Castle revamp gathers pace as councillor tours site

HAVERFORDWEST'S Castle Ward County Councillor Thomas Tudor says the regeneration of Haverfordwest Castle is an 'exciting time' for the town, after joining other stakeholders on a tour of the historic site.
Cllr Tudor was invited by Pembrokeshire County Council's Heart of Pembrokeshire team to see the progress being made on the flagship heritage attraction project.
The major redevelopment includes the Gaol building and Governor's House, which are being transformed into a new visitor centre telling the story of Pembrokeshire past, present and future, using interactive and technology-based displays.
The wider site will also house a refurbished Haverfordwest Museum, focusing on the town's history, and the inner bailey will be used as an events space for theatre, music and community events.
Access to the castle will be improved with way-marking throughout the town and a new signature bridge over the Western Cleddau linking to Riverside.
According to the council, 88% of 1,000 residents surveyed supported redeveloping the castle into a museum, visitor attraction and community space.
The scheme is funded by the UK Government's Levelling Up Fund, with match funding from Pembrokeshire County Council. Additional funding is being sought to fit out the attraction and fund further activities.
Haverfordwest Castle is temporarily closed while work continues. The town museum has been relocated to Riverside during the redevelopment, and the castle car park is shut. The attraction is expected to open in spring 2027.

Which Powys projects get £11million in Levelling Up funds

Resurfacing works, active travel routes and a new footbridge are among the projects in Powys set to benefit from £11million of Government cash. Powys Council has revealed which projects in Mid Wales will be backed with the latest cash from the UK Government's Levelling Up Fund for the 2025/26 financial year. The council says there is a focus on delivering projects that aim to boost recreational tourism and contribute to local economic growth, specifically ones aimed at transport investment. Among these projects is a resurfacing scheme to improve access to tourist hotspots and support the National Cycle Network. Another is active travel projects in Llandrindod Lake, Brecon promenade, the next phase of the Llandrindod Wells to Howey route and a section of the Crickhowell to Llangattock route, designed to improve access between towns and surrounding tourist destinations, which the council hopes will make it easier for visitors to explore Powys using active modes and improve accessibility for key locations. Replacing the Pont y Milgy footbridge in Ystradgynlais will be the first project in a wider scheme to improve visitors' accessibility to Powys' Rights of Way network. Cllr Jake Berriman, Leader of Powys County Council, said: 'This latest contribution of Levelling Up Funding from UK Government will allow us to begin making the improvements needed to the county's transport infrastructure. 'Through this timely investment, we aim to improve accessibility to key services, encourage active travel and support recreational activities, providing better journeys for everyone and improve connectivity to tourist hotspots. 'We are hopeful to receive confirmation of additional Levelling Up Funding to enable us to complete further projects in the future.' The Levelling Up funding aims to address regional disparities across the UK by investing in vital local infrastructure projects to increase pride in place and bring people closer to opportunity. Cllr Berriman added: 'This latest contribution of Levelling Up Funding from UK Government will allow us to begin making the improvements needed to the county's transport infrastructure. 'Through this timely investment, we aim to improve accessibility to key services, encourage active travel and support recreational activities, providing better journeys for everyone and improve connectivity to tourist hotspots.'

Millions in funding secured for transport and roads in Powys

Over £10 million has been secured in levelling-up funding to improve roads and transport. MP for Montgomeryshire and Glyndŵr, Steve Witherden has announced £10m secured for 'vital economic regeneration projects' in Powys. Ministers have confirmed Powys will receive an allocation of up to £10,797,949.27 in 2025/26 as part of this Government's economic regeneration initiatives, the largest amount provided to a local authority in this round of funding. The funding, which comes as part of the Levelling Up Fund scheme, will enable Powys County Council to start work on projects to boost connectivity and support the tourist economy. The scheme includes support for rights of way refurbishment and road resurfacing as well as measures focused on active travel. Powys County Council bosses told the County Times that further details on specific projects would be revealed in the coming weeks. 'I'm really delighted we've been able to secure this funding,' said Mr Witherden. 'This money will go a long way towards improving our community infrastructure across Montgomeryshire. 'I was elected last year on a promise to deliver the vital upgrades to infrastructure that we need both locally and nationally after many years of decline. 'This money will improve the state of our roads, broaden connectivity, and help to boost the local economy. 'I will continue working hard to get a fair deal for people in Powys and make sure that we build on this progress.' 'Improving local transport and connectivity will make a massive difference by making it easier for people to travel to work and education, visit friends and family or access vital appointments.
