Law college rape: Cops seek custody of accused
2
Kolkata: The Kolkata Police on Friday produced the four accused in the law college gang rape case at a local court and requested police custody for three main accused — Monojit Mishra and his aides, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee — till Aug 3, and security guard Pinaki Mukherjee till Aug 4.
Cops claimed their questioning was necessary to verify the role of each accused by analysing report of electronic evidence and other documents, the final reports of which have arrived.
The development came amid Mishra seeking bail for the first time. His counsel also claimed police torture inside prison van. Mukherjee also moved court and sought bail.
The order has been kept in abeyance till Aug 5. This is the first time that the Kolkata Police asked for custody of any accused under BNS in the Alipore court — also the first in a heinous crime — after the accused spent over two weeks in judicial custody, said sources. Cops had pre-poned the production, the original date being fixed on Aug 5.

Cab Driver Who Held Family "Hostage" To Outrun Noida Cops Arrested
A cab driver has been arrested after he held a family "hostage" during their ride as Noida Police chased the speeding car for deliberately jumping barricades, officials said on Saturday. PCR sirens blaring in the background, a four-year-old frightened girl crying and her parents pleading the driver to stop the vehicle -- showed a video of the nerve-racking incident recorded by the family. Noida Phase 3 Police said the accused has been arrested and two Aadhaar cards were found from his possession -- one in the name of 'Nasim' and another 'Sonu'. On Thursday at around 1:30 pm, Sanjay Mohan booked a cab for Delhi's Connaught Place from his home in Greater Noida. Mohan, his wife and their four-year-old daughter sat in the cab and started their ride. However, at Parthala bridge in Noida, police signaled the driver to stop but he sped off, jumping the barricades, the police said. Stunned by the driver's sudden move, the couple requested him to stop the car and drop them off. However, he ignored and began driving rashly for several kilometers to escape the PCR van chasing him, they said. The couple kept pleading and when the driver managed to outrun the police team, he stopped the vehicle for barely a few seconds at TP Nagar. As soon as the family got down, he fled, they said. The entire incident was recorded by the family. It surfaced on social media on Friday, prompting officials to identify and nab the accused, the police said. Central Noida DCP Shakti Mohan Awasthy said, "A viral video of rash driving of a cab driver went viral on August 14. Police registered a case against him at Phase 3 Police Station and later the driver identified as Nasim was arrested from Sahara cut." "The Wagon R has been seized and a challan of Rs 29,500 was issued," he said. According to Mohan, his wife suffered minor injuries in her hand. A case has been registered against the accused under BNS sections 137 (2) (kidnapping), 127 (2) (wrongful confinement), 281 (rash driving), 319 (cheating by personation, 318 (4) (cheating), 336 (2) (forgery), 338 (forgery of valuable security) and others at Phase 3 Police Station, they said. Bihar man, sole breadwinner, had gone to ‘offer namaz' when dargah roof near Humayun's Tomb collapsed
Moin Uddin, a father of two, had gone to offer Friday prayers when the roof of a dargah near Humayun's Tomb collapsed in the national capital on Friday, killing the 32-year-old and five others. A migrant from Bihar, Uddin worked at a garment shop and was the sole breadwinner for his family, which included his five-year-old son, three-year-old daughter, parents, and younger brother. "He had gone to offer Friday namaz," said Moin's landlord, recalling the tragedy when the structure near Humayun's Tomb collapsed. Around 3:30 pm on Friday, the roof of Dargah Sharif Patte Shah where around 15 people had taken shelter due to heavy rain collapsed. The premises house a mosque, a dargah, and at least two rooms. The dargah shares its boundary with the 16th-century garden tomb commissioned by Mughal emperor Humayun's first wife, Bega Begum, in 1558. A total of six people, including a 79-year-old man and three women, died in the incident, while a four-year-old boy was among the five injured, police said. Five fire tenders were rushed to the spot and rescued 10–12 people trapped under the debris. The Delhi Police, Fire Services, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) took part in the rescue operations. Police have seized the mosque's DVR recordings and are questioning its caretakers. Vishal Kumar, an eyewitness, told PTI, "I work at Humayun's Tomb. When we heard the noise, my supervisor came running. At least 10 to 12 people were trapped under the debris. The imam is also among the injured." Another eyewitness described how close she came to being buried under the rubble. "I was only two steps away from entering the room," she said. "It started raining, and everyone went inside to take shelter. Suddenly, the wall collapsed. I kept shouting for help but there was no one nearby. Then some people came running, and we started pulling people out," she added. The Delhi Police registered a case of negligence against unknown persons. The police filed a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections 290 which pertains to negligent conduct with respect to pulling down, repairing or constructing buildings, etc. Section 125 which relates to the act endangering life or personal safety of others and 106 that applies when death is caused by negligence are the other criminal laws the accused have been been levied.
