Eyeing farmers, Vijay to hold roadshow from delta in Aug

Time of India4 hours ago

Chennai: To woo the electorally significant farming community, TVK leader and actor Vijay will start his state-wide tour in August from the Cauvery delta. Also on his agenda is wooing some of the DMK allies after ruling out a tie-up with AIADMK, which has joined hands with BJP again, multiple sources told TOI.
The actor wrapped up his shoot for 'Jana Nayakan', reportedly his last film, scheduled for release in Jan. Following a meeting with booth-level agents in Coimbatore, Vijay is planning a second roadshow in another region. The party is considering a district unit meeting led by the actor, along with a second phase of enrolment drive, aiming for two crore members. The party says it has enrolled 1.1 crore members across the state.
An associate of Vijay said, "The delta has been chosen for his campaign launch with farmers and land as the focus."
The state-wide tour will likely involve a campaign vehicle, similar to his event in Parandur, where he protested the destruction of farmland for the proposed greenfield airport. In 2011 the actor addressed his first public rally in Nagapattinam (in the delta), organised by Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, to condemn attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen.

Sources indicate that Vijay aims to lead an alliance and share power with allies. While AIADMK's attempts to bring him on board were unsuccessful, the BJP camp has been showing interest in aligning with the actor to unseat the DMK govt. Leaders of the state BJP unit, including its president Nainar Nagenthran and K Annamalai, had recently extended birthday wishes to Vijay. Former Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundararajan referred to Vijay's films in her greeting, encouraging him to "support good deeds against evil forces".
A senior TVK functionary dismissed the possibility of an alliance with BJP. He said, "Vijay is not interested in aligning with BJP. Let them do anything. But alliance with BJP is 100% ruled out."
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, who greeted Vijay on X last year, chose to remain silent this year. This comes against the backdrop of talks with TVK stalling due to Vijay's demand for 50% seats and CM candidature for the first half of the tenure.

Palaniswami slams Stalin, asks if DMK has locus standi to utter Anna's name

AIADMK top leader Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday wondered if Chief Minister MK Stalin and the DMK had locus standi to utter Dravidian icon C N Annadurai's name and slammed the CM for 'speaking politics in government function.' The AIADMK top leader yet again blamed the DMK for "family rule" .(PTI file photo) Palaniswami's tirade follows Stalin's "AIADMK has mortgaged the name of Anna itself," jibe. Alleging that the chief minister did nothing for the people during the past 4-year rule of the DMK, Palaniswami said the AIADMK was founded by late leader M G Ramachandran in 1972 as Karunanidhi "buried Anna's ideology" and transformed the DMK into a "family camp," for loot. Further, the leader of opposition said: 'We will not give up Anna even for a day, even a minute, who lives not only in our party's name and flag, but also in our blood.' The AIADMK top leader yet again blamed the DMK for "family rule" and said it went against the ideology of Anna who founded the DMK in 1949. Stalin, who has only "commission, collection and corruption as policy," need not lecture the AIADMK on Periyar and Anna, Palaniswami said. The former chief minister vowed that "peace, prosperity, growth and state rights, lost due to the DMK," would be retrieved by him following a win in the 2026 Assembly election. He said this was his first poll assurance. In a government event at Tirupathur near Vellore, the chief minister, without naming the BJP or any Right wing outfit, said they were trying hard to cause confusion. Invoking the legacy of Periyar, Anna and Karunanidhi, and hailing them for nurturing and shaping the state, Stalin said: "You (Hindu Munnani/BJP) are playing video trivializing such leaders! When such a video clip was played, the mute spectators were those who run their party in the name of Anna, the DMK president hit out at the AIADMK, the archrival. "They (AIADMK) have mortgaged the name of Anna itself. Those who have mortgaged their party, should not be allowed to mortgage Tamil Nadu tomorrow," he said and urged the people to understand the objective of the conspiracy against Tamil Nadu and its people and teach a fitting lesson to the AIADMK and BJP. Annadurai passed away on February 3, 1969. He was the chief minister from 1967 till 1969.

Country will not forget dark days of Emergency: Saikia

1 2 3 Guwahati: Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia on Thursday said the state and the country can never forget or allow the return of Congress's dark days. Marking the 50th anniversary since the imposition of Emergency, the party felicitated several Loktantra Senanis (Soldiers of Democracy) who "suffered the brutalities of the Congress regime" during that period. In a statement issued to the media on Thursday from the Assam state BJP headquarters, it was highlighted that 25 June 2025 marks the completion of 50 years since the imposition of Emergency by the Indira Gandhi-led Congress govt in 1975 — a day that marked the beginning of one of the darkest chapters in India's democratic history. As part of the state BJP's three-day observance of "Constitution Murder Day," a special public exhibition depicting the horrors of the Emergency period under the Congress rule was inaugurated at the BJP headquarters. The exhibition was formally opened at 12 noon on Thursday with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by former Assam BJP President and MLA, Siddhartha Bhattacharya. Participating in the special programme, Assam BJP president and MP Dilip Saikia delivered a strong message, saying, "The dark days inflicted upon the nation by the Congress party can never be forgotten. We shall never allow such days to return in the future. The Congress and the Gandhi family trampled upon India's democratic values to cling to their political power." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "It is ironic and unfortunate that leaders like Rahul Gandhi theatrically pull out the Constitution from their pockets and pretend to be its saviour when, in truth, the Congress and the Gandhi family butchered the very soul of the Constitution by amending it 102 times out of the total 109 amendments," Saikia added.

Bommai criticises state govt's financial management and debt burden

Haveri: Former chief minister Basavaraj Bommai strongly criticised the state govt's financial management, asserting that it is financially insolvent without presenting a White Paper on the situation. He contended that the administration placed an additional debt of Rs 1 lakh on each state resident. Speaking to reporters in Haveri on Thursday, he referenced home minister G Parameshwara's acknowledgment of the govt's fund shortage. "If Parameshwara says something, it is as good as Lord Shiva himself saying it," he remarked. Responding to queries about the BJP's stance on the state's economic situation, the former CM stated that rather than a white paper, the Congress govt possesses a black paper. He highlighted that prices and taxes rose universally, with families bearing an annual burden of Rs 50,000, while each individual carries an extra Rs 1 lakh in debt. Regarding the housing controversy, the MP noted that MLA BR Patil, who initially voiced concerns, became quiet since becoming vice-chairman of the Planning Commission. He suggested Patil might be considered for a cabinet position in the next expansion. Addressing agricultural issues, Bommai mentioned his recent concerns about sub-standard soybean seeds in Ranebennur. He pointed out the current fertiliser shortage despite heavy rains and increasing demand for urea. He accused the agriculture department of wholesale profiteering and neglecting the Haveri district's needs. He emphasised that farmers require timely support during monsoon, regardless of administrative changes in the district.
