Trucks carrying hazardous material to be diverted through I-70 after Colorado mudslide; traffic delays expected
Due to the closure, CDOT crews will be escorting trucks carrying hazardous materials through the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels, which they're typically prohibited from driving through.
During those trips, other traffic will be held at the entrance of each side of the tunnels, which are on I-70 on the western side of Clear Creek County, about 60 miles west of Denver.
Sunday's landslide crossed the highway at mile marker 226, about three miles above U.S. 6's interchange with Interstate 70 near the Loveland Ski Area and one mile below the summit of Loveland Pass.
The move is common when U.S. 6 has to close, but it will cause delays in regular traffic as the tunnels are traversed by vehicles carrying hazardous material, which can include oil or gas, specialized batteries, commercial or military explosives, various biological or chemical materials, and more. Those materials are regulated by both state and federal transportation officials.
The mudslide, which was reported on Sunday and is approximately 15 to 20 feet in depth, has fully closed Highway 6 to traffic and there's no estimated time of reopening. Hikers and cyclists are also being asked to avoid the area until crews clear the mud and silt and determine the area is safe. No one was injured in the slide, CDOT said.
"The area is still actively moving so we can't safely begin cleanup efforts yet," CDOT spokesperson Austyn Dineen told CBS Colorado.

CDOT says a similar slide occurred in the area in 2003 but they have no record of any similar activity in the area in the 22 years since then.
Loveland Pass, where the slide occurred, crests the Continental Divide just shy of 12,000 feet in elevation.

On Tuesday, the website revealed its list of the most fun states in America. Importantly, it explained that we all define "fun" differently, so it measured all 50 states across two key categories, "entertainment & recreation" and "nightlife," for its rankings. It evaluated those categories using 26 relevant metrics, including the number of attractions, the variety of arts, entertainment, and recreation establishments, average weather, the number of restaurants per capita, amusement parks per capita, and the average beer and wine price. It also looked into the nightlife options per capita and even the last call time for each state. The metrics were graded on a 100-point scale, and it gave each state a weighted average. After looking at all these critically fun metrics, it named California the most fun state in the nation. "California is the most fun state in 2025, with an especially large number of restaurants, amusement parks, movie theaters, and fitness centers per capita. It also boasts the second-most attractions per capita overall," the team noted in its findings. "For those who enjoy nightlife, the Golden State has a very high number of performing-arts establishments and music festivals per capita, along with the ninth-best access to bars. And even though California is one of the most expensive states for beer, it's the least expensive for wine—likely due to the abundance produced locally." As for outdoor recreation, California certainly reigns supreme with the most scenic byways per capita and the sixth-longest ones in the country. The report also found the state has the best beach access in the U.S. and the fourth-best weather in the nation. Coming in a close second is the state of Florida, as it's home to the highest number of restaurants, musicals, and, of course, amusement parks. "But even if those particular activities aren't of interest to you, Florida has the fourth-most attractions per capita, and the seventh-best variety of arts, entertainment, and recreation establishments," WalletHub added. Florida is also a fantastic spot for those looking to get out onto the water, as it has the most marinas per capita and the second-most miles of shoreline. Rounding out the top three is the home of Sin City, Nevada, thanks naturally to its high number of nightlife outlets. "It has the most nightlife activities per capita, including a very high number of music festivals and casinos per capita," WalletHub wrote about Nevada. "For those who like to drink, bars are allowed to stay open 24/7 in Nevada, and the state has the fifth-lowest average beer price and second-lowest average wine price." However, WalletHub added that Nevada isn't just about the party. "The Silver State also spends more money per capita on parks and recreation than any other state except eight states, and it has the ninth-most acres of national parks. It has the second-best weather in the U.S., too." And, as Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst, shared, you don't have to only have fun by visiting these states. You could always consider a permanent move there, too. "Living in one of the most fun states can boost your mental, physical, and emotional health by giving you a wide range of activities to choose from, both indoor and outdoor," Lupo said. These states help residents stay active and socialize, and they're also ideal for travelers who want to make the most out of the limited amount of time that they have to explore." Saline residents asked to conserve water for essential use due to well repairs
The City of Saline in Washtenaw County, Michigan, is urging for an immediate pause of "non-essential water use" such as lawn watering as critical repairs are taking place on one of its aquifer wells. The notice was issued Monday, and city officials say residents may notice "harder than normal" water while the repairs take place. "At this moment, we do not have an accurate timeline of how long the repairs may take. We will have a better idea of this timeline at the end of the week," the report said. The repairs are taking place on Well Number 5, which is the main source of water from the city aquifer. While there is no need to boil water due to the repair work, city officials ask that water use be limited to essential indoor use such as drinking, cooking, cleaning and sanitation. Refrain from irrigation, lawn watering, car washing and filling pools. "We know this is an inconvenience, and we sincerely appreciate the understanding and cooperation of our residents. By working together, we can ensure every household and business has reliable access to water while we finish this vital repair," Acting City Manager Elle Cole said in the announcement. Updates will be posted on the city's website.
