Mizoram's proximity to Golden Triangle fuels drug trafficking: CM

Lalduhoma stated this while flagging off the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (Drugs Free India Campaign), the Mizoram State Level and Aizawl District Level programmes, organised in Aizawl, featuring a "Rally – Fight Against Drugs" with the participation of over 600 students from various schools and colleges.
He emphasised that drugs bring no benefit to society and must be eradicated completely. He also urged communities to be vigilant and united in their stand against drug abuse, ensuring that Mizo society remains protected from such harmful influences.
He encouraged young people to abstain entirely from drugs, warning that even occasional use is the first step towards addiction. He further called on those already trapped in addiction to courageously step away and rebuild their lives.
The programme was also addressed by health minister Lalrinpuii and excise & narcotics minister Lalnghinglova Hmar. Participants carried placards bearing anti-drug messages, and a competition was organised for the best placard designs, with prizes distributed to the winners.
The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (Drugs Free India Campaign) is currently being implemented in 372 districts across India, including all districts in Mizoram. The campaign focuses primarily on creating awareness about the harmful effects of drug use and preventing first-time users from starting. The rally in Aizawl was organised as part of the 5th anniversary of the campaign.
Meanwhile the state excise & narcotics records said 49 people including 7 females have died in the state since January till Wednesday due to drug abuse.

Drug abuse big threat to nation's progress: Mandya DC
Mandya: Drug abuse is one of the gravest threats to the nation's progress, and everyone must shun narcotics to combat this menace, said deputy commissioner Kumara. He was speaking after inaugurating the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan – 2025 programme organised by the district police department at the MIMS auditorium here on Wednesday. Kumara stressed that preventing youth from consuming drugs and rehabilitating addicts is a collective social responsibility. "A significant proportion of crimes today are linked to substance abuse. Freeing society from drugs is a joint responsibility of both the public and the police," he said. Kumara urged students to take the lead in reforming peers, family members, and neighbours who have fallen into bad habits. "Human life is sacred—do not destroy it for momentary pleasures," he advised, calling on youth to adopt ethical values and build strong personalities that serve society. Superintendent of police Mallikarjun Baladandi said many youth and workers ruin their futures through addiction. The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, launched by the Union govt in 2020, aims to educate students in schools, colleges, and universities about the dangers of drug use. The Narcotics Bureau is also working nationwide to rehabilitate addicts, he added. Later, zilla panchayat CEO KR Nandini administered an oath to students pledging to stay away from substance abuse. MIMS director Dr Narasimhaswamy, additional superintendent of police Gangadhar Swamy, MIMS college principal Dr Hanumanth Prasad, and District Tobacco Control Cell officer Thimmaraju were also present. Aizawl, Aug 13 (PTI) Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Wednesday said that the state's close proximity to the 'Golden Triangle', a region in southeast Asia infamous for drug manufacturing, is causing an inflow of drugs. The chief minister was addressing a state-level programme on 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan' (Drugs Free India Campaign) here. More than 600 students from various schools and colleges took part in the event. He said drugs must be eradicated completely as they harm society. 'Mizoram's close geographical proximity to the 'Golden Triangle' is leading to frequent inflow of drugs into the state," he said. 'Golden Triangle' refers to a mountainous region in northeastern Myanmar, northwestern Thailand and northern Laos, infamous for drug manufacturing. Lalduhoma urged all to remain vigilant and united in the fight against drugs to ensure that the Mizo society remains protected from such harmful influences.
