RS Berkane win Confed Cup as Fadlu Davids' Simba fall just short
Morocco's Renaissance Berkane won the Caf Confederation Cup on Sunday, holding on for a 1-1 draw against 10-man Simba of Tanzania away in the second leg of the final for a 3-1 aggregate victory.
A two-goal advantage from last week's home first leg provided the foundation for a third success in the Confederation Cup in the last six years for the club from the northeast of Morocco.
But they endured a difficult afternoon at Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar as Simba, coached by South African Fadlu Davids, went ahead in the 15th minute through Joshua Mutale and then missed a gilt-edged chance in front of goal minutes later.
Simba had midfielder Yusuph Kagoma sent off five minutes into the second half for a second cautionable offence and two more members of their technical staff were sent to the stands in a tempestuous encounter.
Faouzi Lekjaa must be a Proud man the former RS Berkane President 2009 -2019 when he relinquished his role to Hakim Ben Abdellah after a decade-long tenure as President.

Despite the one-man disadvantage, Simba had the ball in the Berkane net again in the 73rd minute after Steven Mukwala glanced home Jean Charles Aboua's free kick but the goal was ruled offside after a lengthy VAR check.
Berkane then made sure of success when substitute Soumaila Sidibe snatched an equaliser from a tight angle at the start of nine minutes of stoppage time.
It crowned a dream season for Berkane, who won a first Moroccan league title earlier in the season.
Their third Confederation Cup success equals the record for the most successes in the competition, held by Tunisia's CS Sfaxien.

Heinrich Klaasen quits Proteas
Heinrich Klaasen has announced his retirement from international cricket, ending a seven-year career with the Proteas. The 33-year-old announced yesterday that he would be stepping away from the white-ball formats, which follows his retirement from red-ball cricket in 2024. Klaasen made his ODI and T20I debuts in the summer of 2018, and went on to establish himself as one of the most destructive white-ball players of his generation. He has played 60 ODIs and amassed over 2 000 runs at an average of just under 44 in the middle order. His power-hitting prowess was on full display during a blistering career-best 174 against Australia at his home ground, SuperSport Park, in 2023 – the second highest score ever recorded by a number five. Renowned for his dominance against spin, Klaasen also represented South Africa in 58 T20Is, striking at a rate of 141.84. His ability to take on bowling attacks with calculated aggression made him a mainstay in South Africa's limited-overs setup. 'It is a sad day for me as I announce that I have decided to step away from international cricket,' Klaasen said. 'It took me a long time to decide what's best for me and my family for the future. It was truly a very difficult decision but also one that I have absolute peace with. 'From the first day, it was the biggest privilege representing my country and it was everything that I have worked for and dreamed about as a young boy. 'I have made great friendships and relationships that I will treasure for life. Gold, silver, and bronze: South Africa's success at the Muay Thai international games

Image: Supplied SA Muay Thai Organisation coach and president, Kru Nic Radley, said he was proud to see South African athletes compete against the world's best in the home of Thai fighting, supported by his coaching team, which included treasurer and assistant coach Shaheen Price. The organisation took a team of six athletes to the international games in Bangkok, last month. "We are beyond proud of our athletes; we had many highs and lows this trip. "Not only before the tournament but also after," he said, adding that they were grateful for all the support in Thailand. She came home with a hard-earned a bronze medal in the 60kg pro-am division after losing a narrow decision in the semi-finals. Karl Bergemann forced a 1st round stoppage via a cut against a Russian opponent, Alexei Stoyan in the semi-finals. Later on the same day, it was Bergemann who suffered a cut this time, earning himself a silver medal in the Heavyweight pro division. Verné Prinsloo took gold in the 57kg category. Image: Supplied Verné Prinsloo earned herself a gold medal in the 57kg Pro division when she put on a clinical performance against a Mexican opponent Yaire Eunice Alejandro Arjona. It was not only Capetonians who showed up and flew the SA flag at the games as Khaya Ntombela from Durban also got his hands raised. Ntombela earned a gold medal in the 86kg pro-am division by winning via a second-round stoppage and winning an all-out war against a very game opponent from the US.
