A photo of a couple riding a personal mobility aid (PMA) has raised questions about the legality and safety of the two-seater vehicle.
Akira Heng shared the photo on Thursday (July 3) in the Complaint Singapore Facebook group. It showed a man, wearing a long-sleeved shirt with the Grab logo, riding the PMA with a female passenger seated behind him.
The post quickly gained traction, with many netizens raising concerns about the vehicle's legality on public roads. Some also questioned the safety of its battery, fearing the potential risk of a fire or an explosion.
The photo appeared to have originated from Facebook user Patrick Ang, who had earlier shared it with the caption, "Why do I even buy a car?".
Heng noted that he had found an identical-looking PMA on Taobao priced at $880, excluding delivery fees. He expressed curiosity about how much shipping would cost, and whether such an item would clear customs checks, given its size and questionable legality.
PMAs restricted to single seat: LTA
Land Transport Authority (LTA) regulations state that PMAs are limited to a single seat and are intended solely for individuals who are unable to walk or face difficulty walking.
From 2026, PMAs will be subject to additional regulations, including a maximum speed of 6kmh. They will also be restricted in size: they must not exceed 70cm in width, 120cm in length, 150cm in height, and 300kg in weight.
In May, Shin Min Daily News reported that similar PMAs, resembling Thailand's tuk-tuks, were seen parked near the Muslim cemetery in Lim Chu Kang. Some were being used to carry materials within the cemetery grounds.
Cemetery worker Rosli (transliterated), 66, said these PMAs were typically used for transporting construction materials on-site.
Another worker, Saleh (transliterated), 60, said he had purchased his PMA for $3,800 from a bicycle shop in Bukit Batok that helped him import it from China.
In response to Shin Min's queries, LTA stated that enforcement action had been taken, and the vehicles were seized for investigation.
"These vehicles are not approved for use and are currently impounded. All vehicles must be approved before being allowed on public roads."

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox SINGAPORE - More than half of the 106 latest seventh-generation MRT trains slated for the North-South and East-West lines (NSEWL) lines have entered service, two years after the first unit was deployed. As at June 29, 61 Alstom Movia R151 trains have entered service, a spokesperson for the Land Transport Authority (LTA) told The Straits Times. With three new trains being introduced monthly since October 2024, up from two per month in 2023, the train fleet renewal is expected to be complete by 2026. The first R151 trains entered service in June 2023. The new trains replace the first-generation Kawasaki Heavy Industry (KHI) trains. In September 2024, the failure of a KHI train crippled service along a stretch of the East-West Line for six days, in one of the worst disruptions in Singapore's rail history. Transport operator SMRT, which runs the line, was fined $3 million by the LTA. The delay in new train delivery, stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic, was cited by SMRT as a reason for the KHI trains remaining in use and the operator extending the interval between overhauls beyond the manufacturer's requirement. The LTA said that there are 16 KHI trains in service on the NSEWL. By September, these trains will be phased out, according to a post by SMRT on its Facebook page on June 23. Designed in Germany, the new R151 trains are assembled in Changchun, China. They have built-in condition monitoring capabilities and diagnostic systems that can pick up faults early and track the performance of various systems in real time. The cars have bigger open spaces to increase passenger capacity while maintaining the number of seats. Other upgrades on board include wider windows and perch seats for passengers. The first 66 of the 106 trains were ordered in 2018 at the cost of $1.2 billion to replace the first-generation KHI trains. Another 40 trains, costing $337.8 million, were bought in 2020 to replace now-retired second-generation Siemens and third-generation Kawasaki-Nippon Sharyo trains. Alongside the KHI trains (introduced in 1987) and the R151, three other generations of trains, added between 2011 and 2018, are also operating on the NSEWL. These were manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries and CSR Qingdao Sifang. They bring the NSEWL total fleet to 169 trains. Work to renew the NSEWL started in 2012. Valued at $2.6 billion, the refurbishment included not only new trains but also a new signalling system that allows the trains to run at shorter intervals, upgraded power rails that supply electricity to the trains, and a track circuit system capable of detecting rail defects. LTA said that the improvements have boosted the NSEWL's reliability, captured by the lines' Mean Kilometres Between Failure (MKBF), which is the reliability benchmark used for subways globally. The authority added that since 2019, the NSEWL's MKBF has been over a million train-km between delays of more than five minutes, compared with 70,000 train-km for the North-South line and 60,000 train-km for the East-West line in 2012. In LTA's latest rail reliability report, covering up to September 2024, the MKBF for the East-West MRT line, after accounting for the major service disruption, stood at 2.03 million train-km, down from 3.36 million train-km in 2023.

Bluebird's answer to Grab and Gojek? Not discounts

[JAKARTA] Bluebird, one of Indonesia's oldest taxi companies, has been around for 53 years. Today, it faces competition from tech giants like Grab and Gojek as well as emerging players like Vietnam's Xanh SM, an electric vehicle startup that operates as Green SM in Indonesia. But rather than racing to match these newer competitors on price or scale, Bluebird is sticking to delivering consistent and reliable service. 'We're not targeting every segment and we're not [entirely] premium either,' says Andre Djokosoetono, CEO of Bluebird Group, in an interview with Tech in Asia during the Asia Economic Summit in Jakarta. 'We serve the non-price-sensitive market.' Judging by Bluebird's financials, the strategy works. The company has consistently been profitable since its November 2014 IPO, aside from Covid-era blips. In 2024, it earned 592.7 billion rupiah (S$46.6 million) in net profit out of 5 trillion rupiah in net revenue. Against price wars Bluebird sees its segment as more focused on customers who prioritise consistency and service over cost. Sign Up Sign Up As players like Xanh SM enter the market with fully electric fleets and aggressive promotions, Bluebird is deliberately steering clear of competing on price. Djokosoetono says the company has 'never been tempted to do price wars.' 'You can't lower your prices and deliver a consistent quality,' he points out. Amid competition from Gojek and Grab, Xanh SM has made aggressive moves. In December 2024, the Vietnamese company revealed its plan to operate 10,000 vehicles in Indonesia by the end of 2025. In comparison, Bluebird had a fleet of 24,500 taxis as of April this year. 'We are delivering the service with certain standards of quality that require a lot of infrastructure,' says Djokosoetono, adding that the company also has to train its drivers to meet those standards. To be clear, Grab and Gojek are much bigger companies in terms of size. Grab, for instance, earned US$643 million in Indonesia revenue in FY 2024 – more than twice Bluebird's, though that amount also includes other verticals like food delivery and financial services. But matching Grab and Gojek's scale may mean compromising quality, and in turn, hurt the Bluebird brand. Plus, despite the competition, Bluebird has chosen to partner its VC-backed rivals. Its fleet is available on both Gojek and Grab – the former even acquired a 4.33 per cent stake in Bluebird back in 2020. That doesn't mean Bluebird has not had to evolve to stay competitive with Grab and Gojek. In 2015, the company rolled out the MyBluebird app, which saw more than 40 per cent year-on-year growth in usage in the first quarter of 2025. Djokosoetono reveals that the app has already been downloaded more than 1.5 million times this year. In 2024, Bluebird reported a 14 per cent increase in revenue and a 28 per cent growth in net profit, with a margin of around 12 per cent. It aims to exceed those figures this year and is on track to do so, with Q1 revenue up 16 per cent year on year, the CEO says. Bluebird's offline services – like street-hailing – also offer it some measure of differentiation with Grab and Gojek. Customers can still book a ride through the company's call centre, with Djokosoetono pointing out that even new users avail of this option. The company says it's 'agnostic' about how rides are booked or paid for. From EVs to AI Bluebird started experimenting with EVs as early as 2019, long before most of the industry paid attention. Today, it has about 500 electric vehicles on the road. That number could grow to 1,000 by year-end, depending on whether vehicle supply and pricing align with its service standards. Bluebird is also quietly working on an autonomous driving project, though it acknowledges that Indonesia is still far from ready for mass adoption. Notably, the company believes that road conditions, not regulation, are the bigger barrier to autonomous vehicles in the country. In the meantime, Bluebird is investing in AI to improve how its fleet operates. The company uses AI to predict demand and move vehicles to passenger hotspots in advance, sometimes 15 to 30 minutes ahead. It's also using algorithms to detect and address inconsistent driving behaviour. This is important because poor driver attitude is now easily amplified online and poses greater reputational risk in the long term. In addition, Bluebird has experienced a shift in customer transactions. More than half of payments are now made through cashless methods, whether through the app, QR code scanning, or partner platforms. But the company isn't dropping cash payments anytime soon, with Djokosoetono pointing out that 'some customers still want to pay in cash.' Bluebird is open to mergers and acquisitions. It acquired intercity shuttle bus operator Cititrans in 2019, which has expanded to 10 cities in Java. Djokosoetono says another deal is in the works, though he declined to share details. 'Organic and inorganic growth are always options for us,' says the CEO. 'If we can accelerate with inorganic options, we will do it as well.' TECH IN ASIA
