SIT to probe gang rape case involving Karnataka BJP MLA Munirathna
A special investigation team (SIT) has taken up the case against Karnataka BJP MLA Munirathna who has been accused by a 40-year-old woman of masterminding her gang rape, urinating on her and injecting her with a deadly virus.
Police had booked Munirathna and his alleged accomplices, Vasantha, Channakeshawa and Kamal, on Tuesday.
The SIT had been formed last year after Munirathna was accused of rape, blackmail, harassment, bribery and using casteist language, among other charges. A police officer said that as the SIT had already been probing Munirathna's criminal cases, the latest case, including all evidence and documents, was handed over to it.
According to the FIR, the incident occurred on June 11, 2023, at the MLA's office. The woman, a BJP worker, alleged that Munirathna had influenced others to file false cases against her.
The woman alleged that Munirathna had influenced others to file false cases against her. After being released from jail, she was told by Vasantha and Kamal that Munirathna would help clear the charges against her. She said that Vasantha and Kamal lured her to his office at his behest.
Upon arrival, she was allegedly disrobed by Munirathna, Vasantha, and Channakeshawa. She alleged that the trio threatened to kill her son if she resisted. Munirathna then allegedly instructed the two men to rape her.
In her statement, the woman also claimed that Munirathna urinated on her. Following this, an unidentified person reportedly entered with a white box and handed it to Munirathna, who then used a syringe from the box to inject her. He allegedly threatened to destroy her family if she spoke about the incident.
The woman claimed that she was hospitalised in January and was found to have an incurable virus, prompting her to connect it with the 2023 incident. On Monday, the woman allegedly tried to die by suicide but survived and decided to report the matter to the police.
The police on Tuesday booked the accused under sections 376D (gang rape), 270 (act likely to spread infection), 323 (causing hurt), 354 (assault on a woman), 504 (intentional insult), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 509 (outraging modesty) of the Indian Penal Code.

RSS functionary Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat booked for provocative speech in Mangaluru
Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada district police registered a case against RSS functionary Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat for allegedly delivering a provocative speech during a condolence meeting held in Bantwal. According to police, the event took place on May 12 at the Madwa Palace Kalyana Mantapa in Kavalapaduru village, which falls under the jurisdiction of Bantwal Rural police station. The meeting was organised following the recent murder of Suhas Shetty within Mangaluru City police limits. While addressing a gathering of around 500 people at the event, Bhat allegedly made statements that could disturb communal harmony and incite animosity between different communities. Citing concerns over potential threats to law and order, police registered a case against Bhat on Monday at Bantwal Rural police station under Section 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. "Govt itself is promoting hate speech and is restricting stringent actions to Hindu organisations. Such unilateral actions by govt are unacceptable," he said. He questioned police for not taking action against those who speak of murder by brandishing swords and knives. He warned that these police actions could lead to further unrest in Dakshina Kannada district and advised against using FIRs as a tool for creating an illusion of peace. "Govt should work on building trust across all sections of society," he said. BJP Yuva Morcha district president Nandan Mallya, condemning the case filed against Prabhakar Bhat, said since the Congress govt came to power in the state, continuous cases have been filed against leaders and activists of Hindu organisations, creating an atmosphere of fear. "Police are intimidating Hindu activists by visiting their homes late at night, when women and children are present. It is inhumane behaviour and an abuse of power by the authorities. Such attempts to suppress pro-Hindu voices through legal cases are anti-democratic and not acceptable. To maintain the peaceful environment of the district, such politically motivated police actions must stop immediately," said Mallya.

MP cop benched for instructing gym owner to bar Muslims
BHOPAL: A police officer from Bhopal was removed from active duty and attached to the lines on Monday after a video surfaced showing him instructing a gym owner to bar Muslim trainers and trainees from his facility. The incident took place a few days ago in Ayodhya Nagar locality here when Bajrang Dal members visited a gym and objected to the presence of Muslim trainers, police sources said. Cops were called in to manage the situation, and sub-inspector Dinesh Sharma was among the officers who responded. In the video, Sharma can be heard saying: "No Muslim will come here to give or take training. I have made this clear to you." After the footage sparked outrage, officers initiated an internal inquiry into Sharma's conduct. He was subsequently relieved of field duties and sent to the lines pending further investigation. BJP MP from Bhopal Alok Sharma seemed to defend the SI's remarks. A news agency quoted him as saying that a "list of Muslim trainers would be given to police". Speaking to media on Sunday, Sharma said that a "list of gym instructors" in the city had been compiled and insisted that women clients should be trained exclusively by female instructors. "The list of gym trainers will be handed over to police, who will act according to the law. Love jihad cannot be allowed," the MP told the media.

Arrest of student for communal posts: Getting threats in jail, influencer tells court
Sharmishta Panoli, the 22-year-old law student and social media content creator arrested for allegedly posting communal posts, on Monday filed a petition in Alipore court here, seeking 'adequate protection' and claimed that she was receiving 'multiple threats from other inmates inside the jail, causing her to fear for her safety and well-being'. She has also alleged that she was being denied basic amenities in the jail. Panoli was arrested by the Kolkata Police from Gurgaon in Haryana on Friday and sent to judicial custody till June 13. In her plea, Panoli said that she is suffering from medical ailments and requires regular access to clean drinking water, hygienic sanitation, and proper medical attention. 'No proper hygiene is maintained inside the Alipore Women's Correctional Home. My client is being denied basic amenities. She has kidney-related issues and has not been feeling well. We have submitted a petition and the court has sought a report by June 4,' her lawyer Mohammed Samimuddin was quoted as saying by PTI. Meanwhile, Priyank Kanoongo, a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said a notice has been issued to the West Bengal DGP, directing him to ensure Panoli's safety. 'A notice has been issued to the DGP of West Bengal under Section 12 of the PHR Act, 1993, directing him to ensure the safety of the arrested law student and submit a report to the Commission, including his response on the procedures of arrest,' Kanoongo posted on X. Meanwhile, a Hindu outfit in a letter to Jail Superintendent of Alipore Women's Correctional Home cited threat to the 22-year-old's life and demanded security arrangements for her. 'Sharmishta Panoli's life is under threat as prior to her arrest, she has been receiving rape and death threats by radicalised religious groups… Necessary steps should be taken to ensure her well being,' Shree Ram Swabhiman Parishad stated in the letter. In Delhi, the BJP on Monday upped the ante against the TMC government in West Bengal over the arrest of influencer Panoli, calling the action 'state-sponsored repression' and 'violation' of her right to freedom of speech and expression. BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia also took on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the issue, calling her 'ruthless'. Bar Council of India chairman Manan Kumar Mishra has also called for immediate release and fair trial for Panoli. The senior advocate and Rajya Sabha member said that he was standing firmly with Panoli, whose arrest and judicial custody for a now-deleted social media video despite her immediate apology represented 'an absolute failure of justice and a blatant assault on freedom of expression'. On Monday, the Bar Council of Delhi condemned the influencer's arrest and demanded her 'immediate release to uphold the scale of justice'. The Kolkata Police has dismissed criticisms that they have 'unlawfully' arrested the Instagram influencer and claimed that all legal procedures were followed. Police have defended Panoli's arrest, saying the case was 'duly investigated and adhered to legal procedures'. 'Hate speech and abusive language should not be misconstrued as freedom of speech & expression as enshrined in Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution,' the Kolkata Police added. Complaint filed against Panoli's complainant A police complaint has been filed against Wazahat Khan, the complainant in the Sharmishta Panoli case, in Kolkata, accusing him of hurting religious sentiments through his tweets. Khan's X account is reportedly locked. The complaint against Khan was filed by one Prasun Maitra, who claims to be the president of an NGO called Atmadeep. 'I have sent a complaint to the Kolkata Police to lodge an FIR against Wazahat Khan. He made derogatory comments about Hindu Goddesses and Hindu culture. In the eyes of the law, everyone is the same. So, action should be taken against Wazahat Khan,' Maitra said. Kolkata Police's Cyber Cell has asked Maitra to lodge his complaint with the designated cyber unit. DC (Port) Harikrishna Pai said, 'FIRs are lodged in other units. So, we are seeking legal options.'
