DMK not afraid of 'ordinary persons' like Modi, Shah: A Raja

Time of Indiaa day ago

The
DMK
was not afraid of "ordinary persons" like Prime Minister
Narendra Modi
and Union Home Minister
Amit Shah
and has a "counter-ideology" to that of the
BJP
that would ensure the saffron party doesn't gain a foothold in Tamil Nadu, senior party leader
A Raja
said here on Monday.
Addressing a press conference here in response to Amit Shah's criticism of the ruling DMK in Madurai on Sunday, Raja claimed the BJP veteran's remarks on various issues were "blatant lies, disgusting and divisive."
The Lok Sabha MP asserted that the BJP cannot gain a foothold in Tamil Nadu, where Assembly polls are due next year, unlike Delhi or Maharashtra since the
Dravidian ideology
was a counter to the saffron one.

"How did (AAP chief) Arvind Kejriwal come to power (in Delhi)-- he only opposed corruption, did he have an ideology, were there leaders behind him....we are not afraid of Amit Shah and Modi-- after all, they are ordinary persons. The political ideology behind them is invading everywhere and winning, but why is it unable to win here. Because we have an alternative to that ideology," he said referring to the Dravidian philosophy.
"As long as Dravidian ideology is there, they cannot gain foothold in Tamil Nadu. We are not Delhi, Maharashtra and Haryana. We are Tamil Nadu, we are Dravidam, (BJP) cannot come here," he said.

Shah on Sunday asserted that the NDA would form governments in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal next year and targeted the DMK regime in the state by firing fresh "corruption" salvos, including the Rs 4,600 crore sand mining scam. BJP is part of the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Tamil Nadu.
While Raja said the DMK can disprove Shah "word-by-word," on whatever he spoke in Madurai, the people of Tamil Nadu will not accept such things from the BJP leader.
"His remarks don' suit his office of Union Home minister. To put in a nutshell whatever he spoke, they were blatant lies, disgusting and divisive," Raja claimed.
The union minister made "baseless charges," against the ruling dispensation, he said.
"TN Chief Minister M K Stalin has ensured law and order and despite central funds being not available on many occasions, has implemented growth schemes from state funds quickly and unable to digest this, the Centre and the BJP brought Shah to Tamil Nadu," he alleged.
He also lashed out at the Centre over issues including the proposed census and the delimitation.
On Centre approving a caste census, he recalled the BJP's earlier opposition to it and criticism of those demanding such an enumeration and wondered why it has changed its stand now.
On the BJP's upcoming conference on Lord Muruga in Madurai, Raja claimed it was being held with the intention of creating communal rift and derive political mileage out of that.

Amid NEP row, Madras HC tells Centre to consider paying RTE funds to T.N. by delinking it from Samagra Shiksha

The Madras High Court on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) directed the Union Ministry of Education to consider splitting the disbursal of funds to the Tamil Nadu government under its flagship Samagra Shiksha scheme, so that money needed to reimburse private schools under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act can be disbursed. The RTE component amounts to about ₹200 crore, while the total amount pending to Tamil Nadu under the SSS amounts to ₹2,151.59 crore, amidst a row over the State's refusal to implement the National Education Policy, 2020. The court also told the State government that non-receipt of funds from the Centre cannot be used as a 'reason to wriggle out' of its own obligation to pay the private schools. Concurrent responsibility A Division Bench of Justices G.R. Swaminathan and V. Lakshminarayanan noted that the Centre had some issues in releasing SSS funds as the State government has not adopted the NEP. However, it has an independent obligation under the RTE Act of 2009, which has nothing to do with non-adoption of NEP, the judges said. 'Section 7 of the RTE Act states that the Central government and the State governments have concurrent responsibility for providing funds for carrying out the provisions of the Act... Therefore, funds payable to the State Government representing the Central Government's share towards discharging the RTE obligations need not be linked to NEP 2020,' the Division Bench observed. Since the Tamil Nadu government had already filed a civil suit before the Supreme Court demanding release of SSS funds of ₹2,151.59 crore, the judges said: 'We are not in a position to issue any binding direction in this regard,' and stopped with issuing a direction to the Centre to merely 'consider' delinking the RTE component from the SSS funds and disbursing the amount accordingly. T.N. cannot 'wiggle out' On the other hand, taking note of various judicial precedents, the Division Bench directed the State government to reimburse the private schools which make admissions under the RTE Act. 'The State government has an obligation to reimburse private unaided schools. Non-receipt of funds from the Union Government cannot be cited as a reason to wriggle out of this statutory obligation,' the court observed. The orders were passed while disposing of a public interest litigation petition which sought a direction to the State government to commence the RTE admissions for the academic year 2025-26 without any delay. Additional Advocate General J. Ravindran told the court that the State government was unable to reimburse the private schools on time due to non-receipt of Central funds. He said the ₹188.99 crore expenditure towards RTE reimbursement for the year 2022-23 was borne in entirety by the State government. In view of such complaints, the judges suo motu impleaded the Union Ministry of Education as one of the respondents to the case and requested Additional Solicitor General (ASG) A.R.L. Sundaresan to obtain necessary instructions. RTE obligations The ASG told the court that SSS was an integrated scheme that envisages education as a continuum from pre-school to Class 12, and that the scheme was aligned with the provisions of NEP 2020. Since the Tamil Nadu government had not agreed to implement NEP 2020, there were issues regarding the disbursement of funds. He also said that it was the primary responsibility of the State government to implement the RTE Act. Disagreeing with him, the judges said that both the Centre as well as the State governments were obligated to implement the Act. Authoring the judgement, Justice Swaminathan quoted former Chief Justice of the United States Earl Warren, saying: 'Today, education is perhaps the most important function of the state... It is doubtful any child may reasonably be expected to succeed in life if he is denied the opportunity of education.'

Long-pending central govt's infra projects in Belagavi back on track

Belagavi: Several long-pending central govt's infrastructure projects in and around Belagavi are finally gaining momentum after years of delay, primarily due to land acquisition hurdles. The breakthrough comes with the combined efforts of DC Mohammad Roshan and Belagavi MP Jagadish Shettar , who took these stalled projects as a top priority. Key among them is the much-awaited Belagavi-Dharwad railway line via Kittur, a 73-km project sanctioned in 2019 during the tenure of former MP and MoS for railways, the late Suresh Angadi. Despite funding from the Centre, the project was held up for years due to land-related issues. However, DC Roshan recently announced that land acquisition is now complete, and the work is expected to commence shortly. The Halaga-Macche bypass highway, a vital route connecting Pune-Bengaluru NH-4 and Belagavi-Goa national highway, sanctioned in 2009, also faced prolonged delay due to legal land disputes. With the district administration actively mediating and convincing landowners, the impasse has been resolved, and construction is underway. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Another major infrastructure project, the Belagavi Ring Road was sanctioned in 2018. The Rs 3,800 crore project to be executed in three phases, received Rs 1,622 crore for the first phase of 34 km. DC Roshan recently confirmed that 80% of the land acquisition is now complete. This ambitious project, sanctioned under the Bharatmala project, will help resolve the traffic congestion in Belagavi city. "Most of these projects were delayed despite being sanctioned, because of land-related issues. After I became MP, I prioritised these issues, met Union ministers, held review meetings with officials, and visited the sites. Today, we are seeing the results. I expect the required land to be fully acquired in the next 2-3 months and the tender process to begin within 5-6 months," said MP Jagadish Shettar. He credited DC Mohammad Roshan for playing a vital role in resolving bureaucratic and on-ground challenges related to land acquisition. In addition, Shettar informed that land acquisition for Belagavi-Hunagund-Raichur highway, a Rs 1,452 crore project, has also reached near completion. He further assured that the new terminal at Belagavi airport will be ready by March 2026, marking a step toward upgrading the facility to international standards.

Farmers rally for Kalasa Banduri Nala project

Dharwad: The Kalasa-Banduri Nala project aims at diverting Mahadayi water to Malaprabha River through Kalasa and Banduri Nala, to cater to the drinking water needs of Hubballi-Dharwad and other places in Malaprabha Command Area. Karnataka and Goa have been at loggerheads and stuck in legal entanglement regarding the project. Farmers in the region have been agitating for the speedy implementation of the project, for the last two decades but the states and the Centre have failed to take the issue to a logical end. In a recent development environmentalists from Goa and Karnataka jointly opposed the project and took out a rally at Belagavi, which has angered the farmers. Hundreds of farmers affiliated to various organisations, on Tuesday, took out a rally to protest the delay in implementing the project. They came in a procession from Kadapa Maidan protested in front of the DC's office.
