Newcastle: Pride artists 'can be totally free in a safe space'

BBC News10-03-2025
Pride allows LGBTQ+ musicians the freedom to perform "without limitations" and bring "out there" stage shows to life, says one of the stars of the annual parade.Michael T Ogilvie, who is once again set to take to the stage at this year's Newcastle Pride, said similar events have helped him hone who he is as an artist. The singer founded The Future is Queer collective, which showcases LGBTQ+ musicians and brings a large choreographed production to Pride every year.Ogilvie said the two-day festival allowed musicians to "get the vision out of their head and onto the stage".
"I know a lot of these LGBTQI+ performers are very out there. They are very flamboyant, they do these massive productions and they've got these great ideas," he said."So it's great to provide these stages where they [the performers] can be totally free and show who they want to be as an artist, without limitations and in front of a really safe space with a really engaged crowd."
Ogilvie's first Pride performance was in Cumbria in 2017, where he performed in front of a crowd of thousands. He said it was rare for a musician to be given the chance to perform to such a large audience so early on in their career, and it had allowed him to hone who he was as an artist."To be given that opportunity was fabulous," he said.
The Future is Queer is set to perform again at this year's Newcastle Pride, when the festival takes over the city on 19 and 20 July.
This year's festival is being headlined by pop star Pixie Lott, stylist-turned-DJ Gok Wan and Drag Race UK finalist Michael Marouli. It will also feature drag group Angels Of The North, as well as tribute acts and dance and cabaret performances. But the festival's organiser, Northern Pride, said it remained committed to ensuring local creatives played a part in the event, and has asked homegrown acts to apply for a slot. The organisation is urging anyone who wants to sing, dance, perform comedy or run a workshop to get in touch.Northern Pride's director, Ste Dunn, said he was overwhelmed by the continued support the Newcastle festival has received in recent years."We are delighted to be bringing an even bigger and better Newcastle Pride to the city centre this year to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community," he said.

RuPaul's Drag Race's La Voix is seventh contestant to join Strictly 2025 line-up

Strictly Come Dancing has announced RuPaul's Drag Race UK star La Voix as the seventh star to join the BBC One show line-up. They stopped by BBC Radio 2 this morning to share the news. A YouTube star, an EastEnders actress and a Love Island winner were among the first batch of contestants announced for Strictly Come Dancing 2025. The popular BBC dancing show, hosted by Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly, will return to TV screens in September with a new host of famous faces competing each week to win the glitterball trophy. Podcast host and YouTube star George Clarke was announced as the sixth celebrity contestant on Tuesday during BBC Radio 1's Going Home drivetime show. George, also known as George Clarkey, said: "Never thought I'd say this … but I'm doing Strictly! Honestly, I've got no idea what I'm doing but I'm excited to get stuck in … and potentially fall over a fair bit." It came after EastEnders actress Balvinder Sopal was revealed as a contestant during a segment filmed live from Albert Square on ITV show Good Morning Britain ( GMB). She said that "being on Strictly is a dream that I held on to, with no proof that it would ever happen". The other stars confirmed to be competing are Love Island winner Dani Dyer, Gladiators star Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, Doctor Who actress Alex Kingston and former footballer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Speaking on The One Show after her reveal, Dani, who is the daughter of actor Danny Dyer, said: "It's such a fun magical show – to be asked to do it is such an honour. I just can't wait to be able to wear (the costumes) – it's going to be so much fun." Former Chelsea footballer Jimmy said: "I'm a father of only girls and Strictly is a part of our home life – I like the show. Let's have a go." Actress Alex, who interrupted her holiday in Italy to speak to hosts Alex Scott and Roman Kemp, joked: "I was super excited but now I'm terrified." Harry, known as Nitro on the rebooted Gladiators, previously competed in last year's Strictly Christmas Special and described his decision to return on Monday as 'so nice I just had to do it twice'. In July, the BBC announced that two 'incredible' new professional dancers, US-born Alexis Warr and Australian dancer Julian Caillon, would be joining the show. Tess and Claudia will return as presenters with Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke and Shirley Ballas on the judges' table. Strictly will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer this September.

Drag Race star drops huge clue they've signed up for BBC Strictly in cryptic post

A Drag Race star has dropped a huge hint that they've signed up for Strictly Come Dancing 2025 but it has caused divide amongst fans as they speculate whether it is actually true A Drag Race star has dropped a huge hint that they've signed up for Strictly Come Dancing 2025 - and they already have a huge connection to the show. Tayce Szura-Radix, better known mononymously as Tayce, found fame when she placed runner-up in the second series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK behind Lawrence Chaney. ‌ Following this, a string of modelling gigs followed and she started hosting various slots on BBC Radio 1. She also made an appearance on Celebrity Gogglebox, but in 2024, she emerged victorious as the winner of the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special. At the time, she was paired with professional dancer Kai Widdrington and has now sparked speculation that she has signed up for the full series. ‌ In a cryptic post on Instagram, she wrote: "Guess I was too much" and added a disco ball to her five-word statement. The performer immediately sparked speculation amongst her fans, although they remained divided on whether or not she had actually signed up. On Reddit, one fan said: "She's trying to throw off the scent" but another disagreed as he said: "Idk, it sounds to me like girlie was waiting for the call, but it didn't happen." It comes after Strictly Come Dancing's Gorka Marquez pulled out of show earlier this month. ‌ Strictly Come Dancing's policy on past contestants returning after first 2025 star named A third fan said: "I would be delighted to see the fab Tayce!" Others suspected that the post itself came from a place of not being selected for the full programme, as one fan pointed out on X: "Idk, I would interpret this as the opposite - she saw someone else from her Xmas special was cast and she wasn't picked, hence saying she 'guess[es] she was too much. I guess we'll see." Olympic sprinter and Gladiators star Harry Aikines-Aryeetey was the first contestant confirmed for the 2025 line-up earlier on Monday. Harry, known as Nitro on the rebooted Gladiators, previously competed in last year's Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special and described his decision to return as "so nice I just had to do it twice". This prompted another fan to say of the speculation that Tayce will be taking part: "It feels odd though that they'd have 2 from the same Christmas special on ‌ Dani Dyer, Alex Kingston and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink were then announced as the latest recruits for the upcoming series live on BBC One's The One Show on Monday. Speaking from the studio after her reveal, former Love Island winner Dani said: "It's such a fun magical show – to be asked to do it is such an honour. I just can't wait to be able to wear (the costumes) – it's going to be so much fun." Actress Alex, who took time out of her her holiday in Italy to speak to hosts Alex Scott and Roman Kemp, joked upon the announcement: "I was super excited but now I'm terrified." ‌ Tayce's post comes just as EastEnders actress Balvinder Sopal, who stars as Suki Panesar-Unwin on the BBC One soap, was announced as the fifth contestant set to take part. Speaking to Good Morning Britain's Richard Arnold live from the set of Albert Square on Tuesday, she said: "I have danced before,I dabbled a little bit. I did Latin and ballroom as a hobby. And I think when you've got a passion for it, you'll naturally enjoy it. I don't know if I'll be any good but I'll enjoy it! I love the Latin, I think they're just exciting and passionate dancers, aren't they? It's the drama, isn't it? We all love the drama! In July, the BBC announced that two "incredible" new professional dancers, US-born Alexis Warr and Australian dancer Julian Caillon, would be joining the show, which starts this autumn Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman are back to present with Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke and Shirley Ballas returning as judges. Strictly will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer for its new series this September.
