Captain Marvel: Shreyas Iyer one win away from his moment in the sun

"I felt I didn't receive the recognition I deserved after winning the IPL, but at the end of the day, as long as you have self-integrity and you continue doing the right things when no one is watching, that's what truly matters – and that's what I kept doing," Shreyas Iyer said, reflecting on why he chose to leave KKR despite leading the side to an IPL wasn't a quote made for the cameras. It was a sentence soaked in silence — the kind that lingers after the lights have dimmed and the applause has faded. Iyer wasn't just talking about cricket; he was speaking about what it feels like to be invisible in plain Kolkata Knight Riders captain, he barely put a foot wrong during their 2024 IPL-winning campaign, but the presence of Gautam Gambhir, Chandrakant Pandit and Abhishek Nayar in the dugout meant Shreyas's leadership was often overshadowed. And yet, by leading Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title against Madhya Pradesh on Sunday, he proved there's more to his captaincy than merely executing instructions from the Read: IPL 2025 final preview, RCB vs PBKS: 17-year wait, 18th attempt, one dreamadvertisementA few months later, Shreyas Iyer became Punjab Kings' 17th captain — yes, seventeenth. If that doesn't tell you everything about the franchise's identity crisis, nothing after years of chopping and changing, of false dawns and fleeting hopes, with one win away from their maiden title, PBKS finally found their Sarpanch — a leader the fans worship, the coach trusts, and the owners can't stop smiling leader that CSK has always had in MS Dhoni, MI have in Rohit Sharma and RCB in Virat Punjab Kings fans are going gaga over Shreyas. A clip from the podcast The Boundary Boys, where the host promises Shreyas Iyer 100 acres of land, a 10-acre mansion, and even a Canadian bride — all on one condition: lead Punjab Kings to their maiden IPL THE MAN WITH THE MIDAS TOUCH Shreyas Iyer is currently the sixth highest run-scorer in IPL 2025. Courtesy: AP Cricket rarely offers fairy tales, but it often rewards persistence. Shreyas Iyer, once a mainstay in the Indian team, was overlooked for a central contract in 2024 after missing early-season domestic matches – a requirement set by the BCCI. He had withdrawn from a Ranji Trophy match in February 2024 due to injury concerns, prompting disciplinary response? returned to domestic cricket and played a pivotal role in Mumbai's successful run — lifting the Ranji Trophy, the Irani Cup, and the Syed Mushtaq Ali then made his way back into India's ODI side for the England series and carried that momentum into the title-winning Champions Trophy campaign, where he emerged as India's leading scorer with 243 runs in five matches, including two three months later, well past midnight on June 2, Shreyas Iyer played a gladiator's knock to seal Punjab Kings' spot in the final. With this, he became only the second captain — after MS Dhoni — to take more than one franchise to the IPL final. More remarkably, he's the only one to lead three different teams to the final in successive PONTING CONNECTION Shreyas Iyer has flourished with Ricky Ponting as coach. Courtesy: PTI Shreyas Iyer's stock soared to Rs 26.75 crore — the second-highest IPL auction bid in history — as Punjab's dogged pursuit finally succeeded. It took the vision and persistence of newly appointed head coach Ricky Ponting to secure Shreyas Iyer and steer PBKS to their first final since 2014."I was pretty keen to work with him again," Ponting said. "It was obvious how much I valued him – we had a great working relationship at Delhi and even made the final in 2020 under his captaincy. He's a quality person. When you're trying to build a winning culture, you need people like that."Since his recall into the Indian ODI side in February, Shreyas has made it a habit to deliver match-winning and impactful innings across formats. In IPL 2025, as Punjab's captain, he has led from the front. After losing the Qualifier 1, Shreyas said his team had lost the battle and not the war. And boy, he batted like a true champion in the very next game against Mumbai Indians, battling the Jasprit Bumrah-led bowling attack to score match-winning 87: probably one of his finest innings of his IPL ANCHOR TO ENFORCERLast year at KKR, Shreyas often played second fiddle. At Punjab, he's had to carry more responsibility — as their designated enforcer in a line-up without high-profile overseas match one, Ponting spoke about witnessing a new version of Shreyas: confident, assertive, and numbers back it up. For the first time, Iyer has crossed 600 runs in an IPL season. Most tellingly, his strike rate — 175.80 — is far above his career T20 average of 133.40. Having struck just 30 sixes across his last three seasons, he's smashed 39 this year last year, Shreyas has won every major trophy he's chased — IPL 2024 with KKR, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with Mumbai, and the ICC Champions Trophy with SHREYAS IYER INDIA CAPTAINCY MATERIAL? Shreyas Iyer has led three different teams to IPL finals. Courtesy: AP Taking the reins as Punjab Kings' captain in IPL 2025, Shreyas has transformed the side into a force to reckon with. His astute leadership and match-winning performances have instilled a winning mentality in a squad long starved of his success with Punjab Kings has reignited conversations around his suitability for India's you, Shreyas is not currently part of India's Test or T20I squads. He wasn't picked for the upcoming England series, nor did he feature in the last T20I he was India's MVP in the Champions Trophy — where the team, led by Rohit Sharma, remained strategic nous in IPL 2025, especially with PBKS, has been key to their first playoff appearance in over a decade.'I've said this time and again and I'll say it AGAIN!! Iyer will captain India in multiple formats!! He has to!! He's that good,' wrote Robin Uthappa on Gavaskar, too, feels Iyer didn't get due credit for KKR's title win in 2024 — possibly hinting at Gambhir's dominant presence."All the plaudits were given to someone else. It's the captain who influences what happens on the pitch, not someone sitting in the dugout,' Gavaskar said on Star Sports. 'This year he's getting the credit. No one's giving it all to Ponting."RCB VS PBKS – LEGACY ON THE LINERCB and PBKS have never won an IPL title, despite being part of the league since its inception. Alongside Delhi Capitals, they form what social media cheekily calls the 'Holy Trinity' — franchises with loyal fanbases who've learnt to wear heartbreak with humour and a sense of shared Shreyas Iyer — 603 runs this season — a second consecutive IPL final tells its own story. He is now the only player in tournament history to lead three different teams to the it's not just perseverance that defines him — it's hunger. The same hunger that burned when he first walked into the PBKS dressing room still fuels him today, fiercer than ever, ahead of the biggest match of the loud. IPL 2025 Final, RCB vs PBKS: Mood in Ahmedabad completely dry ahead of title clash

The mood in Ahmedabad is 'dry' ahead of the title decider (Image courtesy - Pratyush Raj of in Ahmedabad : Outside the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, there are big cutouts of two captains Shreyas Iyer and Rajat Patidar. The handful of fans hoping to see Virat Kohli were perplexed to see the image of Rajat Patidar. "Who is he?," asked one of the fans outside Gate No. 1. The vendor, who was busy selling jerseys, replied angrily, "he is the captain of the team whose jersey you are buying." The poor guy had no clue about Rajat Patidar, and murmured, "wasn't Kohli the captain?" Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The vendors aren't particularly fans of the sport but they have a lot of hopes riding on the proceedings and the outcomes. "There isn't a buzz this time around. We failed to sell Rohit Sharma's jersey ahead of Qualifier 2, and now we are struggling to find buyers for Kohli's. We don't care who wins as long as we are selling jerseys. Hopefully, we will have more sales on Tuesday," said Krupal, before he started chanting the rates of the jerseys. IPL 2025 Final, RCB vs Punjab Kings: The wait will finally end in Ahmedabad Like Krupal, Mohammed Aslam sells wristbands, caps, and flags. Aslam jogs down memory lane and reminisced about the IPL 2023 final match between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings. RCB PBKS Too close to call it Krupal and Aslam are not wrong about the mood ahead of the final. On Sunday, hardly 50,000 people turned up to watch the Qualifier 2 match between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians. There were no buyers for many of the hospitality boxes as they were empty. The IPL final, which was shifted to the world's biggest stadium in Ahmedabad, has failed to create any buzz in the city. Hyderabad and Kolkata were supposed to host the playoffs as per the original dates but the venues were changed citing "weather conditions." The rain, however, has continued to follow the business end of the cash-rich league as there was a heavy shower ahead of Qualifier 2 and a light spell is expected on Tuesday as well. Even if the weather permits and the match goes ahead, it would be interesting to see whether the title clash will be able to fill the Narendra Modi Stadium. In the pre-match press conference, both captains chose to keep cards close to their chests. Shreyas Iyer spoke about lack of sleep while a soft-spoken and very un-RCB-like captain Rajat Patidar reserved praise for the fans and vowed not to get bogged down by the unreal expectation. The PBKS players, tired from their rain-affected marathon match, didn't turn up for the training session. Captain Shreyas left the venue after the photo shoot but RCB did train for around two hours. IPL 2025 Winner Prediction: What Greenstone Lobo's Astrology says Once RCB left the ground, the pitch and the inner ring were immediately covered, and final touches were applied to the makeshift stage for the closing ceremony. India's leading musician Shankar Mahadevan, accompanied by his sons Siddharth and Shivam, will deliver a special performance in a tribute to India's armed forces. Who's that IPL player? 'See you at the FINAL tomorrow ❤️ What an honour this is!!!' Shivam Mahadevan shared his excitement on Instagram. Buzz or no buzz, one thing is for sure: there will be a new IPL champion. Between Bengaluru and Punjab, the wait of one franchise will end.

Reuters The Indian Premier League is set to crown a first-time champion on Tuesday with Royal Challengers Bengaluru facing Punjab Kings in the final of the 18th season in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. on the points table at the end of the league stage to earn two shots at reaching the final. Bengaluru gained direct entry with a after bundling the Shreyas Iyer-led side out for just 101 in Mullanpur. PBKS, however, bounced back with a five-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians , the team that had defeated Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator, to enter the final for just the second time in 18 seasons, and for the first time in 11 years. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Records and milestones that could be broken/achieved in IPL 2025 final And ahead of Tuesday's showdown at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium , where Iyer had dished out a magnificent 87 not out on Sunday to propel his team into the final, we take a look at some of the records that could be broken and individual and team milestones that could be achieved: — The IPL is set to witness a first-time winner on Tuesday as neither RCB nor PBKS have lifted the trophy in the past. Punjab had lost to Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014 while RCB lost to Deccan Chargers (2009), Chennai Super Kings (2011) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (2016) in past finals. — The winning team will also break the record for the longest wait for a maiden title, which currently belongs to MI, who won their maiden title in their sixth season in 2013. KKR achieved the feat in their fifth attempt while SRH and CSK took four and three seasons respectively. Rajasthan Royals and GT had won the title on debut in 2008 and 2022 respectively. — PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer could become the first player in IPL history to win the title with two different teams. And what will make the victory even more incredible for the Mumbaikar will be the fact that he will achieve it in back-to-back seasons, having led KKR to their third title last year only to get released ahead of the mega auction. — Kohli needs another 86 runs to finish with 700-plus runs for the second consecutive season and for the third time overall. He had won the 'Orange Cap' in each time he went past the milestone – 973 runs in 2016 and 741 last year – but will need another 146 runs to surpass GT opener Sai Sudharsan, who currently is in the lead with 759 runs. PBKS captain Shreyas has already registered his best performance ever in an IPL season with 603 runs, but like Kohli, is a long way off from the 'Orange Cap'. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Royal Challengers Bengaluru pacer Josh Hazlewood needs to collect at least four wickets in the IPL final against Punjab Kings to become only the second Australian to win the 'Purple Cap'. Reuters — RCB pacer Josh Hazlewood needs to collect at least four wickets to finish with the 'Purple Cap' as the highest wicket-taker and become only the second Australian to win the award. A four-fer will allow the pacer to finish level with GT seamer Prasidh Krishna's current tally of 25 wickets, after which their economy rates will decide the winner of the award. PBKS' Arshdeep Singh, on the other hand, needs to collect seven or more wickets to win the award.
