Iran Considers Closure of Strait of Hormuz

Israa Farhan Iran may move to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz following preliminary approval by its parliament, though final authorization is still pending from the country's Supreme National Security Council, according to Iranian state media. The decision, if implemented, would mark a significant escalation in regional tensions, particularly after the recent US airstrike targeting Iranian nuclear facilities. While Iran's parliament has reportedly agreed in principle to the closure, official confirmation from top national security authorities has yet to be issued. State-run Press TV reported on Sunday that the move to shut the strait remains contingent upon a final green light from the Supreme National Security Council. The announcement follows rising regional instability and growing speculation about Iran's possible retaliation. Senior Iranian lawmaker and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Esmail Kowsari stated that closing the strait remains a viable option under active consideration. According to comments carried by the Young Journalists Club, he confirmed that the decision will be made if necessary, with all strategic responses still on the table. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, through which approximately 20 percent of global oil and gas exports transit. Located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, the narrow passage is vital for the export of hydrocarbons from key producers such as Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, the UAE, and Iran itself. Any disruption to this vital corridor would pose serious risks to international energy markets and could trigger broader geopolitical conflict. Historically, the strait has been a flashpoint during periods of tension between Iran and the United States and its allies. The renewed debate over the strait's status emerged just hours after the US carried out airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear sites early Sunday morning. The strikes prompted strong condemnation from Tehran and warnings of serious strategic consequences. Iran has previously threatened to block the strait in response to sanctions or military aggression, though it has never followed through on the threat. However, analysts warn that a full closure would likely provoke an immediate and far-reaching military and economic crisis in the Gulf region and beyond. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News 3 Killed in Shooting Attack in Thailand

Israel says targeted ‘dozens' of military targets in Iran as tensions escalate amid US strikes

FILE - An Israeli air force F-15I Ra'am taxis down the runway during Blue Flag 2019 at Uvda Air Base, Israel, November 4, 2019 - CC/Defense Visual Information Distribution Service CAIRO – 22 June 2025: The Israeli army announced targeting 'dozens of military targets' across Iran using around 30 fighter jets carrying more than 60 munitions. The strikes come after the US announced on Sunday 'obliterating' key Iranian nuclear facilities, joining a fierce war between Israel and Iran that started on 13 June and led to fatalities in both countries. As part of today's strikes, the Israeli army claimed that it killed Iranian Armed Forces soldiers while allegedly loading missile launchers. Moreover, they said they targeted a missile storage facility in Yazd area alongside missile launchers in Esfahan, Bushehr and Ahvaz and other military sites. The Israeli army vowed to continue strikes 'in any area' within Iranian territory to eliminate threats posed to Israel. Meanwhile, at least 86 Israelis have been injured by Iranian missile strikes on various areas in Israel earlier on Sunday, according to Israeli reports. The Times of Israel reported a ballistic missile strike on the northern Israeli city of Haifa although no sirens sounded. The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) announced conducting the 20th wave of attacks on Israel since Tel Aviv announced hitting Iranian nuclear sites and assassinating top military officials and senior scientists over a week ago. In a statement reported by the Iranian semi-official news agency Tasnim, the IRGC said it launched 40 ballistic missiles on Israel in their latest attack within the Operation True Promise III. The IRGC announced targeting Israel with multiwarhead Kheibarshekan ballistic missiles for the first time. They noted that modern and surprising tactics were employed to increase the missiles' accuracy and effectiveness. Among the targets of Sunday's missile attack, the IRGC says, were Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv, the Israeli biological research center, and replacement command-and-control centers. The IRGC stated on Sunday that the Iranian Armed Forces have not yet unleashed the capacities of their main sections. Attacks between both countries intensified on Sunday as US President Donald Trump announced today a 'very successful' attack on Iran's nuclear sites of Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan, claiming that key enrichment facilities there were 'totally and completely obliterated.' .@VP: "We destroyed the Iranian nuclear program ... and we did it without endangering the lives of American pilots. That's an incredible thing." — Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) June 22, 2025 Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine revealed in a briefing at the Pentagon that the strike on Iran's nuclear facilities included seven B-2 Spirit bombers, saying it was the 'largest B-2 operational strike in US history.' While Tehran says it reserves all options to defend Iranian sovereignty, interest, and people, Trump warned Iran that any retaliation 'will be met with force far greater than what was witnessed tonight.' Tel Aviv initiated the war with Iran when it bombed nuclear and military sites in Iran and assassinated key military officials and senior nuclear scientists on June 13. Tehran has accused the US, which reportedly helped Israel intercept missiles fired from Iran, of supporting Israeli military strikes on nuclear sites. Today, Tehran accused the US of 'betraying diplomacy' and launching a 'dangerous war' against Iran, saying the attack exposes 'Washington's criminal complicity with the Zionist regime in orchestrating and waging a war against Iran.'

Egypt FM tackles catastrophic conditions in Gaza, Israel-Iran military conflict with OIC ministers - Foreign Affairs

Egypt's Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a series of high-level bilateral meetings on Sunday in Istanbul on the sidelines of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers summit. Talks focused on urgent regional challenges, including the intensifying Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, the protracted Yemeni crisis, Red Sea security, and the escalating military confrontation between Israel and Iran, according to statements from Egypt's foreign ministry. In a meeting with his Yemeni counterpart, Shaye Al-Zindani, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's support for Yemen's internationally recognized government and emphasized the urgent need to resume intra-Yemeni dialogue to achieve a comprehensive political settlement. He said such a resolution must be acceptable to all Yemeni factions, preserve national unity and legitimate institutions, and end the ongoing humanitarian crisis. He also underlined the connection between Yemen's stability and broader regional security. The ministers also discussed maritime security in the Red Sea—a key strategic concern for Egypt, given its direct bearing on national security. Abdelatty briefed Al-Zindani on Egypt's ongoing efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza amid worsening humanitarian conditions. The rising military escalation between Israel and Iran was also addressed, with Abdelatty warning against a slide into regional chaos and calling for de-escalation through diplomatic channels. Later in the day, Abdelatty held talks with Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Muhammad Ishaq Dar. Both officials voiced alarm over the growing Israel-Iran conflict, warning that continued escalation would deepen regional instability. Abdelatty reiterated the urgent need to halt military operations and pursue political and diplomatic avenues to prevent further violence. Earlier Sunday, the Egyptian minister met separately with his Algerian and Bangladeshi counterparts, Ahmed Attaf and Tawhid Hussein. Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's commitment to securing a Gaza ceasefire, describing it as critical to de-escalation and restoring humanitarian aid access to the besieged territory. The meetings also examined the broader implications of the Israel-Iran standoff for regional security. Abdelatty stressed that political and diplomatic solutions remain the only viable path to avoid a broader conflagration in the Middle East. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
