White House Reacts with Sarcasm and Criticism
Former Vice President Kamala Harris made her first major public appearance since losing the 2024 presidential election to Donald Trump , drawing widespread attention both for her pointed political speech and an unexpected dance moment. Attending the 20th anniversary celebration of Emerge America in San Francisco, Harris addressed a room full of Democratic supporters with a sharp critique of the current administration's early performance.Harris condemned President Trump's policies on tariffs and immigration, warning that the country is headed 'too fast in a dangerous direction.' She described the current pace of political change as 'a high-velocity event' driven by a long-standing agenda to undermine public services. 'An agenda to slash public education. An agenda to shrink government and then privatize its services,' Harris stated. 'All while giving tax breaks to the wealthiest amongst us. By the way, an agenda that is not lowering costs. Not making life more affordable. And not what they promised.'She also emphasized that 'the White House belongs to the people,' accusing the Trump administration of abandoning America's core democratic values. 'Some people are describing what's been happening in recent months as absolute chaos,' she added, pointing to rising tariffs that she said were 'clearly inviting a recession.'While Harris's speech made political waves, it was a backstage video that captured the public's imagination online. The clip shows Harris dancing with TikTok creator Kenneth Walden, known as @2rawtooreal, to the viral hit 'Boots on the Ground' by 803Fresh. The light-hearted exchange happened behind the scenes at the gala, with Walden asking Harris if she had learned the popular line dance. 'I have not. Will you teach me?' she responded. The pair danced together, finishing with a high-five.Dressed in a navy suit, Harris kept in step with Walden as the two swayed to the music. The clip, shared on Instagram and other platforms, quickly went viral—drawing mixed reactions. Some social media users celebrated the video as 'fun,' while others criticized it as 'cringe,' questioning the optics of the moment so soon after an election defeat. In the video, Walden also asked Harris how she manages to maintain her sense of 'Black joy' while in the public eye. 'I feel very blessed. I have an incredible husband, who is here right now,' Harris said, referencing Doug Emhoff. 'And an incredible circle of friends, who are family, and family. And I think it's just important to be with those people who love you and care about you and get you.' The comment also indirectly addressed recent speculation about the state of her marriage.Harris's appearance did not go unnoticed by the current administration. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, 'We encourage Kamala Harris to continue going out and doing speaking engagements.'Meanwhile, Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller was far more direct, calling Harris's remarks a reminder of how 'blessed' Americans are to have Trump in office instead of her. He went further, stating that if Harris had won, 'Biden's disastrous policies would have been continued' and labeled her involvement in immigration policy during her vice presidency 'an eternal stain on the Democrat party.'Harris has yet to formally announce her next political move. There is growing speculation that she may run for Governor of California, with the election scheduled for June next year. Reports suggest a decision could be revealed by the end of the summer.

Law student Sharmishta Panoli walks out of Kolkata jail. ‘Wiser, learnt her lesson,' says her father
Kolkata Police arrested the 22-year-old influencer, Sharmishta, based on a 15 May FIR against her at the Garden Reach Police Station over a social media video. Panoli who was arrested on 31 May from Gurugram by Kolkata Police was released from jail Friday, a day after the Calcutta High Court granted her bail. New Delhi: A day before law student Sharmishta Panoli walked out of the Alipore Women's Correctional Home, her father had said she 'has learnt her lesson and will come out wiser'. Speaking to ThePrint over a call Thursday evening, only hours after her bail was granted, the father said, 'We tried to remain very low key on this and stayed away from politics, but after what happened in Gurgaon (Sharmishta's arrest), we think there is definitely a political undertone to this.' Sharmishta stands accused of hurting religious sentiments, promoting enmity on the grounds of religion, and intentional insults while talking about Operation Sindoor in a video she posted on her Instagram page. Following massive outrage over her post, she issued an unconditional apology on social media on 15 May. Attempting to explain what was at the root of the video posted and subsequently taken down by the young law student, her father pointed to the charged environment created by celebrity politicians on social media. 'Look at Kangana Ranaut, what does she say? Some Gen Z kids will talk like Kangana Ranaut. They need to draw a line somewhere—on what may be acceptable and what may not be,' Prithviraj Panoli said. 'Sharmishta has learnt her lesson and will come out wiser.' Before Sharmishta's arrest, the Kolkata Police said her family, along with her, was 'absconding'. The police claimed they sought an arrest warrant for Sharmishta from court after failing to locate her to serve her notices. Prithviraj Panoli, however, refuted the police claims. 'Visited Lalbazar multiple times pre-arrest' 'She made the post on 7-8 May and deleted it soon after. However, some people downloaded it and continued sharing it. She received a lot of threats online. People she did not know started calling her. They issued threats to me, as well. So, on 14 May, I asked her to come to Kolkata from Pune, where she is studying,' he said. 'On 15 May morning, she reached Kolkata at 8.30 am. How can the police claim that she was missing from Kolkata then? How do they know where she was or not?' From 15-19 May, the Panoli family, multiple times, visited Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police headquarters, and the Anandapur police station, Prithviraj Panoli said. The family—he added—was attempting to lodge a complaint over threats Sharmishta was receiving. However, the police, according to him, did not inform them of any FIR against Sharmishta. 'We submitted printed copies of all the threats against us. So, there is documented evidence that we had been approaching the police,' said Panoli. The Panoli family is from Bangalore and currently lives in Kolkata. On the sequence of events before the arrest, Prithviraj Panoli told ThePrint, 'On 18 May, I was constantly in touch with the cops at both police stations, sharing all information, along with online threats we got. We approached a different police officer in the evening of 18 May, informing him that we feared for our safety and security.' Giving an instance of the chain of troubles the family has been facing since the video post, Sharmishta's father said, 'On my way back home, I saw seven to 10 people standing inside my society, looking at our tower.' According to the father, Sharmishta left Kolkata for Gurugram for a scheduled internship, starting 22 May, travelling, over the next few days, to her office in Delhi from her hotel inGurugram. Soon after the scare in the society, Prithviraj Panoli, along with other family members, also booked flight tickets to Gurguram. 'Till 25 May, I was in touch with the Lalbazar police,' Prithviraj Panoli said. 'I, at the same time, had asked her (Sharmishta) not to look at anything. We all had switched off our phones, but I was in touch with the police over WhatsApp. How can they say we were absconding?' 'We even asked the police if any FIR had been registered. By then, I had received threats via mail. If the police wanted to get in touch with us, they had our email IDs,' Prithviraj Panoli added. In the early morning of 31 May, the Kolkata Police arrested Sharmishta from her hotel in Gurugram. 'We could not do anything as there was a warrant,' said the father. California funding slashed? Trump administration plans federal grant cuts, escalate fight over policy disputes: Report
Donald Trump has criticised California Governor Gavin Newsom over various policies (File photos) The US administration under Donald Trump is readying plans to withdraw substantial federal funding from California, with implementation potentially beginning Friday, according to various sources, quoted by CNN. Federal departments have reportedly received instructions to identify specific grants that could be withheld from California. A whistleblower informed a Congressional committee that all research grants to the state would be terminated, as reported by one source with knowledge of the situation. California, under Democratic leadership, has consistently been a focus of President Donald Trump's criticism. Last month, Trump had indicated possible withdrawal of federal funds from California regarding a transgender athlete's sports participation, demonstrating his pattern of using funding to achieve policy objectives. The administration reduced flood prevention funding by $126.4 million, and Trump has repeatedly criticised the state's wildfire management earlier this year. There has been ongoing public disagreement between the President and California Governor Gavin Newsom. The state's tertiary education sector faces significant impact from Trump's decision. California Representative Darrell Issa (GOP), while unaware of the impending grant cancellations, told CNN about recent meetings with university officials concerned about their funding stability. "Every university, every research organization, pretty much I saw them passing through here the last two days" Issa said. In response to university representatives' concerns, Issa further told CNN, "We're going to advocate for essentials, but I sent them back and said come to me with specifics. Come to me with the grant and the justification, and I'll advocate for that. But I'm not going to advocate for no cuts; you just get more money every year. That's how we got in this problem."
