Epic Games wins partial victory in Australian court against Google, Apple
Epic Games, the company behind the popular online game Fortnite, won a partial victory in an Australian court in U.S. billionaire chief executive Tim Sweeney's claim that Google and Apple engaged in anti-competitive conduct in running their app stores.
Federal Court Justice Jonathan Beach on Tuesday upheld key parts of Epic's claim that the tech giants breached Australian competition laws by misusing their market power against app developers and using restrictive trade practices.
Google and Apple 's dominance of the app market had the effect of substantially lessening competition and breached Australian law, Beach found.
But the judge rejected some of Epic's claim including that Google and Apple engaged in unconscionable conduct as defined by Australian law.
Sweeney is also challenging Google and Apple dominance in the app markets through the courts in the United States and Britain.
The litigation began in August 2020 when Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store expelled Fortnite because Epic installed a direct payment feature in the extraordinarily popular game.
The court ruled both companies pressured app developers including Epic through contracts and technology to sell their products through the two dominant app stores.
Epic posted online that the judgment was: 'Another HUGE WIN for Epic Games!' Apple said the company 'faces fierce competition in every market where we operate.' 'We welcome the Australian court's rejection of some of Epic's claims, however, we strongly disagree with the Court's ruling on others,' Apple said in a statement.
Google said it would review the judgment. Google and Apple could potentially appeal the ruling before the Federal Court full bench.

Perplexity AI offers Google $34.5 bn for Chrome browser
Agencies Perplexity AI has offered Google $34.5 billion for its popular Chrome web browser, which the internet giant could potentially be forced to sell as part of antitrust proceedings. The whopping sum proposed in a letter of intent by Perplexity is nearly double the value of the startup, which was reportedly $18 billion in a recent funding round. 'This proposal is designed to satisfy an antitrust remedy in highest public interest by placing Chrome with a capable, independent operator focused on continuity, openness, and consumer protection,' Perplexity chief executive Aravind Srinivas said in the letter, a copy of which was seen by AFP. Google is awaiting U.S. District Court Judge Amit Mehta's ruling on what 'remedies' to impose, following a landmark decision last year that said the tech titan maintained an illegal monopoly in online search. U.S. government attorneys have called for Google to divest itself of the Chrome browser, contending that artificial intelligence is poised to ramp up the tech giant's dominance as the go-to window into the internet. Google has urged Mehta to reject the divestment, and his decision is expected by the end of the month. Google did not immediately respond to a request for offer vastly undervalues Chrome and 'should not be taken seriously,' Baird Equity Research analysts said in a note to investors. Given that Perplexity already has a browser that competes with Chrome, the San Francisco-based startup could be trying to spark others to bid or 'influence the pending decision' in the antitrust case, Baird analysts theorized. 'Either way, we believe Perplexity would view an independent Chromeor one no longer affiliated with Google as an advantage as it attempts to take browser share,' Baird analysts told investors.

Roblox reportedly banned in Qatar over child safety concerns
DOHA: Roblox, the popular online gaming and game creation platform, is reportedly no longer accessible in Qatar following a wave of public concern over child safety. The move comes after a recent social media campaign calling for the app to be banned due to its potential risks to children and teenagers. While Roblox remains downloadable from the Android and Apple app stores, users in Qatar are unable to use the platform. Upon launching the app, a message reading 'No Network. Please try when connected to internet' appears, preventing access beyond the home page. Similarly, the web version displays an error message: 'This site can't be reached.' Local news outlets, including Al Watan , report that the ban was imposed to protect children from what authorities view as moral and safety threats within the game. The platform allows users to create avatars, build games, and interact with others in shared digital environments—features that critics argue could expose young users to harmful content and behaviour. According to Al Jasra , concerns were heightened after incidents of virtual assaults and violations of religious and cultural values were reportedly documented within the game. In a statement cited by Al Sharq , technology and AI researcher Bahaa Al Ahmad emphasized that platforms like Roblox have evolved beyond simple gaming. 'These are now open digital spaces where children engage in real-life-like interactions,' he said, adding that such environments can influence children's psychological and behavioural development. As of now, Roblox has not issued an official response to the reported ban in Qatar.
