Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi jokes that he expects to play North Carolina and Bill Belichick in the ACC title game

Yahoo3 days ago
Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi is setting high expectations for Bill Belichick's North Carolina tenure.
Narduzzi complimented Belichick's career on Wednesday at ACC media day and joked that he expected to face the Tar Heels for a spot in the College Football Playoff at the end of the season.
'I'll be shocked if he doesn't have success,' Narduzzi said of Belichick. 'I don't have a crystal ball, I'm no genius over here. He's a heck of a football coach. But it takes players and it takes coaches. It takes a program together, it takes everyone moving in the same direction … I expect them to be in the [ACC] championship game against Pitt this year.'
Belichick was hired ahead of the 2025 season after North Carolina parted ways with Mack Brown. It's the first college coaching job for the former New England Patriots coach after he had spent the entirety of his career in the NFL.
The Tar Heels went 6-7 in 2024 after losing their bowl game and haven't won an ACC title since 1980. Pitt, meanwhile, won the 2021 ACC title with Kenny Pickett under center.
Neither team is a favorite to win the conference in 2025. Pitt started the season 7-0 — and beat North Carolina 34-24 in that stretch — but lost its last five games of the season before losing the GameAbove Sports Bowl in six overtimes to Toledo.
UNC's odds to make the ACC title game are +1000 at BetMGM while Pitt's are +1600. Clemson is -175 to appear in the title game, while Miami is favored to be the Tigers' opponent at +125.
The Belichick question in Narduzzi's media scrum wasn't the only one Narduzzi fielded on Wednesday. He was even asked about Belichick at the end of his main news conference and had a question back for the reporter who made the Belichick inquiry.
"Is this a Pitt question, or is this a North Carolina question? Bill Belichick, one of the greatest coaches to ever coach the game," Narduzzi said. "Won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots. I've enjoyed conversations with him, whether it be at Amelia Island or in Zoom calls with ACC coaches. He's a tremendous football coach, really smart.
"Again, he adds a lot of flavor and excitement to the ACC. When you look at Bill Belichick coming to the Atlantic Coast Conference, it just tells you how attractive our conference is."

Getting A Start On Celebrating The Rangers 100th Anniversary

You can't see it or hear about it just yet, but inside Madison Square Garden, the Rangers organization is busy planning for the club's gala 100th anniversary. At this very time a century ago the Garden -- that is the third Garden, not this one – was a year old and already had an NHL team, the New York Americans. Now, a century ago, Conn Smythe was given the job of building a Rangers roster. Now, you Blueshirt fans can get a jump on the MSG marketeers and learn all about the Original 1926-27 Blueshirts, their unusual creation, and the arresting characters that enabled New York to have its first Stanley Cup only a season (1927-28) later. The way to do so is get your hands on a copy of "The Last Original Ranger," a novel by Bryan Reilly. I've read it twice; and my buddy Bernie Rhode just finished his. Together, we are RAVING about it. While "The Last Original Ranger" is called "fiction," it is, but it also isn't. Author Reilly weaves his tale around Murray Murdoch, who made the Blueshirt varsity in 1926 along with the more famous Frank Boucher and the brothers Cook, Bill and Bun. With uncanny historic accuracy, Reilly captures the essence of training camp right into the regular season with both major and minor characters from that era exquisitely portrayed. (One such character really fooled The Maven.) There's also a keen mystery plot which Reilly cleverly disguised and which will be a challenge for any Rangers historian to unravel. J.T. Miller Has To Put Spirit Back Into The Blueshirts Not long after the Rangers packed their gear and went golfing, snorkeling or whatever elsehey do with their petty cash, Joe Micheletti said something not so petty about the team he'd left as an MSG Networks analyst. The beauty part is that Brother O'Reilly can write which makes the whole package a must read. Bottom Line: Reading "The Last Original Ranger," you'll get the feel that this 1926-27 team played only last night and you're reading about them in today's papers. Get a hold of this gem and you can boast that you're the first Ranger fan on your block to start celebrating the your team's 100th anniversary. (P.S. Check my other sidebar today for Bryan Reilly's assessment of the current Rangers. The man may be a novelist, but you'll find that he's also a realist.)

CB Jack Jones agrees to deal with Dolphins

The Dolphins were in the market for veteran cornerback help before Artie Burns tore his ACL this week and they've added some in the wake of that injury. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Dolphins have agreed to terms with former Patriots and Raiders corner Jack Jones. It's a one-year deal for the veteran. Jones was a 2022 fourth-round pick in New England and was waived in November 2023 after being benched in the wake of missing curfew on a road trip. He was claimed off of waivers in Las Vegas and he started 16 of the 17 games he played for the Raiders in 2024. Jones had 69 tackles, three interceptions, and an interception return for a touchdown in those 17 appearances, but he was released after the regime change for the Raiders this offseason. Given the inexperienced corners already on the Dolphins roster, he should have a shot at a starting role in Miami this year as well.
