Kelsey Mitchell joins Caitlin Clark in rare Indiana Fever feat

Yahoo6 days ago
After the Indiana Fever's 93-78 Sunday win vs. the Chicago Sky, forward Kelsey Mitchell joins Caitlin Clark in a rare franchise single-game feat, according to the WNBA.
In the Fever's third victory over the Sky in as many tries and second from the 20,000-seat United Center this season, Mitchell led the team in scoring with a season-high 35 points on 12-for-19 from the floor, 7-for-10 from 3-point territory, and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line to go along with six assists, three steals, and two rebounds.
With the impressive performance, Mitchell now joins Clark as only the second player in Indiana Fever franchise history to score 35-plus points, while also recording five-plus assists and five-plus 3-pointers made in a single game.
Clark became the first to accomplish this rare statistical feat on Sept. 15, 2024, when the former Hawkeye erupted for a 35-point performance against the Dallas Wings, where she also recorded eight assists and connected on six 3-pointers. That game was also when Clark broke the WNBA's rookie scoring record, once held by Seimone Augustus.
Mitchell's scoring pace on Sunday also set a franchise record as she became the first player to score 35 or more points in under 30 minutes, which she accomplished just under the wire at 29:51.
While the Indiana star guard remains out indefinitely as she attempts to make a full recovery from her latest injury setback, having the scoring abilities of Mitchell at the forefront of the Fever's attack has certainly paid dividends lately.
Indiana will look to continue their second-half push towards the playoffs when the Fever (14-12) return home to Gainbridge Fieldhouse for a matchup vs. former teammate DeWanna Bonner and the Phoenix Mercury (16-9) on Wednesday, July 30.
The game from Indianapolis has a scheduled start for 6 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN3.

Sex toy-throwing fan arrested for disrupting WNBA game between Valkyries, Dream

The fan who threw a green sex toy onto the court during a WNBA game between the Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream on Tuesday has been arrested, according to a league spokesperson. That person has not been identified publicly. 'The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans,' the spokesperson said. 'In line with WNBA Arena Security Standards, any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities.' Tuesday's incident occurred during the fourth quarter of the game in Atlanta, with less than a minute left on the clock. Television cameras briefly zoomed in on the sex toy before cutting away to another shot. Some WNBA players have laughed about the incident while also acknowledging it as a potential safety hazard. 'I mean, first of all, it was super dangerous. And then when we found out what it was, I guess we just started laughing,' Valkyries forward Cecilia Zandalasini said while chuckling during a postgame news conference. 'I've never seen anything like that. I'm just glad we worked through that situation. We stayed locked in, we stayed concentrated.' Other players, including the Indiana Fever's Sophie Cunningham and New York Liberty's Isabelle Harrison, criticized the move as a disrespectful security failure. Fans on social media widely shared clips and pictures of the situation, and an apparent copycat threw a second green sex toy onto the court Friday during another Valkyries road game against the Chicago Sky. 'It's super disrespectful,' the Sky's Elizabeth Williams said after the game, which the Valkyries won 73-66. 'I don't really get the point of it. It's really immature. Whoever is doing it needs to grow up.' Atlanta police have not commented on the reported arrest. This article originally appeared in The Athletic.
