Lyon edge Arsenal 2-1 in first leg of women's Champions League semis
LONDON, April 19 (Reuters) - Olympique Lyonnais beat Arsenal 2-1 in the first leg of their women's Champions League semi-final on Saturday after Melchie Dumornay grabbed a winner in the 82nd minute to give the record eight-times champions the upper hand in the tie.
Lyon took the lead 17 minutes in when Kadidiatou Diani was set through on goal on the right wing and the French forward drilled her shot across Manuela Zinsberger in Arsenal's goal to find the far bottom corner.
Arsenal earned a lifeline in the second half when a penalty was awarded after a VAR check for a foul on Leah Williamson and Mariona Caldentey stepped up to take the spot kick and level the score after 78 minutes.
But any hopes of a comeback were snuffed out by Lyon four minutes later when Haitian striker Dumornay used her pace to power past the defence before pulling the trigger to make it 2-1, silencing the 40,000 fans at Emirates Stadium.
The return leg will be played in Lyon on April 27.

It comes as a majority of fans expressed their frustrations over the technology in a recent survey Motherwell's majority shareholder has called for a wider discussion over VAR in Scottish football after none of their members backed the technology in its current form during a consultation. Fans were almost equally split on whether VAR should be scrapped immediately or "fundamentally reformed" but none of the supporters who took part in the Well Society survey felt VAR should remain unchanged. Less than one per cent were "unsure". A total of 63 per cent of respondents said they did not support VAR in Scottish football while 60 per cent said the use of the video technology had made their experience as a supporter "significantly worse". A Well Society statement read: "Fans spoke about long delays, a lack of clear communication, inconsistent decisions, and a growing sense of disconnect between those in the stands and those officiating on the pitch. "Rather than building trust in decisions, many feel VAR has done the opposite, creating more distance between supporters and the game itself. "Some still see potential for technology to play a role in football, if used in the right way. But the overwhelming feeling from our fan base is that VAR, as it stands in Scotland, is simply not working. A system designed to bring clarity has, for many, only added more confusion." The use of video technology to aid match officials was brought into the Premiership in October 2022 and a number of managers have expressed their frustration over its implementation since then. Well Society director David Cullinan added: "As a fan-owned club, we have a duty to listen. This wasn't about grabbing attention. It was about listening to what our supporters really think. And they've made it clear that VAR, as things stand, is letting them down. "The Society will be taking their views on board and working on a plan of action, which we'll share with members in due course. "This is just the start of a wider discussion, and we're calling on clubs across Scotland to stand with their supporters and be part of it."

England legend Gary Lineker is surprised Arsenal did not push harder to sign Liam Delap and believes the striker could be the 'missing ingredient' for Chelsea. Chelsea beat off strong competition from Manchester United to lure Delap away from Ipswich this summer, with the Blues capturing the 22-year-old forward for a fee of just £30million. Though Arsenal had been tentatively linked, it's understood the Gunners decided to focus their efforts on other attacking targets overseas, namely RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres. Delap has put pen to paper on a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, tying him to the west London giants until 2031. We said many times this season that Chelsea also needed back-up for [Nicolas] Jackson up top, or an alternative. 'I think he's a young, exciting centre-forward. 'I saw someone say they saw a bit of a young Alan Shearer in him. Shearer with a full head of hair! 'I think that's the only thing that Chelsea were missing really.' Lineker has been impressed by Delap's 'intelligent' movement on the pitch and is confident the attacker has the mentality to succeed at Chelsea. 'Jackson's got something in him, but his finishing isn't as good as a could be and if Delap does realise his full potential, that might just be the missing ingredient. We'll see,' he added. 'What I see in him is movement which is intelligent, I see someone that's not scared… I know that sounds ridiculous for a centre-forward but I judge it on when he's goes one-on-one with the goalkeeper, I think he'll finish, he'll score. 'Certain players you get that and now he's got to prove it at a bigger club. I know he was at Manchester City, but he didn't really feature much there and he has done at Ipswich. 'He's now got to step into the limelight, it's a big club, Chelsea, they won a Chelsea, of course, this season as well, so he'll go into this season with a very good side. 'He'll have to deal with pressure, but you get a feeling that it's not going to faze him and he's a very, very good finisher. 'That's the most important thing, having a cool head in those circumstances, and I think Chelsea have got a good one. 'You can never be sure, obviously, but I've obviously been singing his praises for quite a long time.' Alan Shearer was similarly upbeat about Chelsea's 'smart' piece of transfer business and feels Delap is 'only going to get better' over the coming years. 'I like him as well. For £30m, I think it's a no-brainer,' the ex-Newcastle and England striker, the Premier League's all-time top goalscorer, chimed in. 'I think Chelsea have got a great deal and I gather that there were other big clubs in for him. 'I think he's a bit old-fashioned, he's like a throwback from what a centre-forward was maybe 20 or 30 years ago where they were all in fashion: aggressive, horrible to play against, doesn't mind mixing it up and can run in behind. 'Obviously, he scores goals. The number of goals he scored in a really struggling team, that is only going to get better. 'At his age, his ability he's got now… I think he's got a really bright future and I would have liked to have seen Newcastle get him, but for whatever reason he's decided to go with Chelsea and I think that's a really smart move for them.'
