With the Goods and Services Tax (GST) completing eight years, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday claimed that it is a "brutal tool of corporate cronyism" and asserted that a reformed GST must be "people-first, business-friendly, and truly federal in spirit".The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha said India deserves a tax system that works for all, not just the privileged few, so that every Indian, from the small shopkeeper to the farmer, can be a stakeholder in the nation's progress."Eight years on, the Modi government 's GST is not a tax reform - it's a brutal tool of economic injustice and corporate cronyism. It was designed to punish the poor, crush MSMEs, undermine states, and benefit a few billionaire friends of the prime minister," he said in a post on X."A 'Good and Simple Tax' was promised. Instead, India got a compliance nightmare and a five-slab tax regime that has been amended over 900 times. Even caramel popcorn and cream buns are caught in its web of confusion," Gandhi said. The bureaucratic maze favours big corporates who can navigate its loopholes with armies of accountants, while small shopkeepers, MSMEs, and ordinary traders drown in red tape, he claimed and added that the GST portal remains a source of daily harassment."MSMEs - India's largest job creators have suffered the most. Over 18 lakh enterprises have shut down since the rollout of GST eight years ago. Citizens now pay GST on everything from tea to health insurance, while corporates enjoy over ₹1 lakh crore in tax breaks annually," Gandhi said. Petrol and diesel have been deliberately kept outside the GST framework, hurting farmers, transporters, and ordinary people, he said."GST dues are also weaponised to punish non-BJP ruled states - clear proof of the Modi government's anti-federal agenda," Gandhi alleged. He said the GST was a visionary idea by the UPA, meant to unify India's markets and simplify taxation."But its promise has been betrayed by poor implementation, political bias, and bureaucratic overreach. A reformed GST must be people-first, business-friendly, and truly federal in spirit," Gandhi said.

GST Day celebrated in the city
Sridharan Rangarajan, Managing Director of Carborandum Universal Limited (CUMI) said the country having a federal structure, the Goods and Service Tax (GST) regime has been able to achieve 'one nation, one tax' promise which even the U.S. has not been able to achieve as also the digitisation in the form of e-invoicing of tax receipts which has become a role model similar to China. Mr. Rangarajan was participating in the GST Day 2025 celebration organised by Central GST Tamilnadu and Puducherry zone in the city on Tuesday. However Mr. Rangarajan citing the country having overcome the implementation stage of the GST, a short list of tax rates with short list of exemptions like Australia would foster easier compliance and enhance ease of doing business. At present the country has four main tax slabs which adds to the complexity of the tax regime as also the need for bringing under GST both the oil and electricity sectors. He also wanted the Central government to go for strategic reform in GST to over one the operational challenges in the age of digital disruptions and new age business models along with operationalising the tribunals. Ram Niwas, Principal Chief Commissioner of CGST of Tamilnadu and Puducherry zone, said the GST Council has helped in bringing the Central and States together in rationalising the tax regime. While the GST has been successfully implemented one of the serious issues which the officials have come across during audits is the fake input tax credit (ITC) where more than ₹1 lakh crore fake ITC has been detected with hardly 5% recovery done from these fake ITCs. Mr. Niwas also highlighted the need for preventing revenue leakages. A.R.S. Kumar, Principal Chief Commissioner of CGST and Central Excise of Tamilnadu and Puducherry zone, also spoke on the occasion.

X, India Spar Over Lawyer's 'Tom, Dick, And Harry' Remark For Government Officials
A lawyer for Elon Musk's X told an Indian court on Tuesday that every "Tom, Dick, and Harry" government official had been authorised to issue content takedown orders, drawing a sharp rebuke from New Delhi's counsel in the latest clash over content moderation. X has long been at loggerheads with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government over content removal requests. The remarks were made during a hearing on the U.S. firm's challenge to a government-run website it says is a "censorship portal" that allows officials to issue content removal orders. New Delhi says the website is only to swiftly notify companies of their due diligence obligations. India is a critical growth market for X owner Musk, who is getting closer to launching his other key ventures Starlink and Tesla in the country. During the court hearing, X's lawyer, K. G. Raghavan, said it recently received a notice from the railways department to remove a video in which a car was being driven on a railway track. That was news, but the government found it unlawful, he told the court. "This is the danger, My Lord, that is done now, if every Tom, Dick, and Harry officer is authorised," Raghavan told the high court in the southern state of Karnataka. The phrase drew immediate condemnation from India's Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who said "officers are not Tom, Dick, or Harry ... they are statutory functionaries". "No social media intermediary can expect completely unregulated functioning," Mehta said. India's IT ministry and X did not respond to Reuters queries. In 2021, X, formerly called Twitter, was locked in a stand-off with the Indian government over non-compliance with legal orders to block certain tweets. It later complied, but is still locked in a court fight related to the move.
