"You Hit My Father": Harbhajan Singh Reveals How S Sreesanth's Daughter's Reaction On IPL Slap-Gate Shattered Him

NDTV4 days ago
The inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) made several headlines not only because of its unique concept but also due to some controversial moments. The biggest controversy happened when Mumbai Indians captain Harbhajan Singh slapped Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) pacer Sreesanth, after a match between the two teams in Mohali. This incident went viral like a wildfire which left the ex-India pacer in tears and Harbhajan was banned from the remained of the tournament.
17 years have passed and both the cricketers have moved on from the incident and share a good relation with each other. On numerous occasions, the former spinner has apologised to Sreesanth for his actions. However, the scars of the incident are still there in Harbhajan's heart and he is not able to get over it.
In a recent interaction with ex-India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin, Harbhajan revealed a heartbreaking moment when Sreesanth's daughter refused to talk to him because of the 'slapgate' incident.
'One thing I'd want to change in my life is that incident with Sreesanth. I want to remove that incident from my career. That is the incident I would change from my list. What transpired was wrong and I shouldn't have done what I did. I apologised 200 times. What I felt so bad was even years after that incident, I have been apologising every opportunity or stage I get. It was a mistake,' said Harbhajan on Kutti Stories with Ash.
'What hurt me even after many years was when I met his daughter and I was talking to her with a lot of love and she said, 'I don't want to talk to you. You hit my father.' My heart was shattered and I was on the verge of tears. I was asking myself what is the impression I've left on her? She must be thinking of me in a poor light, right? She sees me as the guy who hit her father. I felt so bad. I still apologise to his daughter that I can't do anything,' he added.
Both Sreesanth and Harbhajan were a part of India's 2011 World Cup-winning squad.

RCB pacer Yash Dayal accused of raping minor; FIR registered in Jaipur

JAIPUR: IPL side Royal Challengers Bengaluru's under-fire pacer Yash Dayal has been accused of raping a minor in an FIR registered against him by Jaipur Police. The 27-year-old cricketer from Uttar Pradesh is already facing charges of sexual exploitation from a woman in Ghaziabad who has alleged that Dayal abused her after promising to marry her during a five-year relationship. SHO of Jaipur's Sanganer Sadar police station Anil Jaiman said that the latest FIR was registered on Wednesday. "FIR was registered against Yash Dayal for rape under relevant sections of POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) act and the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita)," he said here on Friday. According to Jaiman, the victim has alleged that the player raped her first in 2023 when she was 17 and a similar assault took place in April this year at a hotel in Sitapura area. "She alleged that the cricketer had promised help and support in her career. He contacted her in April this year when he was in Jaipur for IPL and called her to the hotel where he allegedly raped her again," the SHO said, adding that the matter was under investigation. Dayal, a medium pacer, is a reasonably well-known bowler in the Indian domestic circuit. He made his debut for Uttar Pradesh in 2018 and has since played 27 first-class games, claiming 84 wickets. He has appeared in 71 T20 matches that have yielded 66 scalps. Dayal started his IPL career with the Gujarat Titans in 2022 before moving to RCB, which bought him for Rs five crore in the 2024 players' auction. He was retained by the Bengaluru team for this year's season too and was a key member of the trophy-winning outfit under Rajat Patidar.

Joe Root Overtakes Dravid & Kallis To Become 3rd Highest Run Scorer In Tests

The ongoing India-England Test at Old Trafford is Root's 157th Test match for the English team. In 286 innings, he now has 13,290 runs to his credit. World No. 1 Test batter Joe Root on Friday (July 25) broke Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis' record to become the third leading run getter in Test cricket. Root, who made his Test debut for England in December 2012 against India in Nagpur, needed 31 runs in the ongoing fourth India-England Test to overtake Dravid and Kallis, and he achieved the objective in the morning session of the third day's play. Dravid played a total of 164 Tests from 1996 to 2012 and amassed a total of 13,288 runs, whereas Kallis 'called time on his Test career after scoring 13,289 runs in 166 matches. Most runs in Test cricket The ongoing Test match between India and England in Manchester is Root's 157th five-day format for the English team. He has 37 centuries and 66 half-centuries to his credit in Test matches. The overall record of scoring the most runs in Test cricket is in the name of Sachin Tendulkar. The legendary right-handed batter played 200 red-ball matches for India from 1989 to 2013 and scored 15,921 runs. Australia's Ricky Ponting is in 2nd place with 13,378 runs to his credit. Root needs to score at least 120 runs in the Manchester Test to break Ponting's record and become the second leading run getter in the five-day format of the game. Before becoming third leading run getter in Test cricket, Root entered his name in the record books by becoming first player in the world to score 1000 Test runs in Manchester. Root needed 22 runs to join the 1000-run club, and he achieved the objective during the 53rd over of England's first innings bowled by Jasprit Bumrah. Root has one century and seven half-centuries to his name in 12 Test matches played so far at Old Trafford, and the right-handed batter from Yorkshire would like to come up with another big show. view comments First Published: July 25, 2025, 16:26 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. UP Warriorz appoint Abhishek Nayar as head coach

Mumbai, Jul 25 (PTI) Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar was on Friday named as the head coach of the Women's Premier League (WPL) franchise UP Warriorz ahead of the fourth season of the competition. Nayar, who was removed as the Indian men's team assistant coach recently, less than a year into the job, joins UPW after the franchise parted ways with Jon Lewis, who had been in charge of the team for the last three seasons. This isn't Nayar's first association with the Warriorz as he also helped them during the team's off-season training camps in Bengaluru after the first edition of the league. Speaking on his appointment, Nayar said, 'I really enjoyed my time working with the UP Warriorz before and I'm thrilled to take on this new role. WPL is a fantastic platform for women's cricket and I'm looking forward to working closely with the management to build a strong team. 'UP Warriorz already have a strong foundation in place, and I believe we can build something truly special. There is incredible potential and I will give it my all to help win their first-ever title this season." Nayar, who represented Mumbai with distinction in first-class cricket, also played three ODIs for India before his retirement in 2019. Since then, he has made a name for himself in coaching and was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders support staff as their assistant coach during their triumphant IPL campaign in 2024. Several high-profile cricketers such as Dinesh Karthik and KL Rahul have talked about the positive turn that Nayar brought about in their game. He has also served as the coach of the KKR academy in 2018 and was the head coach of Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in Caribbean Premier League in 2022. Nayar was appointed as the Indian men's team's assistant coach after Gambhir Gambhir became its head coach and was part of the team that won the Champions Trophy in the UAE earlier this year. However, his contract was terminated after that and he returned as KKR's assistant coach for IPL 2025. Jinisha Sharma, director at Capri Sports, which owns the franchise, said, 'We believe that this appointment shows our strong intent to elevate the team's performance and push for greater success in the upcoming WPL season. 'With Abhishek Nayar's leadership, experience in coaching at the highest level and ability to bring out the best in players, the franchise is confident of a strong showing this season." Kshemal Waingankar, COO, UP Warriorz, said, 'Abhishek Nayar is one of the best brains in the business in global cricket, and we are delighted to have on our side as the head coach. 'We are excited about his vision for UP Warriorz, and we are confident that under his leadership, the team can provide its fans with many more memorable moments in the future."
