Man Utd told they made exactly the same transfer mistake as Arsenal this summer

Daily Mirror10 hours ago
Manchester United and Arsenal were both linked with Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins this summer, but opted to sign Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres respectively instead
Manchester United have been told their decision to sign Benjamin Sesko is a "mistake" and that they should have bought Ollie Watkins instead. United have spent big on attacking reinforcements this summer, forking out almost £200million for Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.

However, former Red Devils star Nicky Butt, who won six Premier League titles at Old Trafford, believes Watkins would have been a better option due to his experience. Watkins has spent five season in the Premier League with Aston Villa and hit double figures in all of them.

"I know Cunha has done really well over the last couple of seasons but I would really like an experienced striker," Butt told BetMGM. "I hope I'm wrong but I really hope they aren't making the same mistakes with Sesko as they did with Rasmus [Hojlund].

"A young player coming in with no Premier League experience, it just feels like history repeating itself. Honestly, for what it would have cost, I would have gone and brought in someone like Ollie Watkins, someone to help and pull the young strikers out of a bad patch.
"When young players are just coming into the club, when the onus is on them to score goals, if they're having a few bad games they have to have the safety net of being pulled out of the firing line. Ollie Watkins, or someone like that, would be who I would have been looking to bring in."
Arsenal legend Tony Adams expressed a similar sentiment, claiming the Gunners should have signed Watkins instead of Viktor Gyokeres. When asked about Gyokeres during a Q & A for Indo Sport, Adams said: "I don't know yet.
"He's not tried and tested. I would have liked to have seen them get Ollie Watkins to be honest with you. He's a Gooner, he might have given us a year and we might have won the title."
Adams also expressed concerns about Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and club captain Martin Odegaard. When asked for his thoughts on Arteta, Adams responded: "Ahhhh… [audience laughs]… What?! Was there too much of a long pause there?
"I think he's got a really big call to make this year and, for me, he hasn't done it and the call is to make Declan Rice captain. Declan is my kind of captain and it might free up [Martin] Odegaard up to play with a bit more freedom because he had a very average season last year."

"But I think sometimes when you've got the main man and the captain of the club… Terry Venables did it, he took it off David Platt and he put me as captain and Glenn Hoddle took me out and put Alan Shearer, which was a silly decision!
"But every now and again, as a manager, you have to put someone that reflects you, reflects the football club, someone who thinks can actually take you to the next level. I think Rice is an Arsenal leader, I think he is.
"He's good in the dressing room, around the training camp. He's got standards, he's got principles and I can see the man and he's a proper player, a proper captain. I would have done it, but Arteta hasn't done it so I'm being critical of Arteta at the moment. Big managers go, 'Right actually, you're my man now!'"

Barcelona finally resolve Marcus Rashford problem with last-minute decision

Barcelona have been struggling to secure Marcus Rashford's La Liga registration following his loan move from Manchester United but the situation now appears to have been resolved Barcelona have finally managed to secure Marcus Rashford 's registration following Hansi Flick 's complaints. The Manchester United star joined the Catalan giants on a season-long loan earlier this summer. ‌ Despite the move being approved, Barcelona were unable to register Rashford for the forthcoming La Liga season. And should that not have been approved, then the forward could have potentially been sidelined until January. ‌ It appears however that Barcelona have managed to find a solution to the issue. Rashford's profile appeared on the La Liga website appeared for the first time alongside that of Joan Garcia - who was also facing registration problems following his summer switch. ‌ Gerard Martin and Wojciech Szczesny remained absent, potentially suggesting that Barcelona were attempting to stagger the registrations. Barcelona have needed help from goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to alleviate their financial difficulties. They have agreed that the German serves a temporary medical leave agreement that frees up around 80 percent of his wages. The news that both Rashford and Garcia are available for this weekend's season opener vs Mallorca will be welcome news for boss Hansi Flick, who made his displeasure at the ongoing situation known. 'For me, the situation, you can imagine I'm not happy about that. But I know the situation and I believe in the club,' the German said on Friday. 'We have to wait till tomorrow. It was the same situation last season. We will focus on what we can change and what is in our hands. The other things, I believe in the club.' Elsewhere, Rashford has already spoken out on his first few weeks with Barcelona and claimed that he has found it easy to adapt. Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, he said: 'There are good people who are like a bridge. ‌ 'Frenkie [de Jong] speaks really good English, Jules [Kounde] speaks very good English, but they also have good Spanish because they've been here a few years. 'But on the pitch, honestly it's easier than what I thought it would be. Also football overall, I know a lot of people say it, but it's a language in itself and it's easy to communicate through the general vibe on the pitch.' Following their season opener against Mallorca, Barcelona are back in action next weekend as they travel to Levante. Barcelona's first home game of the season will not take place until after the international break due to the ongoing renovation of the Nou Camp. Virgil van Dijk sends message to Liverpool owners over Marc Guehi transfer

Virgil van Dijk admitted that further defensive reinforcements would 'accelerate' Liverpool's improvement as the club considers a move for Marc Guehi. Liverpool secured a dramatic 4-2 victory over Bournemouth in their opening Premier League fixture after late goals from Federico Chiesa and Mohamaed Salah. Arne Slot's side had taken a two-goal lead before Antoine Semenyo's brace threatened to deny the defending champions an opening-day win at Anfield. The Reds have not been at their best defensively so far this season, also conceding twice en route to a penalty shootout defeat in the Community Shield final last weekend. The singing of 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni provides some cover at centre-back, but Liverpool have also held talks with Palace captain Guehi who is out of contract at the end of the season. And Van Dijk hinted that another body through the door would certainly help Liverpool become sturdier at the back. 'You can say you have to accelerate it (improvement) but that is down to the market,' the Dutchman said post-match. 'We have to focus on what's here and now. I think it (defensively) was much more improved than the last game but there is still work to do 'The manager already said we are playing with a right-back (Jeremie Frimpong) who came from the Bundesliga, is 24 years old and is trying to get used to how we defend, we play with Milos (Kerkez) who is a very young full-back, very eager and full of energy, who is trying to get used to the way we play. 'It needs time, that's absolutely normal, but we also played without our six, Ryan Gravenberch, who missed out (with suspension). 'We have to keep working, that's the main thing, trying to keep clean sheets. We conceded two goals in a transition moment where we have to do better. That's what we have to work on.' Club-to-club talks are expected to resume between Liverpool and Palace next week over a potential deal for Guehi, with some reports suggesting personal terms have already been agreed with the player. More Trending The south Londoners were hoping to raise around £40m by the sale of Guehi but Liverpool have indicated they want to pay £30m, with an additional £5m in add-ons. Speaking before Liverpool's opening league fixture, however, Slot was coy about any deal for the England international. 'He's not our player. Unfortunately, he was the captain of the team who we lost to last Sunday,' Slot said. 'If you want to have any talks about him you should go to Palace and [manager Oliver] Glasner and ask him about it.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
