Tigers turn to Jack Flaherty in decisive game vs. Twins

Reutersa day ago
August 6 - The Detroit Tigers added two starting pitchers, Chris Paddack and Charlie Morton, last week prior to the trade deadline. Getting consistently strong outings out of veteran right-hander Jack Flaherty is just as important.
Flaherty, who will start the finale of a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday afternoon, was signed as a free agent during the offseason to be the team's No. 2 starter behind ace Tarik Skubal.
Flaherty posted a 7-5 record and 2.95 ERA in 18 starts with the Tigers last season before he was dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the trade deadline. His second stint in Detroit hasn't gone as smoothly.
Following a three-inning outing at Pittsburgh on July 21 when he gave up three runs, six hits and three walks, Flaherty had a 5-10 record and a 4.77 ERA.
His latest two starts have eased concerns about his effectiveness. He held the American League East-leading Toronto Blue Jays scoreless for six innings on July 27, then limited the powerful Philadelphia lineup to one run and two hits in six-plus innings on Friday. The Tigers scored three early runs, but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead as the Phillies rallied for a 5-4 victory.
Flaherty (6-10, 4.36 ERA) has improved his fastball location in his past two outings while mixing in sliders and knuckle-curves.
"Flaherty was really good," manager A.J. Hinch said following the Friday contest. "He was in complete control of the game and really did a nice job of setting us up for the win."
Flaherty has made three career starts against Minnesota, winding up with no-decisions while posting a 3.00 ERA.
At the beginning of the series, the Twins listed Simeon Woods Richardson as their Wednesday starter. However, Minnesota placed him on the 15-day injured list on Monday due to a lingering illness.
"Sim has been dealing with a stomach issue," manager Rocco Baldelli said. "It's something that had him getting looked at by the docs numerous times over the last week. He's been struggling, and (it's) pushing him to the point where he's not able to get his baseball activity done. It's been a tough one. It's been a challenging one."
The Twins did not announce a replacement starter for Wednesday, and they likely will have to go deep into their revamped bullpen to get through the game. They traded five relievers last week, and Baldelli is trying to sort out how to utilize the replacements.
"Certainly a different setup," he said. "But this is what we're doing here: We're trying to learn what everyone can do. We're trying to challenge guys, put them in spots."
The bullpen pitched well enough on Tuesday as the Twins collected a 6-3 victory. Baldelli used four relievers after Zebby Matthews pitched just long enough to pick up the victory. Justin Topa pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his first save as a Twin.
Minnesota got a boost from second baseman Luke Keaschall, who came off the injured list and delivered a two-run homer -- the first long ball of his career -- and a run-scoring single.
The Tigers won the series opener on Monday by an identical score.
Detroit didn't start two of its All-Stars on Tuesday. Gleyber Torres was scratched from the starting lineup because of left forearm tightness. Riley Greene, who has one hit in 17 at-bats this month, was given a breather.

Here's what you need to know about ESPN's new steaming service and its deals with the NFL and WWE

ESPN 's much-discussed streaming service finally has its launch date. The network announced Wednesday that its direct-to-consumer service and enhanced app will debut Aug. 21. The announcement coincided with Disney's quarterly earning report. This week's expanded deals with the NFL and a new partnership with WWE provides ESPN the more inventory and offerings, which it hopes will bolster the company in a landscape that is divided among cable, satellite and streaming. Will the ESPN service result in more subscribers? According to Nielsen, streaming usage surpassed broadcast and cable combined in U.S. television usage for the first time. Streaming was at 44.8% compared to linear's 44.2%. When Nielsen started keeping track in May 2021 linear was at 64% compared to streaming's 26%. The ESPN DTC will start out with around 25 million subscribers as those currently getting ESPN+ will migrate to the new platform. Many of those though are cable and satellite subscribers who get the service through deals with their provider. ESPN is hoping that more cord cutters will pay up to $29.95 per month since it will offer all the ESPN networks — ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SECN, ACCN, ESPNEWS, ESPN Deportes, ESPN on ABC, ESPN+, ESPN3, SECN+ and ACCNX — as well as being able to bundle NFL Network and NFL RedZone through a deal with NFL+ Premium. Trying to determine how many of the DTC service subscribers are cord cutters will be more difficult though. Disney announced during its earnings call Wednesday that it will stop releasing ESPN streaming subscriber metrics beginning next quarter. ESPN was in nearly 100 million households in 2013. Over the past 12 years due to cord cutting and streaming, that number has dropped to 60 million. Over the next two years, that is expected to decrease to fewer than 50 million. What do the NFL and WWE deals mean for ESPN's market footprint? Live sports remains valuable property, but the NFL is the beachfront house. For taking over NFL Network, which had also been steadily losing subscribers, ESPN gets three additional NFL games along with another outlet to air Monday night games when there are more than one, as well as the ability for its app users to get specialty highlights of their favorite players or teams. There will also be ways to access stats, betting and fantasy sports info on the app while watching games. The WWE premium live events (they're no longer called pay-per-views) also makes sense when ESPN takes over from Peacock next year. After all, the E in ESPN stands for entertainment. As Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria pointed out when it started carrying 'Monday Night Raw' earlier this year, the WWE has a multigenerational and loyal fan base that will flock to whoever carries the events. The WWE deal applies only to the U.S. though. Netflix has the rights for overseas. Can all of this turn around ESPN's financial outlook? It does carry some risks. ESPN had $4.3 billion in revenue last quarter, an increase of 1% from last year, but the operating profit decreased 7% to $1 billion due to increased rights fees. It is paying the NFL an average of $2.7 billion per year while the NBA 11-year deal that begins this upcoming season averages $2.6 billion per year. The five-year WWE deal will average $325 million per year. This also comes at a time when the network opted out of its $550 million contract with Major League Baseball beginning next year and appears to be out of the running for Formula One rights. ESPN pays $75 million to $90 million per year under its three-year deal, but Liberty Media, which owns F1, is seeking at least $120 million for the next contract, which begins in 2026. ESPN needs more than cable and satellite subscriber affiliate fees, which is also why it is launching a DTC product to gain more revenue. The past two years, it was been involved in prolonged negotiations with DirecTV and Spectrum before reaching deals. How can viewers get the ESPN streaming service? If cable and satellite subscribers already get ESPN+, they will automatically migrate to the new service. For cord cutters, there is an offer where they can get the ESPN unlimited plan with Disney+ and Hulu for $29.99/month for the first 12 months. ___

'One of the best, if not the best, to put on the white shirt'

We asked for your views on where Son Heung-min ranked in the pantheon of Tottenham players following his move to Los Angeles are some of your comments:Ian: Who's going to replace Sonny? One of the best, if not the best, to put on the white shirt. I cannot think of another Spurs player who has done more, given more and deserved more. Good luck with the rest of your career, Sonny, and thank you for the 10 years you played for Son has been a wonderfully loyal player to Tottenham, conducting himself with grace and dignity, sometimes during very trying periods at the club. Where does Son rank in the pantheon of Tottenham players? Well, when you consider players like Ron Burgess, Danny Blanchflower, Jimmy Greaves, Steve Perryman, Glenn Hoddle, Gary Mabbutt, Paul Gascoigne etc, I'm afraid Son is quite a fair way down a long list of glittering talent. So to all those fans calling for a statue to be built - if Tottenham Hotspur build any statue that isn't "Sir" Bill Nicholson, I will seriously lose my Son Heung-min has been an inspirational role model for both young and old football players and supporters alike throughout his 10-year stay at Tottenham Hotspur. He is not only a fantastic footballer, but the way he always plays with a smile, and conducts himself both on and off the pitch, is a rare attribute in the modern game. He has the admiration of both the Korean public and his adoptive Spurs family. As a captain, a leader, a winner and a superb human being, he rightly deserves iconic status. Although I'm sad he has moved on to pastures new, he leaves behind not only a legacy but so many happy memories for those who watched him play for Spurs, and for that we shall be forever grateful. Truly a lilywhite I admit I was underwhelmed on the signing of Son... but he has proved to be possibly the best signing in the modern era - for the way he has improved the moral compass throughout the club. let alone his contribution on the pitch in one of the greatest ever partnerships with Harry Kane. Sonny can leave with his head held high and he deserves everything that is awaiting his next step. Good luck and thank you.

Khamzat Chimaev shuts down rumour around Dricus Du Plessis title fight at UFC 319

Khamzat Chimaev has dismissed a rumour that he could retire if he wins the middleweight title at UFC 319 this month. On 16 August, Chimaev will challenge champion Dricus Du Plessis in Chicago, as one of the UFC's most fearsome contenders finally gets a title shot after being slowed by injury and illness. With those setbacks in mind, back-up fighter Caio Borralho said in July that 'whispers' suggest Chimaev will call time on his career if he wins the gold. However, Chimaev has moved to dismiss that speculation, telling ESPN on Wednesday (6 August): 'Yeah, I've seen Caio said... I don't know where he hears those things. 'I need money, bro! This is not enough, just to go for the one title. 'Hopefully if I don't get injured or some stuff, I'm gonna defend the belt or fight for another belt in Abu Dhabi as well.' Chimaev, 31, has struggled with injuries and illness during his five-year UFC tenure, but when he has competed, he has been near-perfect. The Russian is 14-0 as a professional, 8-0 in the UFC, and holds wins over former champions Kamaru Usman and Robert Whittaker – the latter of whom he submitted in round one in October, crushing Whittaker's teeth in the process. Previously, there were rumours that Chimaev could not travel to the US, with the Russian having last competed stateside in 2022 and having fought in Abu Dhabi in his two bouts since then. However, he will return to US soil for UFC 319, where he faces Du Plessis in the main event. If Du Plessis or Chimaev falls out of the fight on short notice, though, Borralho will step in. The Brazilian, 32, alluded to a potential Chimaev retirement in July, telling MMA Today: 'I heard, somewhere, some people saying that if he wins the belt, he is gonna retire. 'Some little talks, some whispers, you know? If he wins the belt, he retires. I'm not sure of that, I don't know if I believe that or not, but it's an option. 'There's too much pressure on him. [He's had] health problems and a lot of pressure from his country. Maybe he retires, maybe not. 'He has a lot of money already, like a lot of money. He's good with money. He'd already be the champion [in this case], so why not retire? I'd do the same.' While Chimaev has been a scary force inside the Octagon, Du Plessis has been formidable. The South African, 31, has an overall record of 23-2 and is 9-0 in the UFC – with two title defences under his belt. Du Plessis won the middleweight title in January 2024 with a decision win over Sean Strickland, and he replicated that result to retain the strap this February. In between those fights, he submitted former champion Israel Adesanya in another successful title defence. Like Chimaev, 'Stillknocks' also holds a win over Whittaker, having scored a TKO of the ex-champion in 2023.
