From JD to BJP and out: It's Dhankhar's turn
Jagdeep Dhankhar
is only the latest case of a bunch of political travellers -- with roots in the perennially bickering erstwhile
Janata Dal
(JD) mob -- who had travelled into the
BJP
, to bag prized posts in the
Narendra Modi
establishment only to be ejected at the sight of crossing the line or error of judgement.
Ex-JD-Congressman Dhankhar, who progressed from the West Bengal Raj Bhavan to the Vice-President's office, shares the same zig-zag journey of fellow 'Jat farmer leader'
Satyapal Malik
, a former JD leader who moved to the BJP and held gubernatorial offices in Bihar, J&K, Odisha, Goa and Meghalaya during the Modi regime only to end up with a bitter and noisy parting. Many in the Opposition are now watching whether Dhankhar too will make noises or opt to play it safe.
It was often said that in the post-2014 BJP surge propelled by the Modi effect, the premium was on ideological alignment and Sangh Parivar grooming, from ABVP-Yuva Morcha upwards, to be considered for key posts in the Centre, and flourish -- with a few exceptions for technocrats with ministerial briefs. Yet, some political aberrations became notable for the way they flourished in the BJP, mostly from the JD background, and some converts from the Congress. Yet, many of them eventually got grounded mostly for apparently failing to master the temperament and instincts of 'the homegrown'.
However, a colleague of Dhankhar and Mallik in the Janata Dal platform, who too later moved to the BJP ecosystem, is
Arif Mohd Khan
, who is going steady in the Modi regime as a rare governor, who got a second posting -- that too in poll-bound Bihar -- after completing a full-term in Kerala. In between, the Modi regime also entered into an ambitious ruling coalition experiment in J&K with yet another Congressman turned Janata Dal-turned PDP leader Mufti Mohd Sayed, who was also with Khan in the VP Singh-floated Jan Morch (of Congress rebels) against Rajiv Gandhi regime, but that coalition in Srinagar unravelled due to in-built contradictions after Mehbooba Mufti became CM after her father's untimely death.
Yet another JD-pedigreed man who found short-term luck as CM of Karnataka was Basavraj Bommai, son of former JD national president SR Bommai, who led the BJP to defeat. Incidentally, a BJP leader, who had held key ministerial posts in the Vajpayee regime and who later made a lot of noise when a 'marg darshak mandal' was created for 75+ old BJP leaders post-2014, was Yashwant Sinha, who too had travelled into the BJP from Janata Dal (from its Chandra Shekhar faction). It was from the Janata Dal camp that Maneka Gandhi (along with her son Varun) joined the BJP with much fanfare as the 'other half of the Gandhi family' during the Vajpayee-Advani era and flourished long before they were denied election tickets and grounded recently.
Live Events
Among the Congress converts to the BJP post-2014, Himanta Biswa Sarma is perceived to be the most flourishing one so far, as the party's CM of Assam and a pointsman for the Northeast. Many others, including original Team Rahul members Jyotiraditya Scindia, Jatin Prasada and RPN Singh, thrive in the Modi establishment as ministers and legislators.

‘Today, we're 4th largest economy…days are over when India was considered a soft state': Sudhanshu Trivedi
Delivering the 4th Balramji Dass Tandon Memorial Lecture at Panjab University, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said Sunday the world is watching India's rise closely but there is no need to fear it, as he underlined the nation's economic, strategic and cultural ascent under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking on the theme 'Why a Strong India Scares the World', Trivedi underscored that India now accounts for 48 per cent of global digital transactions, has 50 per cent of its installed power capacity from clean energy, and is the fastest-growing economy among the major countries. Referring to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the BJP national spokesperson said India's contribution to global growth is going to be 15 per cent, adding that according to Morgan Stanley, India will become the engine of global growth in the next decade. 'The Word Bank has stated that 16 crore people have been lifted out of extreme poverty. Today, we are the fourth largest economy in the world,' he said. Trivedi also noted India's co-chairing of the Global AI Summit as a marker of its growing international leadership. Quoting PM Modi, Trivedi stressed that 'this is the right time' for India, and those attempting to create confusion will not succeed. India's strength, he said, lies not only in its economic, military and intellectual capabilities but also in its spiritual and cultural power — unique assets that position India to shape the world order. He cited the UN resolution on yoga, co-sponsored by 177 countries, as a strong example of India's growing soft power. On the country's strong response to terrorism, he spoke of surgical strikes, the Balakot airstrike, and Operation Sindoor, emphasising that New India does not tolerate terror. The Operation Sindoor proved that Pakistan's nuclear threats do not work, marking the end of India's era as a soft state, the BJP MP said. 'Those days are over when India was considered a soft state,' he said. Explaining the communication between India's External Affairs Minister (S Jaishankar) and his Pakistani counterpart (Muhammad Ishaq Dar), Trivedi said the Operation Sindoor began at 1:05 am and concluded at 1:27 am. Pakistan was informed at 1:30 am, and it was clarified that the strike was against terrorists, not Pakistan's military installations, he said. He described it as a trap that Pakistan failed to recognise, which exposed the collusion of state and non-state actors within the neighbouring country. Trivedi also said that the world is seeking alternatives to China for industrial investment and that India is best positioned to offer this. India is the only country in the world that has received the S-400 missile system from Russia and advanced drone systems from the US, he said. Russia does not supply arms to any QUAD member nation, while the US does not supply defence equipment to any country receiving arms from Russia, which proves India's tactfulness, he said. On trade relations, Trivedi said the UK was more eager for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) than India, reflecting the country's rising economic stature. 'India is steadily becoming an economic superpower,' he said. Describing Balramji Dass Tandon as a 'Path Pradarshak Deepak' (guiding lamp), Trivedi paid rich tributes to him for his contributions to the RSS, BJP and the region. Lauding Tandon for his unwavering dedication to public service and organisational discipline, he referred to him as the 'foundation stone of the bright building which we are seeing now'. Speaking on the occasion, Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma supported the demand to bestow a Padma award posthumously on Balramji Tandon for his contributions to society and the nation. Sharma also shared his personal experience of working with him. The Panjab University Vice-Chancellor, Prof Renu Vig, highlighted the contribution of Panjab University both before and after India's independence, and spoke about the unique character of the university, which has continued its journey from being the fourth oldest university to becoming a modern inter-state body corporate, with several advanced facilities and notable achievements to its credit. Sanjay Tandon, president of the host foundation and son of Balramji Tandon, highlighted the teachings and high moral values of his father. He shared various examples from the 1965 and 1971 wars and the Covid-19 pandemic, drawing parallels with his father's values and underlining the importance of probity and being a 'karma yogi' in public life.

'Op Sindoor Roka Kyun?' Rahul Gandhi's Retort To Rajnath Singh's Remark 'Pakistan Begged To Stop'
/ Jul 28, 2025, 03:38PM IST A political firestorm erupted in Parliament over Operation Sindoor. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh declared that Pakistan begged India to stop the military campaign, but the Opposition, led by Rahul Gandhi, demanded answers. 'Why stop when the enemy was on its knees? Since when do we obey Pakistan?' Rahul thundered. Rajnath countered that India stopped only after achieving all military and political goals. 'Yes, we destroyed terror bases. Yes, we took revenge. No, we didn't suffer losses,' he asserted. The BJP accuses the Congress of undermining India's military success; the Opposition questions why the mission wasn't taken further. As emotions ran high, one thing became clear: the real battle is for control over India's narrative on national security.#operationsindoor #rajnathsingh #rahulgandhi #modivsrahul #pakistanbegged #loksabhadebate #indiandefence #trendingnews #bjpvscongress #nationalpride #indianpolitics #narendramodi #modidoctrine #pokstrikes #pahalgamattack #terrorresponse #bharatfirst #surgicalstrikes #toi #toibharat #bharat #trending #breakingnews #indianews

Haryana: Vikas Barala dropped from law officer post after not joining
Vikas Barala CHANDIGARH: In a significant turnaround by the Nayab Singh Saini-led BJP govt, the office of the Advocate General has dropped the name of Vikas Barala as a law officer as he did not report for joining, an official spokesperson of the state govt confirmed on Monday. The official categorically confirmed that except for Vikas Barala, the rest of the law officers appointed had joined and assumed charge. Consequent to the joining report compiled by the concerned authorities, Vikas Barala's name was dropped, the official remarked. Notably, the development came within a week after the Haryana govt notified the list of appointments of law officers in the office of the Advocate General Haryana to defend the state in the Punjab and Haryana High Court as well as the Supreme Court of India. On July 18, the Haryana govt notified the appointment of 92 law officers, including Vikas Barala, to the office of the Advocate General Haryana. Barala, who happens to be the son of Rajya Sabha MP Subash Barala, is facing trial as an accused in the stalking and attempted abduction of the daughter of a senior Haryana bureaucrat (now retired). His name figured as Assistant Advocate General (AAG) for defending cases of Haryana in New Delhi, including the Supreme Court of India. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn More - How Watching Videos Can Boost Your Income TheDaddest Undo This triggered controversy and put a question mark on the criteria adopted and the rules followed for the selection of names by the screening committee, which was constituted by the AG office. Opposition parties and leaders criticised the Saini-led govt on this appointment. As to why Vikas chose not to join remains a mystery. However, sources indicate that it was a decision of the party high command as well as the govt after he did not report for joining. The screening committee, which comprised two retired judges of the high court, ignored the serious charges against him. The members of the Advocate General Haryana-headed screening committee that recommended Vikas's appointment were Mani Ram Sharma (IAS), special secretary, home department as the nominee of the additional chief secretary (home), Ritu Garg, legal remembrancer, and two retired judges, Justice Darshan Singh and Justice H S Bhalla, who were members (eminent legal professionals). Normally, those having affiliation with the ruling party are appointed as law officers, and their tenure is co-terminus with the party in power. On August 5, 2017, Vikas Barala and his friend Ashish allegedly followed the bureaucrat's daughter and tried to stop the car of a senior Haryana bureaucrat. The girl called the Chandigarh police, who apprehended the boys. At the time of the incident, they were under the influence of liquor. Both were booked under section 354 D (stalking) of the IPC and under the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act. Later, police added two more sections for attempted kidnapping, and they were arrested. Vikas's father, Subhash Barala, was then serving as the state president of Haryana BJP. The trial of the case is currently pending before the district court in Chandigarh and is slated for hearing on August 2. The trial is at the stage of recording prosecution evidence.
