Attacq Foundation launches Building Brilliance, Block by Block to renovate classrooms at Phuthumani Primary School

Waterfall City-based Attacq Foundation is proud to announce the launch of its latest initiative, Building Brilliance, Block by Block, a classroom renovation campaign that aims to transform learning conditions for more than 400 learners at Phuthumani Primary School in Tembisa.
Guided by its overarching vision to transform and help the communities in which they operate by investing in education, training, essential goods, and economic development, the foundation is not just funding brick-and-mortar upgrades, it is laying the groundwork for a more inclusive, educated, and prosperous South Africa.
Attacq Foundation spokesperson Danny Vermeulen said bright minds deserved bright spaces. 'By renovating classrooms, we're enabling learners to thrive and communities to grow. It's more than just infrastructure.'

Attacq invites the private sector and broader public to co-invest and build with them in a project that delivers lasting impact. Through structured sponsorship tiers, contributors will be part of a powerful transformation, block by block.
'This campaign directly aligns with Attacq's strategic pillar of thriving communities. We are not just donors, we are co-creators of sustainable change. When a school is strengthened, the entire community is empowered to thrive.'
In March this year, the Department of Basic Education reported to the National Council of Provinces that South Africa faced a staggering infrastructure backlog in public schools; these deficits posed daily risks to learners. It was said that more than 8 200 schools required additional classrooms. Vermeulen said this reality underscored why the campaign was so vital.

'It is about restoring dignity, enabling opportunity, and constructing environments where learners can flourish. Building our nation is about giving to the community and being responsible for making a sustainable difference.
'This is more than a renovation project. It is a shared call to reimagine what education can look like when purpose and partnership intersect. We invite businesses with a vision for impact to become building partners, co-creators of environments. Your investment isn't just a donation, it's a commitment to the future of education. By laying the foundation with us, you support not only academic excellence but also community upliftment and social progress.'

Local church donates school uniforms

Learners from N'wa-Vangani Primary School in Mamelodi East have been showered with school uniforms to keep warm this winter. The generous donation was made by the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in SA, Mamelodi East Parish, to more than 50 learners on Friday. Reverend Thembani Mayayise from the church said the learners received school uniforms, including belts for the school boys. Mayayisa said the donations are part of the church community social investment project, together with their partners, Genesis Corporate Solutions. The church project is not only aimed at schools but is for the church and the community at large. 'We are grateful for the school to allow us to contribute towards the well-being of the learners at the school,' he said. 'We brought jerseys, trousers, shirts, shoes and belts for the learners who desperately need these school uniforms to keep warm in winter. 'We have partnered with Genesis to co-operate with helping to buy the school uniforms,' said Mayayisa. He said this is not a once-off donation and they are planning to come back next year to do more for the school, especially in winter. Learners were encouraged to take their schoolwork seriously and strive to perform exceptionally well in their studies. Matimu Mandlhazi from Genesis Corporate Solutions said, 'We believe in empowering young children and also making an impact in the educational sector. 'We have decided to partner with the church with a contribution of R30 000.' Mandlhazi said they are looking forward to seeing the project grow from strength to strength, and they wish to do more in future for the school. A member of the school governing body at N'wa-Vangani Primary School, Millicent Maluleka, thanked the church and its partners for the generous donations. Maluleka said the donations of school uniforms came just at the right time. She said giving is a good sign of love and also teaches their learners to give. 'We have learners who come from disadvantaged families, and these donations will uplift the spirit of learners,' said Maluleka. She added that the generous donations will also help them improve their school work. Do you have more information about the story? Please send us an email to bennittb@ or phone us on 083 625 4114. Search for missing aircraft ends in tragedy

The search for a missing aircraft has ended in tragedy after it was recovered, and the three people aboard found dead. According to reports, the aircraft departed Virginia Airport north of Durban at around 3pm on Sunday but failed to reach its alternate destination. It was last tracked flying over Ladysmith, heading south towards either Pietermaritzburg or Greytown. The KZN Department of Transport said an investigation is under way to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the accident. 'The Aeronautical Rescue Co-ordination Centre (ARCC) informed us that they will be handing over the matter to the SAPS Accident and Incident Investigation Division and the South African Civil Aviation Authority for the official investigation,' said Transport MEC Siboniso Duma. 'We express our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. 'In particular, we are in touch with Zama Biyela, mother of the late student pilot Nqobile Biyela. 'This is the most difficult period for her and the entire family. 'Losing such a young, great leader with a promising career in the aviation industry, under such circumstances, is not only tragic but devastating,' said Duma. He also commended rescue teams for their display of efficiency throughout the operation. Don't have the ZO app? Missing plane update: Crash site located, no survivors

The missing plane has been located. Bad weather hampered search & rescue efforts over the entire search area for the missing plane that crashed sometime last night (June 8). The crash site, between Ladysmith and Pietermaritzburg near uMshwathi Municipality, has been found and we are given to understand that there were no survivors. SAPS Search & Rescue are on scene. The plane – a Piper Cherokee that was part of a training flight from Virginia Airfield in Durban involving three aircraft – went missing after aborting an attempted landing to refuel at Ladysmith Airfield in KZN. It is believed that the plane turned back to either make a landing in Greytown or Pietermaritzburg. All contact was lost with the plane shortly afterwards. A second plane, which also failed to land, crash-landed near Greytown. Fortunately, no one was injured. The third plane (which was the lead plane) successfully landed in Ladysmith, refueled and continued to Pretoria. The planes had intended to stop over in Ladysmith to refuel before continuing on to Pretoria.
