Asean–Canada trade pact, Indo-Pacific strategy to drive sustainable growth, says Wisma Putra

KUALA LUMPUR: The synergy between the Asean–Canada Free Trade Agreement (ACAFTA) and Canada's Indo-Pacific Strategy has emerged as a significant catalyst for sustainable growth, regulatory alignment, and inclusive economic resilience.
Wisma Putra said Asean Foreign Ministers welcomed the positive momentum in ACAFTA negotiations, recognising its potential to deepen cooperation in emerging sectors such as digital trade, artificial intelligence, green technology and clean energy.
This followed the Asean Post-Ministerial Conference with Canada, co-chaired by Laos Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane, in his capacity as Country Coordinator for Asean–Canada Dialogue Relations, and Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand.
The statement said that Canada's longstanding support for Asean's sustainability agenda was acknowledged, particularly in areas such as climate change, innovation and disaster management.
"Ministers underscored the importance of investing in future generations, citing the success of Canada's Scholarship and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED) programme," it said.
The meeting also highlighted Canada's technical capabilities in energy transition and quantum technologies, with ministers expressing interest in strengthening collaboration through the Asean Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC).
They also looked forward to the adoption of the Asean–Canada Plan of Action (2026–2030) as a timely opportunity to chart a more ambitious course for future cooperation.
Asean also expressed appreciation for Canada's enduring partnership and constructive engagement over the years.
"The meeting reaffirmed both sides' commitment to advancing a forward-looking, inclusive agenda centred on peace, sustainability, and shared prosperity.
"As the region confronts increasingly complex challenges, Asean and Canada remain united in their pursuit of resilient, rules-based cooperation grounded in mutual respect and common purpose," the statement added.
On regional and international developments, Malaysia reiterated its deep concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and called for an immediate ceasefire.
The statement added that Malaysia emphasised the importance of upholding a fair and rules-based international order, grounded in international law and United Nations resolutions.
"Malaysia called on all parties to exercise restraint and stressed the need for a balanced, constructive approach in pursuit of lasting peace in the Middle East," it said.
The meeting is part of the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting and related sessions, ahead of Malaysia's 2025 Asean Chairmanship, themed 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', which will feature 24 ministerial-level meetings, including engagements with Asean Dialogue and Sectoral Dialogue Partners.

Iran president rejects Israeli PM's call for uprising amid shortages

TEHRAN: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has sharply criticised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's call for Iranians to revolt against their government during ongoing power and water shortages. Netanyahu's video message on Tuesday urged Iranians to 'take risks for freedom' and demand accountability from Tehran while offering Israeli water expertise to address shortages. 'The regime that deprived the people of Gaza of water and food wants to bring water to the people of Iran? What a mirage!' Pezeshkian responded on social media platform X. The exchange follows a 12-day conflict between the two nations two months ago, marked by Israel's unprecedented strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites as well as civilian areas. United Nations agencies have warned of famine in Gaza, where Israel has restricted aid shipments amid its ongoing war with Hamas since October 2023. Netanyahu has previously released similar videos targeting Iranian citizens during periods of domestic unrest in Iran. – AFP

The Sarawak Premier said this commitment was signified by the 24th Asean-China senior officials' meeting on the implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (SOM-DOC), taking place here from Aug 11 to 14. "We are deeply honoured to host this important meeting here in Kuching. "The Sarawak government is proud to be part of Malaysia's chairmanship of Asean in 2025 and will always be firmly committed to advancing our nation's efforts," he said at a state gala dinner in conjunction with the meeting on Wednesday (Aug 13) night. Abang Johari said Asean member states shared a responsibility to ensure that the South China Sea remains a place of peace and prosperity. In this regard, he said, history had recorded the significance of the non-alignment policy emerging from the Bandung Conference in 1955, which led to the concept of Zopfan (Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality). "I believe the spirit of Zopfan is still prevailing and present in Asean," he added. Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin said Kuching was a significant venue for the SOM-DOC as Sarawak faced the South China Sea and was a neighbour to several Asean member states. Amran said the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea was adopted by Asean and China in 2002, while negotiations on the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea (COC) began in 2018. He said these efforts reaffirmed both parties' commitment to respect international law, build trust and confidence among partners, resolve disputes by peaceful means and exercise self-restraint. He added that the Code of Conduct would be a set of rules governing relations and cooperation with regard to the South China Sea. "All these stem from our collective need to promote a peaceful, friendly and harmonious environment in the South China Sea for the better enhancement of peace, stability, economic growth and prosperity in our region and beyond. "Therefore, we senior officials and delegates from Asean and China convened in Kuching this week to continue our work towards full implementation of the DOC and to move forward the negotiations towards the finalisation of the COC," Amran said.
