Royals Make Concerning Cole Ragans Announcement After Loss to Yankees

After a tremendous 2024 season, it would appear Cole Ragans just isn't the same this year. Despite owning a 2.28 ERA after his first four starts this season, Ragans now has a 5.18 ERA, and five of his last six starts have yielded four or more runs.

Much of that was attributed to a groin injury that sidelined Ragans on May 16. When he returned June 5 against the Cardinals in St. Louis, his performance wasn't much better, as he yielded five runs in three innings in what was statistically his worst start of the season.
There might be a reason for Ragans' rough recent outing, and Royals fans aren't thrilled.

Ragans went back on the 15-day IL, this time with a rotator cuff strain, the team announced. Hard-throwing reliever Lucas Erceg, acquired at the 2024 trade deadline, was reinstated in a corresponding move.
The injury, which was retroactive to June 8, appears to be wholly unrelated to his previous groin injury, though it's possible that he injured his shoulder in an attempt to compensate for his injured leg.

It's a big hit for the Royals' rotation, though rookie phenom Noah Cameron has dazzled in Ragans' place, and Kris Bubic has entered the All-Star conversation with his stellar performance of late.
One user on X pointed out that Ragans has been very unlucky statistically, with his expected ERA sitting at 2.60, and his 32.9% whiff percentage being an elite 91st percentile.
All of that doesn't matter if Ragans can't stay on the field, though, and Royals fans have reason to be worried about their ace, who started Game 1 of the American League Wild Card last fall.

Phillies plan to use 6-man rotation with Aaron Nola's return from IL, says manager Rob Thomson

Aaron Nola is scheduled to be activated from the injured list and start for the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday against the Washington Nationals. With Nola's return, manager Rob Thomson told reporters on Thursday that the Phillies will go with a six-man rotation for at least one turn. Jesús Luzardo started the series opener on Thursday with Zack Wheeler scheduled for Friday and Taijuan Walker — who Thomson said was the No. 6 starter — going on Saturday. After Nola starts on Sunday, the rest of the rotation will line up with Ranger Suárez starting against the Seattle Mariners on Monday, followed by Cristopher Sánchez on Tuesday. Thomson's decision might look smarter after Luzardo gave up three runs on four hits and three walks in Thursday's 3-2 loss to the Nationals. Suárez has also struggled recently, allowing five or more runs in three of his past five starts. In Thomson's view, the starters' workload is wearing them down. "Just getting some of these guys some extra rest because we've been grinding on them pretty hard all year," Thomson said, via the Associated Press. "The one downside to it is you've got to take somebody out of your bullpen, so you're a little short there but we'll just have to figure it out." Philadelphia leads MLB with 687 1/3 innings from its starting pitchers. Sánchez tops Phillies starters with 150 2/3 innings, while Wheeler has logged 144 2/3 frames. After Thursday's start, Luzardo is at 139 innings, followed by Suárez with 112 1/3. Nola returning to the rotation should help relieve some of those innings. However, he may take a while before he can build up a higher workload. Nola hasn't pitched for the Phillies since May 14 after suffering a sprained right ankle that he initially tried to pitch through before going on the IL. That may be why he compiled a 6.16 ERA and 1-7 record before being sidelined. In his three rehab starts, Nola collected a 2.19 ERA in 12 1/3 innings with 17 strikeouts — including 11 in his final appearance. At 69-52, the Phillies go into the weekend with a five-game lead over the New York Mets (64-57) for first place in the NL East. The Mets lost to the Atlanta Braves on Thursday, 4-3.

José Ramírez has 3 hits to help Guardians rally past Marlins, move closer to AL wild-card spot

CLEVELAND (AP) — José Ramírez had three hits and scored three runs, Gabriel Arias had a pair of RBIs and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Miami Marlins 9-4 on Thursday night. The Guardians trailed 3-0 in the first and 4-3 in the fourth, but rallied for their 23rd win in 32 games and moved within one-half game of the idle New York Yankees for the final American League wild-card spot. Arias' sacrifice fly in a two-run fifth against Edward Cabrera (6-6) put Cleveland ahead for good at 5-4. David Fry and Brayan Rocchio both singled in runs in the seventh, when the Guardians scored four times off Valente Bellozo. Tanner Bibee (9-9) extended his winning streak to five by working 5 2/3 innings and giving up four runs (two earned). Cade Smith entered with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth and retired Liam Hicks for his sixth save. Augustin Ramírez had an RBI single in the first when Miami took a 3-0 lead. The other runs came in when Guardians catcher Austin Hedges dropped a throw at the plate, allowing Kyle Stowers and Ramírez to score. Marlins rookie Jakob Marsee, who had a team record-tying seven RBIs Tuesday, went 0 for 4. Cabrera gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings. Key moment Stowers was initially called out at the plate in the first, but the ball slipped out of Hedges' glove, prompting umpire Clint Vondrak to declare him safe. Key stat Ramírez moved past Kenny Lofton into third in franchise history with 977 runs. The seven-time All-Star has spent his entire 13-year career with Cleveland. Up next Marlins: RHP Sandy Alcantara (6-11, 6.55 ERA) starts Friday in the opener of a three-game series at Boston. Guardians: LHP Joey Cantillo (3-2, 4.11 ERA) pitches Friday as Cleveland hosts Atlanta. ___ AP MLB:

One too many: Nationals 3, Phillies 2

Jesús Luzardo was excellent through six innings but hit a wall in the seventh, as Orion Kerkering and the Phillies offense couldn't help him out as Philadelphia dropped its third game in a row, this time by a final score of 3-2 to the Nationals. Luzardo had allowed one run through six innings but left with the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh. Kerkering couldn't complete a Houdini act while the Phillies offense could only muster two runs despite totaling ten hits. Luzardo started the game strong by picking up a pair of strikeouts in the first despite a single and a stolen base from Dylan Crews. He then came out in the second and struck out the side on 14 pitches. Luzardo was settling in to the game before allowing a home run to Paul De Jong in the fourth with one out that tied the game at 1-1. De Jong jumped all over a first pitch fastball from Luzardo after striking out in his first at bat. But after that home run, Luzardo retired the next six hitters in order before allowing a one-out walk to Crews in the sixth. That runner was quickly erased when Josh Bell grounded into a double play started by Luzardo and finished by a strong throw from Bryson Stott. Rob Thomson elected to send Luzardo back out for the seventh at just 83 pitches despite having a rested back end of the bullpen, but it quickly appeared that the lefty was running out of gas. De Jong walked to begin the inning after a six pitch at-bat before Riley Adams ripped a double to left that put runners at second and third with no outs. Luzardo stayed in to face left hander Daylen Lile but wasn't able to put him away, issuing another walk that loaded the bases and ended his night. Orion Kerkering inherited the bases loaded, no outs jam clinging to a 2-1 lead and retired the first hitter on a pop-up to shallow left field. But Kerkering then allowed a single to Jose Tena that got past a drawn in Trea Turner at shortstop, scoring both runners and giving the Nats a 3-2 lead. Kerkering went on to retire the next two hitters, but the damage was done. The tying and go-ahead runs were charged to Luzardo's line who finished with 6 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 3 BB, 7 K on 97 pitches. The Phillies offense got started early, as Bryce Harper scored their first run with an RBI force out in the third inning. The run was possible thanks to a leadoff double over the third base bag by Bryson Stott and the first of three infield singles on the night from Turner. It was the first run the Phillies have scored in the first three innings since last Friday in Texas. But the offense wasn't able to do much else against Washington starter Brad Lord until the fifth, when Kyle Schwarber muscled a pitch off the barrel to the wall in right center that scored Turner from first with two outs and gave the Phillies a 2-1 lead. That would ultimately be it for the night from the Phillies offense however, as they managed just four more hits the rest of the game, all singles. Max Kepler led off the ninth with a base hit to put the tying run on, but Edmundo Sosa inexplicably bunted ball four in a 3-1 count to sacrifice Kepler to second. A Stott groundout moved Kepler to third with two outs, but Turner couldn't come up with heroics as he struck out on a sinker way inside to end the game. The Phillies will look to snap their three game losing streak tomorrow when they send Zack Wheeler (10-6, 2.68) to the mound against MacKenzie Gore (5-12, 4.09) of the Nationals. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 PM.
