Officials told to speed-up land acquisition for Polavaram R&R, NH projects

The Hindua day ago
District Collector K. Vetriselvi on Tuesday directed officials to speed up land acquisition works related to the Polavaram Project's R&R packages, national highways, and YSR Jagananna Saswatha Bhoohakku Mariyu Bhooraksha (YSR–JBM) survey units, and also ensure smooth clearance for 4G mobile towers of Airtel, Jio, and BSNL without inconveniencing the public.
In a video conference held on Tuesday (August 5, 2025), the Collector reviewed the progress of land acquisition, R&R colony constructions, and 4G tower permissions with mandal and revenue officials.
Highlighting the urgency of land needs for Polavaram-related R&R packages, the Collector said that around 5,000 acres are required in the district. While 800 acres have already been identified in Buttayagudem and Jeelugumilli mandals, another 600 acres have recently been marked. She instructed officials to complete the remaining land acquisition by August 15.
She emphasised that Gram Sabhas must be held in all concerned villages after identifying land parcels. Officials, including RDOs and DSPs, should participate and engage with farmers transparently during these public hearings. The compensation must be paid strictly as per government norms, and the process should be voluntary and farmer-friendly, she said.
The Collector also instructed that targets under the YSR–JBM survey units must be met, and land for national highway development must be handed over quickly. Regarding 4G tower installations, permissions should be granted only after field-level inspection, ensuring minimum public inconvenience and adequate distance from residential areas.
Joint Collector P. Dhatri Reddy, ITDA PO Apurva Bharat, Special Collector S. Sarala Vandana, DRO V. Vishweshwara Rao, and other mandal-level officials joined the review virtually.

TCS to roll out hikes for majority of staff from Sept 1

Bengaluru: TCS, which is planning to cut 2% of its workforce—over 12,000 mid and senior employees—this year, surprised its staff by announcing salary hikes for eligible associates up to grade C3A and equivalent (freshers to mid-level), covering nearly 80% of its workforce. This comes at a time when many of its peers have either deferred salary hikes or placed them on hold. The salary hike will be effective from Sept 1, according to an internal communication sent out by CHRO Milind Lakkad and CHRO-designate K Sudeep on Wednesday. When TOI reached out to TCS, the company said, "We can confirm that we will be issuing wage hikes to around 80% of our employees effective Sept 1, 2025." During the April earnings presser, TCS indicated that it might have to defer its annual increments, a rare deviation from its April cycle, coinciding with clients' downbeat sentiment emerging from a slowdown and tariff-related uncertainty. Even in the June quarter earnings, Lakkad said the company has not made any decision yet regarding wage hikes. TCS's June quarter results reflected lacklustre performance attributed to weak macroeconomic conditions, cautious client sentiment, delayed decision-making, and the winding down of the BSNL deal. Its revenue for the June quarter fell 3.1% year-on-year in constant currency and 3.3% sequentially, as geopolitical uncertainties dampened demand. However, the company has not disclosed the average hike in its communication. News of this year's salary increase comes amid a challenging period marked by cautious client spending and delayed decisions in key markets like the US and Europe. Nevertheless, the company remains optimistic about a turnaround, anticipating stronger demand in the second half of the year. Indian IT CEOs have adopted a cautious tone in their commentary on wage hikes. When TOI asked Infosys CEO Salil Parekh about the timelines for wage hikes, he said, "We concluded our compensation increases for Q4 and Q1 of the last fiscal year….Now that this cycle is complete, we are beginning to evaluate the timing for the next round—as we do after every cycle. During Covid, the standard cycle was disrupted, leading to two increases over 18 months. There are no changes planned. We will stick with our existing process and announce the next cycle at the right time."

Mobile tariff design skewed in India; rich paying less: Airtel MD

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) Bharti Airtel sees an opportunity in raising tariffs for data services as it feels that the rich are paying less and the poor are not required to pay anymore, a senior official of the company said. A customer needs to pay ₹ 199 for a month-long connection which comes with unlimited local, STD, roaming calls and a 2GB data limit. By paying ₹ 100 more, a subscriber on Airtel can get 1 GB data per day and it goes up to 3 GB data per day with plans starting from ₹ 449 onwards. "The architecture of pricing in India is quite skewed. At the entry level itself or just above the entry level, you get so much data allowance, calling and messaging, that you really don't have any reason to upgrade. It's just an unfortunate situation where people who can afford to pay, the rich, are paying less and the poor, you know, we don't need to charge the poor anymore," Bharti Airtel Vice-Chairman and MD, Gopal Vittal said. He was replying to a question on tariffs during the company's earnings call for the first quarter of the current fiscal. Bharti Airtel has posted a 43 per cent year-on-year increase in its consolidated profit to ₹ 5,947.9 crore in the quarter ended June 2025 mainly on account of an increase in customer base. Vittal said if India had a more sensible pricing architecture like Indonesia, ARPU (average revenue per user) would have been substantially higher than where the country's telecom industry is at present without any pain to customers at the low end. As per UK-based data price information platform average data price in India was around 16 cents while in Indonesia it was around 28 cents in 2023. Bharti Airtel India operations average revenue per user (ARPU), a key matrix to determine a telecom operator's growth, in India increased to ₹ 250 during the June 2025 quarter under review compared to ₹ 211 in the same period a year ago. The mobile data consumption on Airtel's India network increased by 13.4 per cent to 26.9 GB per customer per month. The customer base of Airtel's Home Services segment, which includes fixed broadband services, grew 37.7 per cent on YoY basis to 1.09 crore but the ARPU in the segment declined by 6.1 per cent to ₹ 537 in June 2025 quarter. Consolidated revenue from operations of Bharti Airtel increased by 28.4 per cent to ₹ 49,463 crore during the reporting quarter from ₹ 38,506.4 crore in the June quarter of the last year.
