I ditch my boyfriend to travel solo - here's why every woman should do the same
Tam Kaur, a 24-year-old author, podcaster and social media personality with more than 3 million followers, says solo travel has been life-changing - and believes women in relationships shouldn't feel guilty for prioritising their independence.
Speaking on why prefers to travel alone, she said: 'Before I met my boyfriend, I made a promise to myself that I would still prioritise me, and solo-travel is what that looks like.
'So many women leave this behind when they get partners because we're expected to holiday with them, but that's just not necessary in my eyes.'
Kaur, who lives in London, began her solo travel journey in late 2023 with a trip to Amsterdam.
Having documented her first ever flight alone in a video posted to her YouTube channel, she recalled: 'I was terrified. I was so used to my boyfriend leading me through the airport, but solo travel was on my bucket list, so I did it anyway.'
Kaur added: 'It changed everything for me. It helped me discover my love of solo travel.'
Since then, she has visited major cities across the globe, including Paris, Cyprus and New York, entirely on her own - experiences she said have helped her build a deep sense of confidence.
Kaur explained: 'You learn to be okay being alone with your thoughts. You learn how to book your own table, ask strangers for photos and talk to people you wouldn't otherwise meet. It's a huge confidence builder in the most unexpected ways.'
Despite the excitement, freedom and fulfillment around solo travel, Kaur is quick to share the more difficult moments, too - such as dining in a restaurant alone and being approached unexpectedly by strangers.
She said: 'Confidence isn't something I was born with. I built it, trip by trip, flight by flight, and it's still a work in progress.
'Originally I felt deeply uncomfortable about taking a flight on my own, staying in a hotel alone, traveling all alone in a foreign place where people speak a different language.
'It's scary, but I've managed to do it all multiple times and it wasn't half as scary as I thought it would be.'
The YouTube content creator's advice to other women curious about travelling solo is to 'start small.'
She suggested: 'Take yourself on a solo date in your hometown first, then build up to a staycation, and eventually travel abroad.'
Kaur's message has since made a huge positive impact on her social media audience, with thousands of women commenting on her travel vlogs that they have been inspired to take their own trips.
One person wrote, 'This video has literally motivated me to book the solo trip I've been planning for years now,' while another added, 'On my bucket list is to do a solo trip and this motivated me even more to do so.'
Kaur added: 'Whether you're single, taken, or somewhere in between, every woman deserves to feel like she's enough on her own and a solo trip is a beautiful reminder of that.
Alongside travel, Kaur creates content focused on solo dates, 'mindset makeovers,' and productivity hacks. She was also named on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in the Media & Marketing category for 2025.

However, Molly has now once again jetted off on her seventh holiday of the year, this time to the luxury 5-star Regnum The Crown hotel, which has been 'carefully curated to deliver a true family holiday without compromise.' The TV personality has shared snaps from her current getaway on Instagram, as the family enjoyed the hotel's Aqualantis, the newly unveiled water park. Bikini-clad Molly was seen beaming as Bambi, two, sat on her lap while going down a small water slide, at the Aqualantis which also includes a number of water slides, lazy rivers and an immersive themed zones for hours of entertainment for every age. Later that month, Molly-Mae was whisked back to the Cotswolds for a 'surprise staycation'. This time, she and Tommy stayed at the lavish £700-a-night hotel Estelle Manor which has a swimming pool, four restaurants, spa and farm on site. After a day shopping with friends and staying at the luxury Corinthia hotel in London, she attended Wimbledon as a guest of Evian water. On Sunday, she gave a tearful defence of her comments in a separate video. Drizzly weather doesn't have to mean staying indoors at home all day with the kids over the summer holidays. 1 Plenty of indoor attractions and venues offer discounted tickets to households on benefits including Universal Credit. We've rounded up some of the best on offer across the UK so you can keep the little ones occupied on a budget. London Transport Museum If you're on Universal Credit, Pension Credit or a host of other benefits, you can get unlimited access to the London Transport Museum for a year for just £1 instead of £25 full price. The full list of qualifying benefits is: Universal Credit Pension Credit Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) You will need to provide proof of receipt of one of the above benefits to get the annual pass. Coral Reef Waterworld Coral Reef Waterworld in Bracknell offers concessionary tickets to those on certain benefits like Universal Credit. Adult tickets usually costing £18.60 are worth £13.20 if you're on Universal Credit or PIP, for example - a more than £5 discount. The discounted tickets aren't available to those on JSA or ESA. National Theatre of Scotland Theatre lovers can sign up to Theatre for a Fiver to get £5 ticket deals for National Theatre of Scotland productions across Scotland. 'Bashed' Brighton Main Line bridge gets vehicle collision protection
Collision protection beams are being installed on a rail bridge on the Brighton Main Line, says Network Brighton Road bridge in Coulsdon South, which carries trains that run on the Brighton Main Line between London and the south coast via Gatwick Airport, has been struck "multiple times" by vehicles causing disruption to steel beams and support frames have been designed to absorb vehicle impacts and protect the McCauliffe, Network Rail's Sussex route director, said: "These works at Brighton Road will help reduce delays and improve the reliability of services for thousands of passengers each day." 'Vital infrastructure' To allow works to take place, Network Rail warned there would be disruption on Brighton Road and access to the station would be restricted at certain road closures will be operation every Monday to Friday, from 21:00 BST to 05:30, from 8 September to 17 October.A full weekend closure of part of the Brighton Road will take place on 18 and 19 access the station during the night-time closures, passengers can make a left turn before the closure 18 and 19 October, station access will be via the south side of the station car park will also have reduced capacity during the McCauliffe added: "Where strikes continue to happen, we also install protection beams like these to shield vital infrastructure."Thank you to the local community and car park users for their understanding while we carry out these important upgrades."
