Assembly bypolls underway in four states; results on June 23
Gujarat is witnessing bypolls in two constituencies. Kadi is going to polls following the death of sitting MLA Karsanbhai Solanki, while Visavadar was vacated after the resignation of Bhupendra Bhayani. A total of 24 candidates are in the fray across both seats, with over 5 lakh voters eligible to cast their ballots.
In Punjab, the Ludhiana West seat fell vacant after the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi. Four major parties -- AAP, Congress, BJP, and SAD -- are in the race along with 10 other candidates. Voting continues till 6 PM with more than 1.75 lakh voters eligible.
Keralas Nilambur constituency is also voting today after the resignation of MLA P.V. Anvar. Ten candidates are contesting, including heavyweights from the LDF, UDF, and NDA. The seat has over 2.3 lakh voters, and 14 polling stations have been marked sensitive.
In West Bengal, the Kaliganj bypoll was triggered by the death of sitting MLA Nasiruddin Ahamed. Voting across all seats started at 7 AM and will conclude at 6 PM.
Election authorities have assured adequate security and smooth polling across all constituencies.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday (August 19, 2025) accused the Congress of making 'baseless' claims about 'vote theft' and targeting the Election Commission of India in 'collusion' with a Delhi-based think tank. This came after Sanjay Kumar, a psephologist and a professor with the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), who had shared voter data from two Maharashtra Assembly seats related to last year's State election in a post on X on Sunday (August 17, 2025), subsequently deleted his post on Tuesday (August 19, 2025), apologising for posting erroneous data. The post had claimed a significant decrease in voter numbers in two Assembly seats in the State election compared to the 2024 general election, which was held nearly six months earlier. 'Fake data' Reacting sharply, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia lashed out at Mr. Kumar for posting 'false data' which he claimed was used by the Opposition to target the EC, calling it a 'dangerous game'. 'This survey organisation [CSDS] is nothing but a puppet at the hands of leaders like Rahul Gandhi who could not win people's trust. He needs such an organisation which can provide fake data and facts so that he can make baseless allegations,' Mr. Bhatia said. 'Congress leader Pawan Khera tweets on this and then deletes. Rahul Gandhi's baseless allegations are also based on CSDS data,' he added. Deleting his post on Tuesday (August 19, 2025), Mr. Kumar wrote on X, 'I sincerely apologise for the tweets posted regarding Maharashtra elections. An error occurred while comparing the data of 2024 LS and 2024 AS. The data in the row was misread by our Data team.' The erroneous tweet has since been removed, he said, adding, 'I had no intention of dispersing any form of misinformation.'

In a tersely-worded speech, Kumar rejected as 'baseless" the allegations of double voting and 'vote theft", saying it was an insult to the Constitution. He also called on Rahul Gandhi to either sign an affidavit or apologise to the country for his claims of vote theft. We are not against an individual: Congress MP Mallu Ravi on VP elections
New Delhi [India], August 19 (ANI): Congress MP Mallu Ravi on Tuesday said that the opposition parties were not against Maharashtra Governor and NDA Vice Presidential candidate CP Radhakrishnan as an individual, since it is a battle of ideology. 'We are not against CP Radhakrishnan, there are two ideals seen in India, one is secular ideology – Congress and UPA; non-secular ideology is NDA. That is why we are not against an individual; this is the battle of ideology," Ravi told ANI. He appealed to all the regional parties, including the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and YSRCP, to support the candidature of Sudershan Reddy. 'We just wanted to start meeting individually and collectively. Through you, we are requesting all the TDP, YSRCP and even from Punjab and Bihar to support the candidature of B Sudershan Reddy," Ravi said. 'We, the MPs of Telangana, are extremely happy that B Sudershan Reddy has been announced for the Vice President post by the INDIA bloc. Whether it is South, North, East, or West, nothing matters," Reddy said.
