Housefull 5 director REACTS to backlash over sexist humour in Akshay Kumar starrer: ' These are characters who are sexist, who are misogynistic...'

Housefull 5's box office success is overshadowed by criticism for its sexist humor, prompting director Tarun Mansukhani to defend his creative choices. He argues the flawed characters and their actions are for entertainment purposes and story-driven, not reflective of real-world beliefs. Mansukhani also highlights the film's equal-opportunity humor, questioning why only sexism towards women is criticized. While Housefull 5 is raking in big numbers at the box office, it's also sparking a heated debate off-screen. The Akshay Kumar-starrer has drawn criticism for its sexist and politically incorrect humour, prompting director Tarun Mansukhani to break his silence. In a recent interview, he addressed the backlash and defended the film's controversial tone, calling it a creative choice rooted in the characters—not a reflection of real-life beliefs. In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Tarun directly addressed the backlash. Defending the film's controversial humour and tone, he explained that the characters are intentionally flawed and not meant to be role models. He emphasized that portraying sexist or misogynistic characters in a murder mystery doesn't reflect the views of the actors, director, or producers, but simply serves the story being told. Further defending his stance, the director pointed out that the film also pokes fun at its male characters. He noted that scenes featuring male leads—like Dino being naked in two sequences and others showing their butts—are rarely called out, questioning why criticism is only aimed at sexism toward women. He added that the backlash doesn't bother him, as his focus while making Housefull 5 was purely on entertaining the audience and earning their appreciation—not on anticipating reactions to the film's content. Despite mixed to negative reviews, Housefull 5 has proven its box office strength, crossing the Rs 200 crore mark globally within just a week of its release.

Housefull 5 Day 8 India Box Office: Akshay Kumar led comic-caper adds Rs 5.75 crore to tally on 2nd Friday

The Akshay Kumar-led comic caper, Housefull 5, directed by Tarun Mansukhani, wrapped up its first week at the India box office with a decent Rs 114.40 crore. The film, backed by Sajid Nadiadwala and co-starring Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Nargis Fakhri, Sonam Bajwa, and a host of other actors, added an alright Rs 5.5-6 crore on 2nd Friday, to take the 8 day cume to Rs 120.15cr net. Let's dig deep into the theatrical performance of Housefull 5 so far. After a promising start last Friday, June 6, 2025, Housefull 5 saw robust growth over the opening weekend, capitalizing on the festive boost from Bakri Eid. The weekdays, however, saw a noticeable dip, putting the long run of the movie in jeopardy. The movie has stabilised a little on Friday but exponential second weekend growth is very important since it will become the second most preferred Bollywood movie option from the coming Friday, when Sitaare Zameen Par releases. By the end of the weekend, the total of Housefull 5 should exceed Rs 140 crore at least. Housefull 5's day-wise net collections in India are as under:- Housefull 5's global performance has also been reasonable, grossing Rs 180 crore worldwide in its first week. Most likely by Sunday morning, Housefull 5 will have entered the Rs 200 crore worldwide club. Given the movie's steep budget, it requires Rs 275 crore worldwide to just breakeven. If the movie fails to hit this number, the producers will lose money on the movie. At Rs 325-350 crore worldwide, the movie can be declared a hit; but that looks very unlikely. The only positive out of the performance of Housefull 5 is that Akshay Kumar has regained his ability to open his films to reasonably good numbers. Since Sooryavanshi, almost every movie of the actor took a low or poor opening. It is with Housefull 5 that Akshay Kumar has regained the ability to pull crowds. Comedy@Housefull 5: The more the painful

'The more the merrier' goes the saying. In the case of Housefull 5, a comedy franchise that refuses to end, it's more the painful. The parrot shtick returns and it's still agonisingly bad and unfunny. So is the gag with Akshay Kumar and monkeys indulging in a most distasteful bits though are when women's bodies are fetishised upon—again and again—for cheap jokes. Again more embarrassing than time the gang of ludicrous men is on a cruise and there's a killer on the loose. It's dressed up in a silver Squid Game-like mask and has the slasher skills of the Scream killer. That alone, it appears, is reason enough to give the fifth instalment of Housefull a blood-soaked scary font. But Sajid Nadiadwala, who here apart from producer also gets story and screenplay credit, forgets the killer for significant chunks of this comedy, which runs far too plot's to do with who's the real Jolly, the heir to a throne of billions. Is it Akshay Kumar's Julius, Riteish Deshmukh's Jallabuddin or Abhishek Bachchan's Jalbhushan? The three men come aboard with their partners (Nargis Fakhri, Jacqueline Fernandez and Sonam Bajwa) in tow. It doesn't take too long before there's infidelity and lying and some old-fashioned Fardeen Khan, Johnny Lever, Chunky Panday, Shreyas Talpade, Dino Morea, Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff and, later in second half, Nana Patekar all join in on the shenanigans. However, the more crowded the field gets, the more tedious it is for Tarun Mansukhani to keep the narrative familiar and dated, come every now and then, as do far too many songs, which all sound and look the same. It's doesn't take long to figure that not just the ship but even the story is at sea. The body count piles up but the humour quotient is consistently the time Housefull turns to let's-find-the-killer plot with Patekar's dhoti-clad, tilak-wearing Interpol cop from London at the helm, the film is beyond redemption. Kumar is the most bearable of the lot, keeping the histrionics under check for most part while Deshmukh and Bachchan aren't give much material here to cast an and sensibility is not why you watch the Housefull series, but this instalment is neither a 'killer' comedy nor a scary to India Today Magazine
