Newcastle: Pride artists 'can be totally free in a safe space'
Pride allows LGBTQ+ musicians the freedom to perform "without limitations" and bring "out there" stage shows to life, says one of the stars of the annual parade.Michael T Ogilvie, who is once again set to take to the stage at this year's Newcastle Pride, said similar events have helped him hone who he is as an artist.The singer founded The Future is Queer collective, which showcases LGBTQ+ musicians and brings a large choreographed production to Pride every year.Ogilvie said the two-day festival allowed musicians to "get the vision out of their head and onto the stage".
"I know a lot of these LGBTQI+ performers are very out there. They are very flamboyant, they do these massive productions and they've got these great ideas," he said."So it's great to provide these stages where they [the performers] can be totally free and show who they want to be as an artist, without limitations and in front of a really safe space with a really engaged crowd."
Ogilvie's first Pride performance was in Cumbria in 2017, where he performed in front of a crowd of thousands.He said it was rare for a musician to be given the chance to perform to such a large audience so early on in their career, and it had allowed him to hone who he was as an artist."To be given that opportunity was fabulous," he said.
The Future is Queer is set to perform again at this year's Newcastle Pride, when the festival takes over the city on 19 and 20 July.
This year's festival is being headlined by pop star Pixie Lott, stylist-turned-DJ Gok Wan and Drag Race UK finalist Michael Marouli.It will also feature drag group Angels Of The North, as well as tribute acts and dance and cabaret performances.But the festival's organiser, Northern Pride, said it remained committed to ensuring local creatives played a part in the event, and has asked homegrown acts to apply for a slot.The organisation is urging anyone who wants to sing, dance, perform comedy or run a workshop to get in touch.Northern Pride's director, Ste Dunn, said he was overwhelmed by the continued support the Newcastle festival has received in recent years."We are delighted to be bringing an even bigger and better Newcastle Pride to the city centre this year to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community," he said.

'Let me be VERY clear here,' she wrote June 4 in in Instagram Stories, 'I've been an out and proud queer, bisexual woman and I wouldn't have it any other way.' 'I have and will always be very vocal of my support of LGBTQIA+ rights and the community....' In another post she again identified herself as bisexual telling a critic, 'I absolutely have stated that I'm bisexual multiple times throughout the years,' so the news came as no surprise to her parents. Both were there to see the young singer and actress make her debut at Carnegie Hall in The Great War & The Great Gatsby which will air on PBS on Veteran's Day. Gracie will make her film debut in the upcoming Tox lead by Margaret Colin. The plot focuses on a woman, who after years of being obsessed about being perfect, returns to her home town for her high school reunion, sure that her newfound beauty fill erase the past. No release date has been announced for the independent film yet.

Holmfirth Pride brings town together after homophobic attack
A town has held its first Pride event in response to a homophobic attack on a man as he was leaving a Pride 2025 took place on Saturday and Sunday after being organised by residents Hilary Bowyer and Isobel festival included activities such as a rainbow scavenger hunt, drag bingo, and an exhibition of queer art featuring local owner Ms Heely, said the event was organised after a man in his 20s was attacked by five men outside The Old Bridge on Norridge Bottom on 12 April. She said: "As a close-knit community, we were all horrified when we heard about the incident and did not want anybody to feel like we were not supportive."We did not want people to think that this is the sort of thing that happens here and we wanted to show it does not represent us as a community."All of the 65 businesses in the town have got bunting up and people are leaving their mark in the streets with chalk to show that there is acceptance and we are welcoming to all."Ms Heely added the positive response to the event had "had me in tears" as it had shown how the "community has really rallied together". She said: "It has been heartwarming to see such a positive response to something negative."We've had six weeks to pull the project together to make sure it was ready for Pride month and were lucky to get funding from the parish council and Kirklees Council."The response has been so great that we're planning to hold the event again next year."We just want to send a message that everybody belongs and we will not tolerate hate."The attack left the victim with facial injuries after being punched and kicked by the group, who had also made offensive slurs to the victim and his partner, and was investigated as a hate crime by West Yorkshire Police.
