CHICAGO: South Korea star Son Heung-min made his Major League Soccer debut for Los Angeles FC Saturday, providing a burst of energy as a second-half substitute in a 2-2 draw with the Fire in Chicago. Son was brought down for a penalty in the 77th minute that Denis Bouanga converted to clinch a draw in the 81st minute—VAR confirming the spot-kick after the referee had allowed play to continue.
'It was a great pass. Obviously it was definitely contact and it was definitely a penalty, I have no doubt about it,' said Son, who was sent sprawling by Carlos Teran after racing on to a through ball with the goal in his sights. 'A bit disappointed not getting three points, but I think everybody put in a lot of effort. (I'm) happy I made my debut and I hope the goals come soon.' The former Tottenham captain also had a string of shots on goal, including one blocked in second-half injury time. Son signed with LAFC on Wednesday for a reported MLS record $26 after a decade with Premier League club Spurs, where he became a household name.
The South Korea captain had announced the previous Saturday in his homeland that he would be leaving the north London club and departed as Tottenham's fifth-highest goalscorer of all time with 173 goals in 454 appearances. Son will not get a chance to play in front of home fans in Los Angeles until August 31, when Western Conference leaders San Diego will be the visitors. But around the Fire's SeatGeek Stadium there were a lot of fans wearing his jerseys, waving South Korean flags and holding up signs welcoming Son to MLS.
Cheers greeted his entry in place of David Martinez in the 61st minute with the teams level at 1-1. Jonathan Bamba put Chicago 2-1 ahead in the 70th minute and were pressing again when Brian Gutierrez's shot bounced off the post and LAFC seized the rebound. Nathan Ordaz played the ball forward for Son to race away. He had a first MLS goal in his sights when he was brought down. The penalty allowed LAFC to level for a second time. Carlos Teran had opened the scoring for the Fire in the 11th minute with a header from a corner. Eight minutes later Ryan Hollingshead nodded in to make it 1-1.
Son had said at his introductory press conference—attended by luminaries including Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass—that he felt fighting fit and wanted to get on the pitch 'as soon as possible.' He will have his next chance when LAFC, who moved up a spot to fifth in the Western Conference, visit the New England Revolution next Saturday. 'It was a decent 30 minutes in my legs, so, yeah, getting ready for next week,' Son said. 'So we'll see how I progress with the training sessions and with the players and we'll see (if) next week I can start the game and make a big impact.' — AFP

Salah wins record third PFA Player of the Year award

LONDON, Aug 20, (Xinhua): Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah has become the first player to win the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Men's Player of the Year award for the third time. Salah, who also won the award in 2018 and 2022, topped a six-player shortlist that included Liverpool teammate Alexis Mac Allister, Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes, Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, Chelsea's Cole Palmer, and Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice. The honor marks a historic milestone for the 33-year-old following his instrumental role in Liverpool's Premier League title win last season. Salah finished the 2024-25 campaign as the league's top scorer with 29 goals, along with 18 assists. Salah's outstanding season also saw him win the Premier League Player of the Season award and be voted the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year. Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers was named Young Player of the Year, with former England manager Gareth Southgate receiving the 2025 PFA Merit Award. Arsenal midfielder Mariona Caldentey has been named Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Women's Player of the Year, while her new teammate Olivia Smith claimed the Young Player of the Year award. Caldentey, 29, enjoyed a remarkable debut campaign in north London after arriving from Barcelona, scoring 19 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions. That included nine goals and five assists in the Women's Super League, where she was also named Player of the Year by fans in May. Her influence helped Arsenal finish second in the WSL behind Chelsea and lift the UEFA Women's Champions League title, with a 1-0 victory over former club Barcelona in the final. The shortlist also featured Arsenal's Alessia Russo, Manchester City duo Mary Fowler and Yui Hasegawa, Chelsea's Erin Cuthbert and Manchester United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce. Meanwhile, United States head coach Emma Hayes received the PFA Merit Award for her contributions to the women's game during a trophy-laden spell with Chelsea.

Leeds beat Everton for perfect start to Premier League return

Leeds beat Everton for perfect start to Premier League return Home side were dominant in the opening half with 12 shots on goal LEEDS: Lukas Nmecha's controversial late penalty gave Leeds lift-off on their return to the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Everton at a jubilant Elland Road on Monday. The match appeared to be meandering towards a stalemate until James Tarkowski was harshly adjudged to have handled Anton Stach's driven shot. Nmecha had only been on the field for six minutes of his Leeds debut but confidently fired past Jordan Pickford in the 84th minute. 'It's not a penalty,' said Tarkowski. 'I was pretty convinced it was going to get overturned (by VAR). 'A bizarre moment and it cost us the point in the end.' Everton handed a debut to Manchester City loanee Jack Grealish in the second half, but the Toffees were left to rue not posing anything of an attacking threat in the opening 45 minutes. Leeds are aiming to avoid the trend of the past two seasons when all three promoted clubs have been relegated. Daniel Farke has also struggled previously with the step up to the English top-flight during two attempts as Norwich manager. But after Sunderland beat West Ham 3-0 on Saturday, two of the three promoted sides have won on the opening weekend for only the third time in the Premier League era. Farke's men stormed to promotion by winning the Championship title with 100 points last season and Leeds started in confident fashion. The home side were dominant in the opening half with 12 shots on goal but only once made Pickford work when the England goalkeeper blocked from Joel Piroe. Grealish's introduction coincided with Everton's best spell of the game. Lucas Perri, one of Leeds' eight summer signings, made an impressive save at his near post to turn behind Carlos Alcaraz's powerful strike before Jake O'Brien headed the resulting corner over. Just as Leeds looked like they might have to hold on for a point, they were gifted the chance for a perfect start with all three. There was little Tarkowski could do as his left arm was down by his side as it blocked Stach's effort. Nmecha stayed calm amid the furore as the German international found the bottom corner. 'For a newly-promoted side it (Elland Road) has to become a fortress,' said Farke. 'It's great to see the joy and the pride in their eyes. It's great to give the supporters, who are so emotional and care so much about their club, something to cheer.' Tarkowski had Everton's only chance to make amends with an equaliser but he headed over. – AFP
