictly Come Dancing. 2 2 He issued a grovelling apology to The Sun on Sunday but now sources say it may not be enough to bring the matter to a close. While Jamie's suspension isn't believed to have had a drastic effect on filming schedules or re-writes, it has put a question mark in the industry over his job at the soap. A source said: 'Jamie is well thought of but Jay hasn't played a central role in the show for a while. 'The character hasn't had a major storyline recently - he's been very much a supporting character of late. 'Meanwhile Jamie has been kept busy outside of EastEnders by being given the Strictly Christmas special in 2023 and then the full series last year. 'But consquently on EastEnders he's barely been seen with about 30 appearances on screen since last summer. 'And with a new boss in Ben Wadey who only recently took the helm and with the scandal taking place so soon into his tenure feeling is that Jamie's place on the show could be at serious risk.' Jamie sent shockwaves behind the scenes at the BBC soap's Elstree-based set last weekend when The Sun On Sunday revealed a video had emerged of him on the set of the dance show last year. In it, he was seen using the term 'm********s' to describe the people of Blackpool, the seaside town where the show was being filmed for its annual special. Jamie made the shameful remark while the Strictly cast were at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom last November. Strictly's Jamie Borthwick cheated on me during the show and then used co-star to try and smooth it over, ex tells pals The footage - which was sent to a pal - shows him backstage during rehearsals alongside co-star Wynne Evans, who was recently sacked by the BBC. The pair were excited to learn they had been selected for the Strictly tour, which toured the country earlier this year. Jamie is then seen laughing, before saying: 'Blackpool by the way. Absolute m********s.' The BBC suspended him from the soap while they investigate the matter. They said in a statement: 'This language is entirely unacceptable and in no way reflects the values or standards we hold and expect at the BBC. We have robust processes in place for this.' Jamie apologised saying: 'I want to apologise sincerely and wholeheartedly for the words I used in the video showing my reaction to making it through Blackpool week on Strictly. 'I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused. 'It is no excuse, but I did not fully understand the derogatory term I used and its meaning. That is on me completely. 'Now I am aware, I am deeply embarrassed to have used the term and directed it in the way I did. It was wrong. 'When I made the video, I was excited and caught up in the moment. Again, that is no excuse. But my regrettable actions are not a true reflection of my views, or who I am. 'I enjoyed every minute of my time in the Blackpool Tower Ballroom and the town itself. The people of Blackpool have always been amazing with the Strictly crew, dancers and cast members. Strictly Curse - The Lowdown STRICTLY Come Dancing's latest series has already been hit by rumours of a BBC show 'curse' - yet what is it? A host of Strictly Come Dancing stars have been struck by the Strictly Curse during the past two decades. This is where celebrities who may or may not be attached in the outside world become more than friends with their professional partners. A total of 20 relationships are said to have been impacted so far over the show's 20 years. It has seen relationships crumble with dance floor romances and punishing rehearsal schedules to blame. This includes the partnerships of Louise and Jamie Redknapp as well as Kevin Clifton and Karen Hauer. Controversially, Judge Craig Revel Horwood once said of the curse: 'I think of it as a blessing, to be honest. One person is married, the other one had a girlfriend but my point in this entire thing is: if you come on Strictly, sometimes you are in a relationship that is not working anyway. 'There has to be something wrong in your relationship before it all goes awry.' Series one winner Brendan Cole left his fiancé, fellow Strictly professional Camilla Dallerup, during filming for the very first series in spring 2004. Brendan was said to have fallen for his celebrity partner and inaugural winner Natasha Kaplinsky, although the duo didn't confirm they were romantically involved. 'I know they will be again for this year's show and those in years to come. I am truly sorry.'

Every movie & show to be released after filming in Scotland

Over the last year or so, Scotland has become a hotbed of Hollywood activity – with huge films such as Frankenstein all expected out over the next year or so. In June, J.J. Abrams is shooting his secretive blockbuster under the name Ghostwriter in both Edinburgh and Glasgow, while crews spotted around Moray are said to be setting up for production of Christopher Nolan's 2026 movie The Odyssey. Meanwhile, reports suggest that Marvel will once again return to Scotland in August to film the fourth instalment of Tom Holland's Spider-Man film, with further productions expected around the country including Henry Cavill's Highlander reboot. That's without mentioning the slew of TV shows which have been filmed in Scotland recently. Season two of Apple TV+'s The Buccaneers returned to Scotland once again to shoot throughout the country, while Netflix's Edinburgh-set Dept. Q shot on location around the capital. Here are all of the movies and TV shows filmed in Scotland during 2024 and 2025, which are still to be released (and some to be shot). 1 . Untitled J.J. Abrams film (AKA Ghostwriter) Filming for Hollywood director J.J. Abrams' new film has been taking place across Scotland. Not much is currently known about the secretive project - being filmed under the name of Ghostwriter - aside from the cast which includes Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega, Emma Mackey and Samuel L Jackson. Filming began in Edinburgh in early June with production expected to continue in Glasgow. | Lisa Ferguson Photo Sales 2 . The Odyssey Having been closed to the public since May, Findlater Castle in Moray is set to appear in Christopher Nolan's upcoming adaptation of Greek epic, The Odyssey. With an all star cast led by Matt Damon, the historic ruin is expected to remain closed to the public until mid-July. | AFP via Getty Images Photo Sales 3 . Frankenstein Filming for Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein took place across Scotland last year, with locations including Edinburgh and Aberdeenshire. Set for release in November 2025, the adaptation stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the Monster. | Ken Woroner / Netflix Photo Sales 4 . Spider-Man: Brand New Day (AKA Blue Oasis) Having previously spent time filming in Scotland, Marvel look set to return to the country to film the fourth instalment of Tom Holland's Spider-Man movies in August. Notices for the production of Blue Oasis - the reported working name for Spider-Man: Brand New Day - have started to appear in Glasgow with filming expected to take place around the city centre, which will presumably fill in for New York City. The new film is expected to be released in 2026. | Getty Images Photo Sales
