I played Battlefield 6 early and the game has returned to its roots in the best way

Lets all forget about Battlefield 2042, because Battlefield 6 is more like Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4, so if you liked them, you'll love this!
After getting hands-on with Battlefield 6 at a preview event in London, I'm delighted to report that the series is reverting from Battlefield 2042's divisive evolution and is returning to what it does best, in the best way possible.

Battlefield 6 's predecessor was extremely underwhelming for Battlefield players. The quest for innovation went too far, moving away from the destruction, realism, and magic that made the series so popular. However, with its upcoming FPS title, EA has instead recognised what players loved about the older titles and doubled down on what made players love Battlefield games in the first place.

You've seen the first reveal trailer, and you've seen the multiplayer reveal trailer, but after playing it for around two hours at a preview event, here's my take on how Battlefield 6 is shaping up before launch.

Battlefield is back
Battlefield 6's movement feels more realistic and, therefore, slightly more stodgy than Call of Duty 's extreme omnimovement, yet it still feels responsive and not at all cumbersome. This is in part thanks to new movement features like the ability to crouch while running, lean, and peek with weapons, and the fact that when you slide, there's very little visual recoil and crosshair movement. It feels really, really good, and I can't wait to play more in the upcoming Battlefield 6 beta.
Gone are the operator-style choices, with Battlefield 6 bringing back the classic and iconic Class system, with four classes: Assault, Recon, Engineer, and Support. Each class has its own unique signature trait and signature gadget, with the Assault class featuring a stim that temporarily increases sprint speed and reduces explosion damage, while the Signature Trait is reduced fall damage and no movement speed penalty after falling.

It's certainly a more simplified system, but it absolutely works, particularly as you're not locked to certain weapons depending on the class you choose. For example, you can still choose a sniper when playing as the Assault class.
The gunplay feels great overall, with satisfying feedback and mechanics, particularly with carbines and sniper rifles, although I didn't really gel with the assault rifles that were on offer during my gameplay session, as they felt a little bit too slow, but without the payoff of being more powerful.
It doesn't feel like Call of Duty, but that's a good thing. Battlefield shouldn't feel like Call of Duty; it has its own unique combat identity and movement mechanics. Instead of trying to copy competitors, Battlefield 6 feels like a spiritual successor to Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4, two of the most popular games in the series. And, unlike Activision 's latest, there's no Nicki Minaj or Seth Rogen in sight.

The thing that Battlefield does better than anyone is destruction, and thankfully, there's even more destruction than ever before. Not only can you blast off the side of buildings and bridges to eliminate or get enemies in the open, you can also slam a sledgehammer into the floor of a building and take out a team below, or take out the roof and surprise them from below.
The only thing I couldn't quite work out is which buildings feature this mechanic, and which don't, as I found there was one specific building in the Empire State map where this was possible, a townhouse-style building that features heavily in the trailers, and it was unclear if other buildings could be destroyed in this way. Maybe it was due to the lack of time I had with the game, or the fact that I was playing an early version with limited maps, but it's something to keep an eye on at launch about how far that specific feature goes.
The maps I experienced all felt special and have the ability to be all-timers. Empire State, Siege of Cairo, Liberation Peak, and Iberian Offensive all looked and played great. And, thanks to them being huge maps that have cut down areas for certain game modes, and they've been tuned particularly for those specific modes, none of the maps felt out of place in Squad Deadmatch or Domination, as the playing area has been designed specifically for those modes.
Battlefield 6 is chaotic, loud, and destructive; it's a quintessential Battlefield experience that takes everything that made the series so popular and turns it up to 11. If you loved Battlefield 3 and 4, you'll love Battlefield 6. But, you don't get on with Battlefield generally, it might not be for you, because it's unapologetically Battlefield, and that's exactly what the series needed.

The open beta for Battlefield 6 has begun and EA has tried to make it as easy as possible for you to get access. After private gameplay sessions and numerous leaks, EA formally revealed Battlefield 6 with a proper trailer last week, followed by a multiplayer showcase on Thursday evening. Given the poor reception to 2021's Battlefield 2042, EA is pulling out all the stops with Battlefield 6, with no less than four whole studios working on it and alleged plans to reach 100 million players. With multiplayer gameplay streams and videos everywhere online, EA has also opened up pre-orders and, surprisingly, there are only two versions to choose from. Aside from a standard edition of Battlefield 6, EA is offering a special edition of the game dubbed the Phantom Edition. The standard edition is £59.99 on PC and £69.99 on consoles, although you can get a 10% discount if you have an EA Play membership. It sounds like handhelds in general aren't a priority. Battlefield 6's specs on PC are quite demanding, meaning even the strongest handheld PCs would struggle to get it running, with Zampella confirming the game won't work on Valve's Steam Deck. 'It does not work on Steam Deck. I think there are some non-Steam Deck handheld platforms that it will work on, probably, right? But I don't think, you know, it's probably not the best way to play the game,' Zampella told PCGamesN. All you need is an open beta code and then you can play on the format of your choice. The second open beta starts on Thursday, August 14 and runs until August 17. That should be particularly easy to pick up a code for, as EA wants as many people playing as possible. Platonic season two review: Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne stop at nothing to make you laugh – and it's joyful TV

The Studio, Seth Rogen's cosy Hollywood satire which dropped on Apple TV+ earlier this year, features a glut of industry figures cameoing as themselves: Martin Scorsese, Charlize Theron, Zac Efron, Ron Howard, Zoë Kravitz, Nicholas Stoller. Unless you also happen to work in the movie business, that last name probably won't mean much: in the show Stoller is introduced as a reliable writer of kid-friendly fare – The Muppets, Captain Underpants – who can make a decent job of the IP-driven film ('the Kool-Aid movie') that Rogen's studio head, Matt Remick, has been forced to pursue. In real life, Stoller did indeed write those films. Yet he's also a key figure in the later years of the Judd Apatow-abetted Frat Pack era, responsible for a number of box office hits including Sex Tape, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek and Neighbors, which starred Rogen and Rose Byrne as a couple warring with the fraternity next door. Pairing lowbrow farce with zingy dialogue and hapless beta male protagonists, these were out-and-out comedies made at a time when the genre occupied a significant slice of the cinematic zeitgeist. Those days are over, but Stoller has adapted his shtick to the requirements of the age. In Apple TV+'s Platonic, now returning for a second season, he teams up with his wife, co-writer Francesca Delbanco, for a comedy drama starring Rogen and Byrne, this time as two mischief-loving college pals reunited in midlife after a five-year falling out. Byrne is Sylvia, a married mother of three whose life of predictable happiness and domestic drudgery is beginning to chafe; Rogen plays Will, a recently divorced brewmaster who wears aspirationally quirky outfits and likes kicking over parked e-scooters. Platonic has a fair amount in common with its cinematic predecessors. It relies heavily on the likability of its stars and a healthy roster of eccentric supporting characters (including Sylvia's eight-year-old son, who coolly suggests controversial true-crime documentary Dahmer for family film night) and is powered by a series of silly set-pieces. Season one saw the duo snatch a collar off a ferocious doberman, stumble round a grocery store high on ketamine, and – my favourite – take a tour of the abandoned nursing home Sylvia feels cornered into buying (very 'colonial hospice, Cape Cod mortuary,' nods Will). There are also differences. Platonic is lightweight, comforting entertainment primarily focused on the gag, but it has real depth, too. During an argument, Will calls Sylvia 'a miserable stay-at-home mom who hangs out with me to escape your boring life.' That's not quite true: Sylvia's not miserable, she's a frustrated fun-lover low on self-esteem after 13 years out of the workplace. The show does a brilliant job of capturing that feeling of exclusion from the real world that often accompanies motherhood, and Byrne expertly walks the line between aspirational cool girl and relatably downtrodden housewife. Meanwhile, Will has his own struggles – namely to find love and get along with his colleagues at the bar they run, Lucky Penny, after they decide to collaborate with a cringy diner chain. Will quits in protest, believing the value of his beer to be inextricably linked to its non-corporate edge. Platonic seems curiously keen to disabuse him of his resistance to capitalist overlords; by the first season's end he is working at the chain's head office and engaged to the CEO, Jenna. This is where season two kicks off, with Sylvia organising the pair's wedding – she's now moonlighting as a party planner – while secretly hoping they will split. The pair do seem ill-matched – Will is a committed slacker, Jenna is an overachiever and yet quite basic (she slips lines from the Barbie movie into conversation). She's also dismissive of Sylvia in a way that plays neatly into the motherhood theme. Platonic ranges from great to decent company. The leads have palpable (nonsexual) chemistry, and it's always nice to watch something that is putting serious effort into making you laugh. Byrne is undoubtedly the comic engine, a natural clown who is given plenty to do; season two begins with Sylvia posing as an eastern European glamourpuss in order to test-drive a sports car which she repeatedly stalls before fleeing. Sometimes you can't help wondering if Platonic would work better if its most hilarious moments were smooshed together into a lean comic movie rather than padded out into a flabby, 10-hour-long TV series. Having worked through the tensions caused by an adult male-female relationship in season one, the show now asks whether Will and Sylvia should continue their mildly dysfunctional friendship. This question doesn't provide quite enough direction or dramatic substance: the storylines are circular, the bickering is repetitive and there's a distinct streaming-era bagginess to proceedings. Still, there remains a lot to enjoy here. Platonic season two is on Apple TV+.

Activision may be a bit too confident about the chances of Battlefield competing with Call of Duty, as the beta for Battlefield 6 begins. Battlefield 6 has been making a lot of positive headlines recently, with thousands of people queuing up to play this week's beta, days before it actually began. Naturally, none of this has gone unnoticed by Call Of Duty publisher Activision, who are now owned by Microsoft. They're never likely to comment on EA's would-be rival in public but a leak suggests that while Activision is watching events with interest, they're not worried. In fact, apparently the phrase that's going round the Activision boardroom is that Call Of Duty is 'too big to fail', which sounds like just the sort of overconfident bravado that often leads to disaster… The quote comes from Insider Gaming, which claims that Activision believes this year's Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 to be a 'strong' title, that doesn't leave the franchise particularly weak against Battlefield 6. Black Ops 7 has had a difficult development though, and it's unusual to have two games from the same sub-series released in consecutive years, since Black Ops 6 was out last year. Although little is known officially about Black Ops 7 at the moment, with a full reveal planned at Gamescom in two weeks' time, it does have a similar near future setting, even if the Call Of Duty games have never aimed for realism in the same way as Battlefield. The fact is though, EA has been trying to position Battlefield as a rival to Call Of Duty for decades and it's never really come close, with Call Of Duty, even in some of its leaner years, always outselling Battlefield by around 3:1 and often much more. EA's expectations for Battlefield 6 are reportedly quite unrealistic but they should be happy if the game can make any inroads against Call Of Duty. However, it will be very difficult to judge how well the two titles are doing in comparison to each other. Neither publisher is likely to reveal sales figures and Call Of Duty's availability on Game Pass will make even Steam user counts unreliable – although that, along with leaks, is likely to be the primary method. What will also be interesting is how Call Of Duty: Warzone compares against Battlefield's rumoured battle royale game. Although the game has been officially acknowledged by EA it's not been revealed in any detail and it's unclear if it will be out this year. More Trending Battlefield 6 will launch on October 10, while Black Ops 7's release date should be announced at Gamescom. If it's anything other than the usual late October or early November, then that might be the first indication that Activision are changing their plans in light of the increased rivalry. There are three Battlefield open beta periods in August, and the first started on Thursday, August 7 at 9am BST. That's only available if you have early access though and, unfortunately, if you don't have a code for the beta now then there's no obvious way to get one, unless someone happens to give you theirs or EA does a surprise drop via their X account. That first beta period will segue straight into the second, which runs from Saturday, August 9 to this Sunday. For that you can still try and find a streamer on Twitch that is giving away codes, if you watch them for at least an hour, or hope that EA gives away more via X. The third and find stage of the beta starts on August 14 and runs to August 17. That's likely to be the easiest one to get access to at this point and there'll be plenty of streamers on Twitch offering codes, as well as promotions from EA.
