Newcastle move for Ramsdale after Trafford setback

Yahoo15 hours ago
Newcastle United are working on a deal to sign Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, according to Sky Sports.
The Magpies are eager to strengthen their options in goal and have made a formal offer to Southampton.
According to The Athletic, the proposal is for a loan move with an option to buy Ramsdale permanently.
Talks between the two clubs remain ongoing, but no deal has been agreed upon at this stage.
Newcastle seek new goalkeeper after Trafford blow
Newcastle have been active in the market this summer as they search for a new first-choice goalkeeper.
They had been chasing James Trafford, but that move now looks unlikely. The Burnley keeper is expected to rejoin Manchester City.
Newcastle had hoped to secure Trafford earlier in the summer before the Club World Cup, but City were not open to a deal at the time.
With that move now off the table, Ramsdale has emerged as a serious alternative.
Southampton are open to various types of deals. These include a full transfer, a loan with a sizeable fee and future option, or keeping the player at the club.
Ramsdale joined Southampton from Arsenal in a £25 million transfer last summer. He is under contract at the club until 2029.
The 27-year-old made 32 appearances for Southampton last season in all competitions. He kept just three clean sheets as the club finished bottom of the Premier League.
That campaign marked Ramsdale's third top-flight relegation. Despite this, he remains highly regarded and has senior England experience.
Ramsdale previously played under Newcastle manager Eddie Howe during their time together at Bournemouth, from 2017 to 2020.
Before joining Southampton, Ramsdale spent three years at Arsenal. He was the club's starting goalkeeper as they finished second in the 2022-23 Premier League season.
However, he lost his spot to David Raya the following year and featured mostly in cup competitions.
A possible reunion with Howe could offer him a new start at St James' Park.

Youri Tielemans gives honest Champions League verdict after Aston Villa disappointment

If Aston Villa achieve their goals in the upcoming campaign, Youri Tielemans will play a key role. The club's player of the season last term, Tielemans is one appearance shy of a century in claret and blue after joining on a free transfer from Leicester City two summers ago - a move that has proven to be an excellent pick-up. Tielemans essentially replaced Douglas Luiz last summer, despite already being in Emery's squad, and quickly dispelled any fears about how Villa would cope without the Brazilian. After posting 11 goal contributions in his first season at Villa, Tielemans managed 15 in the last campaign, also ranking in the Premier League's top 10 for metrics like key passes, passes into the final third, progressive passes, through balls, and even tackles won. 'I was very consistent in most of the games,' Tielemans said in an exclusive interview with BirminghamLive in Nashville. 'I actually felt stronger and stronger as the season went on. I am very happy with last season, but now I want to build on that, stay consistent and help the team to hopefully achieve our targets.' Villa are currently out in the States, gearing up for a third full season under Unai Emery, who has transformed the club since replacing Steven Gerrard in November 2022. Tielemans was the first summer signing Emery made as Villa manager. Although it took him time to adapt to what the Spaniard wanted from him on the pitch, he has become a crucial element of the team. After starting in the 2-2 draw with Frankfurt on Saturday, the Belgian will step up his fitness in the coming days and weeks, with Villa playing MLS sides St. Louis and Nashville this week, followed by matches against AS Roma, Marseille, and Villarreal next week. 'We know how training camps are, we are out on the grass trying to put some movements together and plans for when the season starts,' the midfielder continued. 'We also have physical work and it is really good to be together for a period of time. You just want to enjoy the time with each other and get to know each other better than what you already know. 'Pre-season is all about a lot of running and preparing for the season ahead.' Villa's first objective every season is to qualify for European football, but next season they will have two shots at achieving their aspirational goal of securing Champions League qualification. A disappointing 2-0 defeat at Manchester United on the final day of last season denied Villa a return to UEFA's elite club competition. At 28 years of age, and with over 600 club and national team appearances to his name, Tielemans is now one of the most experienced heads in Emery's squad. He will be important both on and off the pitch next term as Villa look to return to the Champions League and end their 29-year wait for a trophy. "I know I have a lot of experience, I started very young and I have travelled in two different countries now. For me, it is a natural process,' Tielemans explained. 'I know I'm one of the most experienced players now, but I just try to enjoy my football and show on the pitch how it needs to be and how it works - hopefully the rest follows.' However, the former Leicester star claims it's getting harder every year to get into the Champions League. 'As an individual I just want to stay consistent and play as well as possible and stay healthy. Then, on the other side, with the team, we just really want to push on and try to get that Champions League spot which we just missed out on last year," he added. 'We know every season gets more difficult so we just have to take it from the game. Prepare well now and then in the first game go full on and we will see where we go.' West Ham United want Arsenal midfielder Fabio Vieira

West Ham United are keen on signing Arsenal midfielder Fabio Vieira this summer and have added him to their wishlist, according to journalist and transfer insider Ben Jacobs. West Ham want to strengthen their options in midfield at the London Stadium club heading into the new season as manager Graham Potter looks to hit the ground running. The 25-year-old Gunners star has now emerged as a target but the Hammers have yet to approach Arsenal. Vieira is currently not in the plans of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta having not joined the squad on their pre-season tour after he spent last season on loan with Porto. The Portuguese, dubbed a 'special talent' by the Gunners boss has two years left on his current contract, and a sale could be on the cards. A loan deal could also be an option, and West Ham could do with his services in the middle of the park given his Premier League experience and quality. Vieira joined Arsenal from Porto in the summer of 2022 in a deal worth £32 million, playing 33 times in his debut season, but he made 16 appearances in 2023-24 due to the options available to Arteta. The Spaniard has further bolstered his midfield ranks this summer and there is no space for the Portuguese in his team again. However, West Ham could have a spot for him and the chance to return to the Premier League to prove himself could be appealing. Vieira featured in 42 games last term at Porto, weighing in with five goals and six assists, and he would fancy his chances of impressing in the English top-flight. His major strengths include crossing, holding on to the ball, playing key passes, taking set-pieces and defending, and the Hammers could do with those qualities in a midfielder next season.
