Top leaders of the Opposition INDIA bloc held a virtual meeting on Saturday to decide what issues they should take up during the monsoon session of parliament. The meeting resembled a complaint session with many disagreements, sources said.

Communist Party of India leader D Raja indirectly objected to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's comment on the Left's ideology in Kerala and its comparison to the BJP's ideological mentor RSS. Mr Raja said senior leaders should be mindful of limits when criticising alliance partners.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray, NCP (SP) leader Sharad Pawar, and Ram Gopal Yadav demanded that such meetings be called regularly. The next meeting of the INDIA bloc could be in the first week of August, sources said.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah suggested raising the issue of full statehood for the Union Territory during the parliament session. The members agreed, and also decided to raise the issue of the Pahalgam terror attack.
Dipankar Bhattacharya demanded that the issue of the central government's anti-Maoist campaign and the Maoists' demand for a ceasefire be raised.
The Trinamool Congress's Abhishek Banerjee asked if the Pahalgam attack was an intelligence failure, then why did the Intelligence Bureau chief get an extension? "Pegasus is being used against the Opposition, instead of terrorists. The government is trying to bring the NRC through SIR. E-squared [ED and EC] have become puppets of the government," Mr Banerjee said.
The India bloc's 24 member parties attended the virtual meeting. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was absent, signalling a departure from the bloc's line of thinking and strategy.
The other key attendees included Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
After the meeting, Congress leader and Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha, Pramod Tiwari, said there was complete consensus about the concern over national security as it was being compromised in the BJP regime.
He said the INDIA bloc has expressed concerns over the repeated claims made by US President Donald Trump that he mediated the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. He said Mr Trump has so far made the claims 24 times, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi has kept quiet and not responded.
Mr Tiwari said INDIA bloc parties expressed their concern over SIR in Bihar. He said it was felt that there was an undeclared Emergency during which voters' names were being removed from the list.

Responding to media queries about the success of the recent Sadhana Samavesha, the Chief Minister said over two lakh people attended the public rally in Vijayanagara, demonstrating strong public support. 'BJP leaders only peddle lies, while they themselves are replicating our guarantee schemes across the country. Our government has already spent Rs52,000 crore to fulfill these guarantees,' he concluded.

Technical panel's report will guide dam safety works: DKS
Mysuru: DeputyChief Minister and Water Resources Minister DK Shivakumar on Sunday announced that the state government has constituted a technical committee to assess the safety of dams across Karnataka. Repair and development works will be taken up based on the committee's recommendations, he added. Speaking to reporters on Sunday near the Kabini reservoir after offering bagina, DCM Shivakumar observed that this was the first time in two years that the reservoir had filled up. 'After KRS, today we offered bagina at Kabini. This dam has supported us even in difficult times,' he said. He also confirmed that a proposal to expand the Kabini region had been put forth by local MLAs, and that the government had approved Rs35 crore worth of developmental works in the area. Additionally, a Rs88 crore micro-irrigation project DPR had been prepared and submitted. Referring to the Tungabhadra dam gate repairs, he stated that the incident prompted the formation of a technical committee to review the safety of all state dams. 'We will act on their findings as soon as the report is submitted,' he assured. When asked about the proposal for a Kabini Utsav and Kaveri Aarti, he said discussions would be held with district ministers and local leaders to promote tourism and employment through such events. On the stalled botanical garden project, he said that while private investment was welcome, the current priority remained optimal water use and dam safety. Regarding his sudden Delhi visit, Shivakumar clarified it was a private legal matter. 'I informed the Chief Minister, attended a brief meeting with lawyers, and returned the same night,' he explained. Reacting humorously to BJP's claim of disrespect towards him, he quipped, 'They always show me extra love because I'm stronger.'

BJP launches helpline for protecting small traders' interests
Bengaluru: The Karnataka unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, on Saturday, announced the launch of a helpline to safeguard the interests of small traders in the state in the backdrop of row over GST Addressing a press conference at the State BJP Office, Jagannath Bhavan, in Bengaluru, the Leader of the Opposition in Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, has said that the BJP will launch a helpline (8884245123) from July 21 to safeguard the interests of small traders in the state. He added that street vendors and small traders had been served notices by the state government, creating confusion and fear among poor traders in the state. He criticised the Congress-led state government for failing to provide solutions or clarify what constitutes taxable income. Narayanaswamy said that as per Central government's data available with the state, traders whose annual turnover exceeded Rs 40 lakh must register and pay GST. 'Service providers with turnover above Rs 20 lakh are also liable to pay GST. However, the notices sent by the state are not valid in many cases,' he alleged. 'Traders are not tax evaders or criminals. They do not understand the tax rules, and the state government has failed to educate them,' he said. He urged the state government to protect the interests of the poor traders rather than intimidate them. He said that according to Central government rules, GST is applicable only if the annual turnover exceeds Rs 1.5 crore at one per cent rate. 'For street vendors to fall under GST, they must have a permanent shop and address. There is an exemption for turnover up to Rs 40 lakh and issuing notices to traders with turnover above Rs 20 lakh has created confusion,' Narayanaswamy added. He also said that apps like Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay used for UPI transactions were being tracked, and funds received by traders directly into bank accounts were being used to send notices. 'But it's not being verified whether the turnover exceeding limits is due to actual business or loans and other types of transactions,' he clarified. According to G.S. Prashanth, State Convener of BJP'sEconomic Cell, items like flowers, fruits, vegetables, milk, meat, paneer, bangles, and many other products are exempted from GST. 'Even if someone does Rs 10 crore turnover in these exempted items, GST registration is not mandatory. Yet, notices have been sent to such traders by the state GST department,' he alleged. He added that according to GST laws, third-party data cannot be used to issue tax notices without verification. 'Information from Paytm, PhonePe, or Google Pay must be verified first. Officials must ascertain whether the trader's goods fall under GST before issuing notices. Unfortunately, none of this due process has been followed,' Prashanth claimed. He also said: 'The state GST department has done nothing to spread awareness among street vendors about the taxes. Nearly 90 per cent of traders fall under the jurisdiction of the state GST, and only 10 per cent under Central GST. Yet, without any outreach or information sharing, the state has spread fear among small traders.' Therefore, the 14,000 notices issued to traders by the state government are illegal and unconstitutional, he asserted. Those present at the press conference were Rajya Sabha MP Lehar Singh, Chikkaballapur district president S.V. Ramachandragowda (Seakal), BJP Medical Cell state convenor Dr. K. Narayan, BJP Economic Cell state convenor G.S. Prashanth, and former BJP state spokesperson G.V. Krishna. When asked about the state government's notices to small traders demanding tax payments, State BJP Preident B.Y. Vijayendra said, 'We discussed this yesterday with party leaders. The Siddaramaiah-led Congress government, which is struggling to mobilise funds for its guarantee schemes, is now intimidating street vendors by sending them tax notices.' 'While GST goes to the Centre, it is a fact that no other state in the country has seen such developments. But in Karnataka, the state government is unable to manage its finances for guarantees and development. So, under the Chief Minister's instructions, they are threatening traders andstreet vendors,' he added.
