Star-led festival to honor Michael Jackson and Jackson family in Gary. Brothers attending
The City of Gary will host the "2300 Jackson Street Block Party" August 29-30, honoring the Jackson family, including Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson and the Jackson 5.
Comedian and actor Chris Tucker and Grammy-winning Gary native Deniece Williams will host, while DJ Kid Capri performs at the free event that will feature food trucks, vendors and a kids play zone.
The festivities will take place from noon to 7 p.m. each day.
The August 29 celebration will focus on Michael Jackson on his birthday. On August 30, the entire Jackson family will be honored.
Though named for the childhood home of the nine musical children of Joe and Katherine Jackson, the Jacksons block party will take place at Roosevelt High School, 730 W. 25th Ave.
The now-closed school is where, in 1966, the Jackson 5 won its first talent show.
Jackie and Marlon Jackson will be honored guests at the event.

Brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael Jackson formed the Jackson 5 in Gary and had four consecutive number-one Billboard Hot 100 hits from their 1969 Motown debut album ("I Want You Back," "ABC," "The Love You Save," "I'll Be There").
After Jermaine left the group in 1976, their youngest brother, Randy, stepped in, and the band was renamed the Jacksons ("Blame It on the Boogie," "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)").
The Jackson 5 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Michael Jackson, who died in 2009, was inducted as a solo artist in 2001, and their sister Janet Jackson was inducted in 2019.
Sisters Rebbie and La Toya also recorded albums that yielded hit singles.

Like many other fans, they ended up standing in a long line in the heat. "We're both from the Midwest, so the humidity is a little extra than what we're used to. I figured staying hydrated would be a good plan,' said Bridget Ryan. "I think it was a come hell or high water kind of situation. Whatever the weather was going to do we were going to show." Their determination didn't stop there. "We even talked about if we don't get any today after sitting outside maybe we'll come back tomorrow and try the truck again,' Meghan Ryan said. The H-Town stop comes after Beyoncé wrapped the international leg of her tour – first with a six-night stint in London, followed by three dazzling nights in Paris. Cardi rocked the stage at Drais' Beachclub nearly two years ago and she had the crowd going wild… a little too wild. She was hotter than the Vegas sun as she rapped the breakout hit, 'Bodak Yellow.' As BOSSIP previously reported, when the Am I The Drama? diva approached the crowd, a woman in the audience decided to cool her off with a cup of water. The anonymous woman wasn't the only one. Earlier in the show, the 'W.A.P.' rapper asked fans to help her beat the triple-digit heat by splashing her onstage. Cardi continued to perform, and several songs later, the anonymous woman decided to keep the cold water flowing. Once the drink hit Cardi's face, she hurled her microphone back into the crowd in a split-second reaction. The unnamed woman claims the microphone hit her and now she's suing for assault, battery, and negligence. She also claimed that the charity auction of the mic, which sold for $99,000, 'exacerbated [her] emotional distress,' TMZ reports. After the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department investigated the incident, they declined to charge the Grammy winner in August 2023. According to Complex, the police report didn't come from the drink thrower, but another woman accidentally hit when the airborne audio equipment ricocheted off the alleged drink thrower. When Charlamagne asked if Cardi regretted taking aim at one of her fans, she said, 'It was really like a quick reaction.' During one part of the set, she welcomed some waterworks because 'the Vegas heat ain't no joke,' but those fans understood the assignment. 'It was hotter than a motherf**ker! So, there was a part of the show that I told people, 'Splash me!' But even then I told them, 'Be careful with the face because the face is beat, b***h!'' she explained. When the moment passed, Cardi expected the rest of the show to go as planned. However, she said the anonymous women tried to get in on the action 'four songs' or about '15 to 20 minutes' after she was over the splashing. She noted that the woman 'threw water and ice on my face!' At that point, Cardi said she just 'automatically reacted' and didn't 'even know that I was throwing it.' The 'Enough' star clarified that the ice shocked her, but the reaction came from the drink hitting her in the face. She asked how ten other people could splash only her body, but this one attendee got her directly in the face, against her wishes. When Cardi reviewed the video, she said it confirmed to her that the woman 'intended to throw that s**t in my face.' Welp, Cardi claimed it was a reflex in self-defense. And her attorney calls this latest lawsuit a money grab. 'The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the Clark County District Attorney's Office closed this matter for insufficient evidence a long time ago, but apparently the opportunity to try to make money off of a celebrity was too much for some willing law firm to pass up,' attorney Drew Findling said. Billy Joel Slams Rumors He Has Had DUIs: 'That Never Happened'
The musician addressed talk about his driving record in his revealing new documentary 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes' Billy Joel is putting an end to unsubstantiated DUI rumors. The five-time Grammy winner, 76, addressed some of the "gossip" and "rumors" that come along with fame in his new two-part HBO documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes — specifically, the longstanding rumor that he was charged with DUIs during a brief period away from the spotlight. "I didn't like the tabloid kind of press. For example, there's this rumor that I have all these DUIs," Joel said in the documentary. "That never happened." "But people keep repeating the myth. 'Oh, he's got so many DUIs.' I never had a DUI. So f--- you," he added. "The press can be mean. So having that much attention paid to you is not easy." In the documentary, which is now streaming, Joel detailed his experience stepping out of the spotlight in the mid-2000s. "At that time in his life, he was drinking a lot and over the years, he had sort of a series of calamities," The New Yorker staff writer Nick Paumgarten said in the documentary. "He was making a mess of it in public, and when that happens, the public chorus can turn on you." Around that time, the "Piano Man" singer was indeed involved in a series of car accidents. He crashed a 1999 Mercedes-Benz in June 2002, drove his 2002 Mercedes-Benz into a tree in Sag Harbor in January 2003 before being treated overnight for head injuries, and later lost control of his 1967 Citroen in Bayville in April 2004 and crashed into an unoccupied house. That final accident left him with a cut to his finger and minor damage to the car, per the doc. In an interview with The New York Times Magazine in 2013, Joel clarified that his accidents had "nothing to do with the booze" and more to do with a "mental fog." "I never had a DUI in my life. That's another fallacy. Look at the police records," he said. "My mind wasn't right. I wasn't focused. I went into a deep, deep depression after 9/11. 9/11 just knocked the wind out of me, and I don't know even now if I've recovered from it. It really, really hurt that man could do that to man. And then there was a breakup with somebody, and it took me a while to get me back on my feet again." As Joel told PEOPLE in this week's cover story, the new project following his life doesn't just dispel some rumors, it also depicts "some of the stupid stuff I did, that's painful to talk about." Directed by Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin, And So it Goes offers insight into how Joel overcame substance abuse, mental health struggles and more on his journey toward happiness with his wife, Alexisand his three daughters. 'My goal was to get it over with,' Joel said of his initial involvement in the film. 'When I do interviews, people just ask you about yourself and you get a little self-conscious about it eventually. It's almost embarrassing. When you're talking about your personal life detached from the material… I suppose there's a little bit of wariness involved.' The film features insight from Joel's sister Judy, daughter Alexa Ray, 39, and longtime friends including lighting designer Steve Cohen and booking agent Dennis Arfa. As Cohen told PEOPLE, there's "a work ethic through line in Billy's life." 'You make mistakes. He always said to me, 'You show up. You do the best you can. You admit when you're wrong and you let other people tell you how good you are. You don't tell yourself how good you are,'" Cohen recalled. "I hope fans walk away realizing how f---ing human he is, and I hope they come back listening to these songs again with a deeper affection," Cohen added. "I hope that you walk away from this thing going, 'I now justify my fandom. I know why this guy is as good and why I respond to it, because that's the kind of guy I can relate to his life.
