Animal Friends Release Date Delayed for Ryan Reynolds & Jason Momoa Movie
Animal Friends will now release in US theaters on May 1, 2026, nearly seven months after its previously announced premiere date, October 10, 2025. Besides Reynolds and Momoa, the cast of Animal Friends includes Aubrey Plaza, Addison Rae, Dan Levy, Lil Rel Howery, and Ellie Bamber. Peter Atencio directed the feature from a script by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider.
This is not the first time that Animal Friends has suffered a delay in its release. Sony Pictures initially set its release date for August 15, 2025. However, Warner Bros. then acquired the distribution rights for the movie and changed it to October 10.
Animal Friends was described as an 'R-rated road trip adventure' when it was announced in April 2023. Production reportedly began in June 2023 and concluded in April 2024.
Notably, Maximum Effort is a production company that Reynolds co-founded. Some of the projects they have produced are Deadpool 2 (2018), Free Guy (2021), Shotgun Wedding (2022), and Deadpool & Wolverine (2024). Meanwhile, filmmaker and producer Namit Malhotra founded Prime Focus Media. Their upcoming projects include Ramayana, featuring Ranbir Kapoor, and The Angry Birds Movie 3.
DNEG, noted for their work on Nimona (2023) and Dune: Part Two (2024), is handling the animation and visual effects on Animal Friends.
Peter Atencio previously directed action comedy movies Keanu (2016) and The Machine (2023). Burrows and Mider were the creators of the GQ original animated series Gentlemen Lobsters. They were also the co-writers of the 2018 teen comedy The Package.

Ryan Reynolds's ad agency, Maximum Effort, was behind the Gwyneth Paltrow Astronomer ad
Gwyneth Paltrow isn't the only big name attached to Astronomer's cheeky response to " Coldplaygate." Ryan Reynolds' company, Maximum Effort, announced its involvement with a lighthearted X post on Sunday. "Thank you for your interest in Maximum Effort, @astronomerio! We'll now get back to what we do best: motion pictures with Hugh Jackman, Fastvertising and Wrexham football," the post said. "We'll leave data workflow automation to ̶ G̶w̶y̶n̶e̶t̶h̶ ̶P̶a̶ Astronomer. Reynolds launched Maximum Effort with his business partner, George Dewey, in 2018. The company makes ads, movies, and shows, often with an irreverent bent. Astronomer's cofounder and new CEO, Pete DeJoy, thanked Maximum Effort in a LinkedIn post on Sunday after praising his staff. "I'd also like to thank the team at Maximum Effort for their remarkable work with our very temporary spokesperson," DeJoy said. "As Gwyneth Paltrow said, now it's time for us to return to what we do best: delivering game-changing results for our customers. We look forward to what this next chapter holds for Astronomer." Although Astronomer began July as a little-known tech company, it grew into a pop culture phenomenon after its now-former CEO, Andy Byron, attended a Coldplay concert with the company's now-former head of human resources, Kristin Cabot. A "kiss cam" projected the pair embracing on a jumbotron during the concert. Cabot spun around and shielded her face, while Byron attempted to duck out of view. "Uh oh, what? Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy," Coldplay front man Chris Martin said onstage. A clip of the moment — now dubbed "Coldplaygate" — was shared widely on social media, where people cracked jokes and shared related memes. Companies and sports teams also got in on the fun. Following the flood of attention, Byron and Cabot resigned from their positions with the company. Astronomer was left to pick up the remains of its public reputation. That's when Paltrow entered the scene. Paltrow, who was previously married to Martin, appeared as a "temporary" spokesperson for Astronomer in a one-minute video shared on social media. At the time of writing, the video has 149,000 likes and over 36 million views. Instead of answering the internet's burning questions, Paltrow used the platform to promote Astronomer's products. "Thank you for your interest in Astronomer," Paltrow said at the video's end.

Horror Hit '28 Years Later' New On Streaming This Week, Report Says
Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Alfie Williams in "28 Years Later." Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodi Comer and Ralph Fiennes' hit horror thriller 28 Years Later is reportedly coming to digital streaming this week. The third film in the horror film series that began with 28 Days Later in 2002, 28 Years Later reunites the original film's director, Danny Boyle, and its screenwriter, Alex Garland. The film was released in theaters on June 20. The summary for 28 Years Later reads, 'It's been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. 'When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.' According to When to Stream, 28 Years Later is expected to debut on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, July 29. While the streaming tracker is typically accurate with its PVOD reports, When to Stream noted that 28 Years Later Sony Pictures Entertainment has not announced or confirmed the release date and it is subject to change. When it is released, 28 Years Later will be available on several digital platforms, including Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube. Prime Video currently has 28 Years Later listed for pre-order for $24.99, which is also the film's purchase price on PVOD. Since PVOD rentals typically run $5 less than purchase prices, viewers can expect to rent 28 Years Later for $19.99 for a 48-hour period. The film is still playing in theaters. So far, 28 Years Later has earned $70 million domestically and $80 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $150 million. The film had a $60 million production before prints and advertising costs, per The Numbers. Danny Boyle Says '28 Years Later' Is Not A Zombie Film While those who have the Rage Virus in 28 Years Later have zombie-like qualities, Danny Boyle insisted in an interview with TIME Magazine before the film's release in theaters that the antagonists are not zombies. 'We had this thing about, 'No, they're not zombies. They're infected,'' Boyle told TIME. 'We wanted them to behave in a different way physically, but they also weren't undead. They could die and they will die, but so will you if they catch you.' In 28 Years Later, Aaron Taylor-Johnson's character, Jamie, takes his 12-year-old son, Spike (Alfie Williams), to the mainland where the infected roam over the objections of his wife and the boy's mother, Isla (Jodie Comer). The trip to the mainland is a rite of passage where the younger people sheltered by their island community learn to hunt the infected. Bold told TIME that part of the storyline was influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. 'When COVID first happened, we wore gloves, we disinfected groceries,' Boyle told TIME. 'But gradually over time, you start taking more risks. You don't stay in that super alert stage. You evolve. And so it is in 28 Years. They begin to take risks. Jamie takes his 12-year-old son to the mainland even though, as the mom says, that's f---ing crazy.' Rated R, 28 Years Later — which is executive produced by 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy — is expected to arrive on PVOD on Tuesday.

Ryan Reynolds Zings Rob Mac at Just for Laughs Awards
An awards show for comedians always has its fair share of roast-worthy one-liners and zingers. So when Ryan Reynolds on Friday paraded onstage for the 2025 Just For Laughs awards show to honor Rob Mac with a Generation Award, the Deadpool franchise star couldn't resist a jab at his fellow Wrexham AFC owner and executive producer of Welcome to Wrexham. More from The Hollywood Reporter Former Obama Speechwriter Jon Lovett on How Trump Is Funny Like a "Clown With a Gun" Oasis Play Wembley: 5 Takeaways From Liam and Noel Gallagher's Nostalgia-Packed Return to Stage Rachel Zegler Returns to 'Evita' in London Friday After Exiting Performance Mid-Show Thursday Night 'Rob, second place to the lifetime achievement award, amazing,' Reynolds said as he began his tribute to his friend and longtime business partner after a lifetime achievement trophy had just been handed out to comedian George Wallace. 'Hollywood can be an insipid shithouse of round-the-clock shamelessness,' Reynolds said as he touted the need for rare character among creatives and execs in a business short of it. 'You have to be willing to be excited to grind and push a dream up a hill and have the wherewithal to do it on your own,' he added about those with the right stuff, before insisting Mac had all of that and more. 'Nobody does 17 seasons of a television show with the same cast and crew and also happens to be a dick,' Reynolds said of Mac's long-running star turn on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. 'And without Rob, there would be no donkey series called Welcome to Wrexham.' When he joined Reynolds on stage, Mac recalled getting into the comedy business while inside of him was a 'terrified little boy who feels very alone.' He added to make it in Hollywood, he had to find people 'who understand me, who see me, who understand who I am.' 'I'm here because of Ryan Reynolds, who not only took my career in the stratosphere but also flew here to give this to me,' Mac added, noting Reynolds had given up precious time as an busy, A-list actor to lead the JFL tribute. Mac also gave respect to Wrexham in Wales, his wife, Kaitlin Olson, FX and a host of others. 'I don't consider myself one of you. I'm holding on. I'm watching what you do, and I'm holding on for dear life,' Mac added before he received a second standing ovation from the JFL audience. Elsewhere during the Montreal awards show hosted by Matthew Broussard, there were endless jokes and other admissions of the pain that inspired stand-up comedy material, performances and careers. Benito Skinner, known for his online persona Benny Drama and as the creator and star of the Prime Video comedy Overcompensating, recalled having started out as a social media content creator and avoiding eye contact with comics when straying into comedy clubs. 'I still avoid eye contact with comedians, and I think you should too. We are all mentally ill,' a sarcastic Skinner said as he received a breakout comedy star of the year prize from Mary Beth Barone. Skinner also thanked JFL for aupporting his career, as did Hannah Berner, winner of the rising comedy star award this year. 'I want to thank JFL for putting me on New Faces a couple years ago and giving me my confidence. JFL has been so incredible to me and to all the comics who took me under their wings,' Berner said while clutching her comedy star trophy on stage at the MTelus theater on St. Catherine's Street. For a comedy business long dominated by men, Fortune Feimster and Mae Martin felt the weight of the moment when the duo came up to receive the podcast of the year prize for their Handsome offering aimed at LGBTQ+ fans, including on behalf of co-host Tig Notaro, at the ComedyPRO conference kudos-fest. 'This means a lot to me, because I'm Canadian,' Martin said while on stage. 'For our community, representation is still very much needed and wanted, and it's cool to be talking about these different topics,' Feimster added. Also Friday, when it came time for George Wallace, star of Amazon's Clean Slate comedy and a stand-up legend, to receive a lifetime achievement award and a standing ovation in Montreal, he talked himself up with trademark charm and humor. 'That means you've been around for a while and know a few things. And I know a few things,' Wallace said after 49 years in the business and first coming to Just For Laughs to perform in the 1980s. 'I said God, let me be the greatest bullshitter in the world. And he said, well, Donald Trump beat you to that. I'm not supposed to do political stuff,' he added. Wallace also thanked his five agents, who were at his side in Montreal. 'They spent more money coming up here than they make for me,' he joked.
