Alabama Announces Blockbuster Matchup Against Legendary Coach

Yahoo14-05-2025
The Alabama Crimson Tide are looking to build off a disappointing end to their 2024-25 college basketball campaign as they got overwhelmed in the Elite Eight against the Duke Blue Devils.
Losing sharpshooters Mark Sears and Labaron Philon are pieces that need to be filled, and can expect head coach Nate Oats shape his roster to make another deep run next year.

They have announced a blockbuster matchup that is going to be scheduled for the 2026-27 season.
At Madison Square Garden on November 8, Oats and the Crimson Tide will be taking on the St. John's Red Storm, led by legendary head coach Rick Pitino.

Pitino most recently shared Coach of the Year honors with Auburn Tigers coach Bruce Pearl, and has turned around St. John's to be one of college basketball's top schools.
The Red Storm had their magical run end early at the hands of John Calipari's ferocious Arkansas team, who eventually fell to Texas Tech in the Sweet 16.
In the 26-27 season, Pitino and Oats will battle in one of the nation's top venues at MSG.

Oats and Pitino have faced off just twice with each coach winning a game. Oats started off 1-0 after his No. 2 seed Tide defeated Pitino's No. 15 seed Iona Gaels in the 2020-21 NCAA Tournament.
Pitino got his revenge during an invitational that following November thanks to some magic from Walter Clayton Jr. off the bench, who later transferred to Florida and won a national championship.
The meeting in 2026 will be the third meeting, and with two top programs in St. John's and Alabama, will make for an intense meeting that will prepare both teams for a title run later in the year.

Big Ten coach of the year predictions

Penn State head coach James Franklin is entering his 12th season at the helm of the Nittany Lions, and he does so with one of the best overall rosters he has had to work with. That has put Franklin in the spotlight brighter than ever before as he looks to take the next step toward being an elite head coach of an elite college football program. Penn State will start the year with national title-contending expectations after a deep run to the College Football Playoff semifinal, and this is a year where many believe Franklin could be on the verge of silencing critics once and for all. So, how does he look as a Big Ten coach of the year candidate? Pretty good, one would think. Here are our picks for the Big Ten's coach of the year for the 2025 season. Andrew Deal: James Franklin, Penn State James Franklin finally gets over the "big game" hump this year. Based on my other predictions, Franklin has to be the coach of the year. A pretty favorable schedule has Oregon traveling to Happy Valley for the White Out game. However, the Nittany Lions have to travel to Columbus for a battle with the Buckeyes. Penn State returns a ton of impact players from last season, while Ohio State will have to fill holes in some key positions. If Penn State goes 11-1 or 12-0, Franklin will have every right to win the Big Ten Coach of the Year. Sam Woloson: James Franklin, Penn State This is an interesting one, because the Coach of the Year award has recently gone to the best story, not the best coach overall. Curt Cignetti and David Braun led Indiana and Northwestern to surprise seasons in 2024 and 2023, respectively, but neither team nor coach were the best in the conference. If you wanna go off of the best story, I think James Franklin exorcising his big game demons and winning a conference title could fit the bill, especially if he beats Ohio State to do it. Christopher Sheppard: Curt Cignetti, Indiana It will be hard to repeat his stunning success from last year, but Cignetti has a chance yet again to keep the Hoosiers competitive. While he lost two of his best offensive players in Kurtis Rourke and Justice Ellison to the NFL, his recruiting abilities and retention of key players from last year's portal haul make the Hoosiers fun and frisky yet again. Fernando Mendoza brings poise and composure to the QB position, throwing for just over 3,000 yards last year. Elijah Sarratt is perhaps the Big Ten's most underappreciated WR1, and is first among all FBS juniors in receiving touchdowns. And don't forget about Mikail Kamara and D'angelo Ponds defensively, whose decisions to forgo the draft give the Hoosiers two studs in both the D-line and secondary. Look for the man who had people Googling his name to continue to do things no other Indiana head coach has dared to do. I would not be surprised if Indiana is in the CFP yet maybe even have a Big Ten title game appearance to show for it along the way. Kevin McGuire: Matt Rhule, Nebraska I am anticipating big things out of Penn State this season under the leadership of James Franklin, but I also take into account the trend of the Big Ten coach of the year honors going to a coach who doesn't necessarily start with a loaded roster with national title aspirations. So my pick will go to Matt Rhule, who I believe has the ability to take Nebraska to a 10-win season that flirts with being on the College Football Playoff radar. This can easily blow up in my face in the first month of the season, but I think Rhule continues his trend of program improvement with the Cornhuskers and puts together an impressive season in Lincoln. CBS Sports thinks Florida football is 'overrated' heading into 2025 campaign

Florida football returns to the field in just over a week and the Gator Nation could not be more excited about the upcoming 2025 campaign. After a successful finish last fall, the faithful fans are hoping for an even better run this time around. However, Billy Napier and Co. face another brutal schedule that is arguably the toughest among FBS schools while playing in the über-competetive Southeastern Confernece. The overall consensus on Florida's outlook has been a mixed bag, with some projecting a possible College Football Playoff appearance while others think the Gators will finish outside the top 25. CBS Sports recently assembled its college football staff to offer their SEC expert picks for the upcoming season, breaking down the contenders and pretenders while also providing bold predictions for the season ahead. Unfortunately for Florida, they landed in the "most overrated team" category. What CBS Sports says about Florida football's outlook "I'm a believer in Billy Napier and DJ Lagway, but I can't get past that brutal schedule again", John Talty begins — with an assist from Chip Patterson. "Napier did a terrific job managing a treacherous situation with so much outside noise calling for his job and still guiding the Gators to an 8-5 record. That has cranked up the offseason hype machine and landed the Gators a preseason top 15 position, but it's hard to see Florida really improving much off last year's 8-5 record," they continue. "Florida plays four top 10 teams (Texas, Georgia, LSU and Miami) plus No. 19 Texas A&M, No. 21 Ole Miss and No. 24 Tennessee. If Napier can get to nine or more wins with that schedule, he deserves a raise and extension." For what it is worth, the group also has the top-ranked Longhorns in that same category, along with the Rebels, Vols and South Carolina Gamecocks. CBS Sports' bold prediction for Florida football "Florida starts the season in the top 15 and yet ends the year unranked after another grueling schedule deflates the Gators' hype balloon. Florida will be a better team than it was in 2024 and I'm a believer in DJ Lagway but the Gators' have a brutal four-game stretch all against top 20 teams — LSU, Miami, Texas and Texas A&M — and still play Georgia, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Florida State," Talty notes. "Napier was a miracle worker getting last year's team to 8-5 and if he can somehow improve on that with this year's slate, make him Coach of the Year." Florida football's season opener The Orange and Blue open up the 2025 campaign at home inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 30, against the Long Island Sharks. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network+.
