Jordan halts hiring of foreign workers
Jordan's Ministry of Labor suspended Thursday the recruitment of non-Jordanian workers after a three-month window.
The decision aims at meeting the labor needs of various economic sectors, the ministry's spokesperson, Mohammad Al-Zyoud, said in a statement Thursday.
He noted that the ministry will not reopen recruitment without a thorough and comprehensive review of the labor market.
Al-Zyoud stressed that inspection campaigns will continue in coordination with the Ministry of Interior and Public Security Directorate (PSD) across all governorates to identify and take legal action against employers hiring undocumented foreign workers.
The inspections also aim to ensure that workers brought in by private-sector businesses are employed by the companies that sponsored them.
Strict penalties will be imposed on any business found in violation, including suspension of recruitment privileges and refusal to renew work permits issued under the company's name.

Pedersen affirmed that cooperation between the United Nations and the Syrian government is very good, with the government fulfilling its duties to enhance security and stability across the country. Pedersen also pointed out that Israel continues to violate the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and carries out repeated attacks on Syrian territory, saying that there is no justification for these assaults, which must stop immediately. Hundreds of Syrian return home voluntarily from Jordan
Residents of the Syrian city of Homs welcomed a convoy of families returning voluntarily from Jordan after displacement during the Syrian uprising. The return was organized by the humanitarian group Waqf Farah in coordination with the Homs Governorate. Yahiya Rifai, a representative of the organization, told Syria's official news agency SANA that the convoy is the second to depart Jordan's Azraq camp voluntarily as part of ongoing efforts to support stability and the return of displaced families to their hometowns and villages. Rifai said the arrangements followed a visit by Waqf Farah's founder, Dr. Mohammad Rahif Hakmi, to Azraq camp, where coordination took place with relevant authorities to facilitate the return. The convoy included 235 families—around 730 people—who were previously forcibly displaced from Syria to Jordan. They arrived in Homs province aboard buses, accompanied by trucks carrying their belongings. The organization also distributed food baskets and clothing to all returning families. The convoy entered Syria through the Nassib border crossing in Daraa province on Saturday and continued to 14 residential areas in rural Homs, with support from Waqf Farah and in coordination with Syrian, Jordanian, and Emirati authorities.

He added that the inspection campaigns also aim to verify that the non-Jordanian labor recruited by private sector establishments in various sectors is actually working there, stressing that strict measures will be taken against establishments found to have non-working foreign labor. These measures include suspending recruitment and use of labor for the violating establishment and not renewing work permits issued in its name.
