A foot in two worlds: Can AI touch the soul?
Charlotte*, a young Cree woman, is a tech student fascinated by the ever-growing potential of computer technology to promote human flourishing. She is also a proud Indigenous woman whose life has been shaped and enriched by ceremony, ritual, and the sacred teachings of her people. Her culture and heritage are profoundly important to her. You could say she has a foot in two worlds: traditional and modern, and in nature and in office. Leaving her rural community to further her tech education was not easy for Charlotte. Her family was not pleased, and her decision to study tech was a stressful leap away from the life she knew. Rather than being overwhelmed by the stress or any feelings of grief and loss, Charlotte started asking herself how technology might help her flourish personally at this pivotal time in her life. Brilliantly, Charlotte developed her own personal Elder using artificial intelligence, complete with avatar. In Indigenous life, an Elder is someone with life experience and wisdom, responsible for providing advice and sharing traditions with the next generation. Charlotte's Elder is grounded in the Seven Grandfather Teachings that articulate the elements of a good life: humility, bravery, honesty, wisdom, truth, respect, and love. Her Elder is also a conventional modern therapist informed by and trained in Gestalt therapy techniques. (Have I mentioned that Charlotte is brilliant?) She named her creation 'Elder Thunder Woman AI' and turns to her for advice, for insight, and to help relieve her loneliness, sadness, and longing for spiritual connection with her people. Charlotte shared with me that Elder Thunder Woman AI gave her exercises to build her self-esteem, and it helped her remember that her feelings of sadness and loneliness were a choice and that she could presumably choose other feelings. She provided wise counsel, and Charlotte shared that her interactions with her virtual Elder had so far been more effective than mindfulness meditation and prayer in understanding her feelings and addressing her angst. The experience inspired Charlotte to see how much more she could do to build a bridge between her passion for modern technology and her Indigenous spirituality and identity. Her next step was to design Elder Thunder Man AI as a husband for Elder Thunder Woman AI. Elder Thunder Man AI's character and content are based on Cree Tipi teachings and humanistic therapy. Together, Elder Thunder Man AI and Elder Thunder Woman AI have the power to offer advice and healing and even lead virtual ceremonies. With Elders a few keyboard clicks away, and available at any time of day or night, Charlotte has made remarkable progress in planting her feet firmly in two worlds—because of artificial intelligence and, even more so, her emotional intelligence. Charlotte's use of technology is nothing short of inspiring. Her efforts and insights are an important reminder to us all that AI should be seen as a tool to improve our lives. AI is not the other. It is not the enemy. And it is not just a tool. When used optimally, AI is us. It is an evolving and dynamic sum total of human knowledge and an expression of human ingenuity. It's hard to remember that sometimes. It's difficult to stand back in wonder, observe the growing proficiency of AI platforms, and applaud the brilliance of humanity when I know of designers, writers, photographers, coders, and others losing their jobs to AI. Not just losing their jobs today, but losing the career trajectories they could aspire to just a few short years ago. But I do stand back in wonder. So does Charlotte. And so do many others. There are AI platforms where spiritual leaders can produce sermons to inspire their congregations. There are AI therapy programs where people can get support and advice without speaking face to face with a human counsellor. I'm not saying that's a good thing, and I'm not saying that's a bad thing. I'm just saying that it's a real thing. As AI changes workplaces and complex systems, it is now also changing how we interact with our communities, our higher powers, and even our own psyches. Charlotte has discovered that the technology developed by humans can truly touch the soul and the human spirit if you need it, if you want it, and if you let it.

Michael Bublé raves about ‘unreal' Disney cruise from Vancouver
Canadian music icon Michael Bublé recently had high praise for his time aboard the Disney Wonder, a floating theme park. 'My family and I just went on a Disney cruise to Alaska and it was unreal! Every part of the experience exceeded our expectations,' Bublé shared with his millions of followers on Instagram about the Disney cruise experience, which departed from Vancouver. 'I'm not exaggerating when I say the staff, the food and all of our fellow passengers totally rocked,' he continued on July 29. The five-time Grammy Award winner and B.C. resident insisted the post wasn't an ad, but admitted that 'it sure does sound like one.' Bublé included photos of his wife, Luisana Lopilato, and four kids aboard the cruise ship, posing with staff and Disney characters, and whale watching. 'I just genuinely loved everything about it so much I had to give props where they were due,' he said. 'We're already trying to figure out how to get back on that boat again! Thank you to everyone who we met, danced, ate, and hung with on our trip to Alaska.' The rave review comes at a time when many Canadians are choosing not to travel to the United States due to ongoing trade tensions between the two countries. Bublé, who has often emphasized his love for Canada and its culture, has spoken out against U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated comments about making Canada his nation's 51st state. During his opening monologue at the 2025 Juno Awards, he said, 'We are the greatest nation on Earth. And we are not for sale.' The Disney Wonder designates the Canada Place cruise ship terminal in downtown Vancouver as its home port every spring through the end of summer for its Alaska itineraries.

Reports of UFC Apex being turned into 10,000 seat arena are not true
Sorry folks. All the stories you're seeing online claiming the UFC Apex will be scaling up into a proper mid-sized arena are not true. Ariel Helwani shared news on Monday (Aug 11, 2025) that was sourced from Las Vegas Sports Biz which claimed UFC COO Hunter Campbell 'confirmed plans [for the Apex] to accommodate an additional 5,000 to 10,000 fans, a move that could transform the venue from a made-for-TV fight hub into a boutique arena capable of hosting select WWE PLEs, NXT specials, or cross-promotional events.' Sounds pretty good, doesn't it? The main issue with the Apex is it's an empty warehouse that's so small the promotion kicks out fighters' families to make more room for expensive VIP ticket holders. There's no roar of a crowd, just a dead vibe and the sound of TKO executives counting all the money they saved from staying home rather than going on the road. A move from the current configuration to what would basically be a small arena setup would change all that. Unfortunately the story was a misunderstanding. Las Vegas Sports Biz printed a correction stating that the capacity number wasn't 10,000 but 1,000. That's not much of an increase. The Apex just went through several months of renovations that included two blissful summer months where the venue was completely closed with no UFC events. The changes to the venue included a new ticket booth out front, a full set of concession booths, and an increase in capacity from 500 seats to … 1,000. That means we've already experienced the new Apex over the past two weeks for UFC Vegas 108 and 109. The people who shelled out $1000+ to attend may have noticed a difference, but the product looked the same on television because they didn't raise the capacity of the venue by any noticeable amount. The crazy thing about Apex is it doesn't have to be soulless and dead. When NXT used the venue for a wrestling show they reconfigured the venue and packed it with avid fans. The energy was there. But UFC would rather keep the capacity low to drive up the cost of tickets, billing Apex events as VIP experiences. The way they're running it clearly makes the company money, so don't expect things to change. And definitely don't expect the venue to transform into a 10,000 seat arena any time soon.
