'Sabke boss' mindset behind tariffs on India, says Rajnath

Time of India17 hours ago
RAISEN: The world sees "new India" as a strong, fast-growing economy whose ability to defeat its enemies with "homegrown strength" has become the envy of those who think "sabke boss toh hum hain", defence minister
Rajnath Singh
said Sunday, taking a veiled swipe at US President Donald Trump amid escalating tariff tensions.
"Many wonder how India is growing at such a fast pace. They are trying their best to ensure goods made in India, by Indians, are costlier than goods made in their countries," Singh said at the foundation ceremony of the Rs 1,800-crore BEML Rail Hub for Manufacturing in MP's Raisen.
"They feel this will ensure that when goods made in India become expensive, the world wouldn't buy them. They are putting in much effort to ensure this."
Singh predicted that attempts to browbeat India with additional tariffs wouldn't succeed, given how the country had positioned itself.
We don't provoke anyone, but those who provoke us won't be spared: Rajnath
India is progressing so fast that I could say with full confidence - no power in the world can now stop us from becoming a big power, Rajnath Singh said.
Singh said that despite the naysayers,
Operation Sindoor
was proof that India possessed the capabilities to show its enemies their place without depending on anybody.

He termed the operation "a befitting reply to the heinous and cowardly terrorist attack in Pahalgam" and a loud and clear message that India no longer tolerates an attack on its integrity and sovereignty. "We don't provoke anyone, but those who provoke us will not be spared," he added.
The defence minister said the country's armed forces effectively utilising indigenous equipment was crucial to the success of Operation Sindoor.
"India was able to reach this position only because it has taken the pledge to become atmanirbhar in the defence sector."
Crediting PM Narendra Modi for the transformation, Rajnath Singh said India wasn't just manufacturing defence equipment for its own use, but also catering to the security needs of friendly countries.
"Our defence production and export are increasing at an unprecedented pace, touching record figures. This is the new defence sector of new India."
Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and MP chief minister Mohan Yadav were also at the event.

India-Pakistan Diplomatic Spat: Gas, Water Cut For Indian Diplomats In Islamabad Amid Retaliation

In the wake of India's "Operation Sindoor," a retaliatory cross-border military operation against terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, sources have revealed that Pakistan has stepped up efforts to harass Indian diplomats and officials in Islamabad, including reportedly disconnecting basic utility supplies and suspendingnewspaper delivery. "Operation Sindoor," initiated in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack, involved nine terrorist hideouts of the Indian Army being bombed, killing more than 100 terrorists according to reports. Subsequent to this operation, India accused Pakistani authorities of a series of moves by Pakistani authorities that contravene the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Sources say that the distribution of newspapers to the Indian High Commission in Islamabad and Indian diplomats' homes has been suspended. In retort, India has suspended the supply of newspapers to Pakistani diplomats in New Delhi as well. In addition, there have been reports of alleged surveillance and unauthorised access to Indian diplomats' homes and offices in Islamabad, actions which are a direct violation of international diplomatic norms guaranteeing security and respect for the person of diplomatic staff. These actions are interpreted by Indian authorities as an attempt at intimidating diplomatic personnel. Indian diplomats are also said to be suffering great hardship in getting access to even basic amenities like gas and water. Local shopkeepers, who had earlier supplied packaged drinking water and gas cylinders to the Indian High Commission, are now afraid or refusing supplies outright, allegedly on orders from Pakistani officials. A source in Islamabad informed Aaj Tak that although Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) has a pipeline attached to the Indian High Commission building, gas supply through it has been cut off deliberately. The Indian diplomats and their family members are compelled to buy high-cost gas cylinders from the open market, normally with procurement problems, despite having to pay more. Indian officials have termed the newspaper delivery ban as a "deliberate conspiracy by Pakistan's intelligence agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), to keep Indian diplomats isolated from normal access to print media, restrict their awareness of local developments, and render their living and working conditions in Islamabad unpleasant." Sources also pointed to a precedent for this behavior, remembering the same kind of harassment Indian diplomats had encountered in Islamabad in 2019 after the Indian Army's surgical strikes in retaliation for the Pulwama terrorist attack.

After CISF, now 4,000 more troopers sanctioned for BSF

NEW DELHI: After the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), now it is the turn for the Border Security Force (BSF) to get a cadre boost. The government has cleared a proposal to create nearly 4,000 additional new Group 'B' and 'C' General Duty (GD) posts in the force. Sources on Monday said that the government's approval for the long-pending move was seen as the recognition of the BSF's expanding and critical role in ensuring national security, particularly after 'Operation Sindoor'. Confirming the move, the sources said, a proposal in this regard has been cleared by the Ministry of Finance's expenditure department, as this would lead to a net addition of nearly 4,000 posts, with a strong focus on increasing supervisory strength and opening up promotion avenues for existing personnel. Notably, however, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had asked for around 15,000 posts, out of which the Ministry of Finance agreed to only 4,000, the sources said.

State cooperative election authorities suggest the use of EVMs in cooperative society elections

The State Cooperative Election Authorities have suggested the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) in cooperative elections, the Union Ministry of Cooperation said in a statement on Monday (August 11, 2025). The Cooperative Election Authority held its first consultative meeting with the State Cooperative Election Authorities (SCEA) on Monday (August 11, 2025) to develop a mechanism to conduct elections in the sector in a free and fair manner. The meeting was chaired by Devendra Kumar Singh, Chairperson, Cooperative Election Authority, and attended by State Cooperative Election Commissioners from Odisha, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Maharashtra. 'The Cooperative Election Authority has so far conducted 159 elections since March 2024 and is in the process of conducting 69 more elections,' Mr. Singh said. The Cooperative Election Authority was notified on March 11, 2024, in exercise of the Union government's powers conferred by Section 45 of the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act of 2002, and its amendment of 2023. 'The election process in cooperative societies need to be streamlined to foster transparency,' Mr. Singh said. 'There is a need for standard manuals and codes of conduct for cooperative elections,' members of the State Cooperative Election Authorities said. The discussion included matters relating to the framing of the Code of Conduct for contesting candidates, and for Multi-State Cooperative Societies; fixing the upper limit of expenditure for contesting candidates; publication of a handbook for Returning Officers; election of delegates from member cooperative societies, who are members in national cooperative societies; and other agendas received from States. One of the agenda items proposed by participating State Cooperative Election Authorities included the introduction of Electronic Voting Machines in cooperative elections, the Cooperation Ministry said.
