What Is The OMAD Diet That Has Celebs Like Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar Talking?
Last Updated:
Shah Rukh Khan has spoken publically about his eating habits, revealing in past interviews, including one in August 2024, that he often eats just once a day.
In the ever-evolving world of weight loss, where fads come and go with every scroll of social media, a new dietary phenomenon is stirring both intrigue and controversy: the OMAD diet – short for 'One Meal A Day." The extreme regimen, which involves consuming all daily calories in a single sitting while fasting for the remaining 23 hours, is reportedly being followed by some of the most high-profile celebrities, including superstar Shah Rukh Khan and filmmaker Karan Johar.
OMAD has become a hot topic online, capturing public curiousity as influencers and fans speculate about its role in sculpting leaner physiques. The diet's premise is simple, if stark: eat one large meal during a fixed one-hour window, then consume nothing but water for the rest of the day. The method has gained traction as a shortcut to rapid weight loss and improved metabolic health.
Shah Rukh Khan has spoken publically about his eating habits, revealing in past interviews, including one in August 2024, that he often eats just once a day. Though Khan has cautioned others against blindly following his routine, fans remain captivated by the idea that such a strict approach might be the secret behind his enduring fitness.
Filmmaker Karan Johar added fuel to the trend when he shared during an Instagram Live session, as reported by India Today, that he too adheres to a highly restrictive eating plan. He acknowledged relying on a one-meal-a-day format to shed excess weight, underscoring the extent to which celebrities are experimenting with minimalistic diets.
Yet while the star power behind OMAD adds allure, medical professionals urge caution. Dr Rakesh Gupta, Senior Consultant at Apollo Hospital, warns that the diet's simplicity masks significant risks. 'People are attracted to the idea of rapid weight loss, and fasting for 23 hours can create a calorie deficit. But this approach, when done without supervision, can lead to nutrient deficiencies and long-term health issues," Dr Gupta explained.
According to Dr Gupta, OMAD might offer short-term benefits like reduced body fat and lower blood sugar – especially for individuals struggling with obesity or prediabetes. However, he stressed that not everyone is suited for such a regimen, and the potential downsides, including fatigue, hormonal imbalance, and compromised immunity, must be considered.
The resurgence of fasting diets is nothing new. From intermittent fasting to 5:2 protocols, the appeal lies in structure and simplicity. But OMAD stands out for its intensity, which makes it a controversial choice in the nutrition community.

Kajol has expressed her views on potential sequels to her iconic films, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, stating that some love stories are best left untouched. She believes the magic of DDLJ lies in its perfect ending, while recreating the eternal love of KKHH would be challenging in today's world. Kajol is setting the record straight on sequels to her classic films. As she gears up for the release of her upcoming horror film Maa, the actress shared her candid and hilarious take on the idea of a Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge or Kuch Kuch Hota Hai sequel—revealing why some love stories are better left untouched. In a chat with Pinkvilla, Kajol was asked about the possibility of a sequel to the iconic 1995 film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, in which she starred opposite Shah Rukh Khan . While she admitted she'd love the idea in theory, Kajol humorously confessed that she simply can't imagine a DDLJ 2 happening. The actress explained her stance with a touch of humor, saying that every film carries its own magic, and DDLJ was no different. She joked that no one really wants to know what happened after the iconic train scene—whether the couple ended up arguing over mundane things like diapers. For her, the magic lies in leaving that fairytale ending untouched. She also added that the beauty of DDLJ lies in its ending, calling it 'brilliant' that the story wraps up as the train leaves. She believes it's best left to the audience's imagination—preserving the magic of 'happily ever after' without delving into what happens next. When asked about the possibility of a Kuch Kuch Hota Hai sequel, Kajol, who starred alongside Shah Rukh Khan in the film, reflected on how it belonged to a different era—one where audiences believed deeply in eternal love.
