Eddie Hill, former Dolphins and Rams running back, dead at 67
The Dolphins announced Hill's death in a post on social media.
"We are saddened by the passing of former Dolphins running back Eddie Hill, who played for the team from 1981-84," the team wrote on X.
No official cause of death was announced. Nearly eight years ago, Hill opened up to the Sun-Sentinel about his health issues and revealed he had battled brain cancer. He told the paper he believed he was also dealing with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, which is believed to be caused by repeated blows to the head.
"Every life has a purpose and football was one of those biblical, scriptural things that I learned early in life that applied to me, the gift," he told the paper in May 2017, adding he had no regrets about playing the sport.
"And recently, in the last 10-15 years, I've learned that purpose and I live that purpose."
The Rams chose Hill in the second round of the 1979 NFL Draft out of Memphis.
He played for Los Angeles for two seasons, including a Super Bowl appearance in his rookie year. The Rams fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XIV.
He was traded to Miami before the start of the 1981 season. He played four more years with the Dolphins before calling it a career.
He appeared in 75 games and had 443 rushing yards with two rushing touchdowns. As a special teams player, he had 17 total kick returns for 330 yards.

NFL preseason live updates: Commanders starters run through porous Bengals defense; are they moving on from Brian Robinson Jr.?
[NFL top storylines | NFL team feeds | NFL camp/preseason live blog] Three-year starting Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. appears to be on his way out. The Commanders may have demonstrated why Monday night. With Robinson sidelined amid reported trade rumors, Washington ran roughshod over a porous Bengals defense as both teams played their starters early. The Commanders exploded for a four-play, 73-yard touchdown drive on their opening possession without throwing a pass. Running back Chris Rodriguez broke free for a 40-yard run to set up quarterback Jayden Daniels for a 14-yard touchdown scramble through and past multiple hapless Bengals defenders. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Then came Jacory Croskey-Merritt's time to shine. The seventh-round rookie out of Arizona took the starring role on Washington's second drive with 32 rushing yards as the Commanders needed just three plays to score their second touchdown of the game. Croskey-Merritt capped the drive with a 27-yard touchdown run. By halftime, Rodriguez had six carries for 62 yards (10.3 ypc) and Croskey-Merritt had 32 yards on two carries (16 ypc). Deebo Samuel (1 carry, 19 yards) and Daniels (1 carry, 14 yards) had also gashed the Bengals defense for big gains. Washington tallied 130 yards on 13 first-half carries (10 yards per attempt) against a Bengals defense that looked just as bad as it did during the regular season in 2024. It's always hard to trust your eyes in the preseason. But Cincinnati's run defense did little to inspire confidence, while Washington may have set its running back room without Robinson in the mix. NFL top storylines Browns name Joe Flacco starting quarterback for Week 1: The Cleveland Browns announced Monday that Joe Flacco will start Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals, a move that has been expected for a while and is now official. That hardly ends the intrigue on the Browns' depth chart, though, with presumptive backup Kenny Pickett having yet to take an in-game snap this preseason due to injury, fifth-round rookie Shedeur Sanders still battling an oblique injury, and third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel having looked solid in his debut over the weekend. With Flacco getting playing time in Saturday's preseason finale, snaps will be even more scarce for the other three QBs on the roster. How will this shake out? Matthew Stafford returns to Rams practice: Breathe a sigh of relief, Los Angeles Rams fans and fantasy players. Matthew Stafford finally returned to practice on Monday after battling an aggravated disc in his back and took part in team drills. Head coach Sean McVay said he thought Stafford did a good job, but opted to play things carefully, deeming Stafford as day-to-day and week-to-week. McVay called it a "very fluid" situation and said while it was "great" that Stafford was able to get back to practice, the team will see how he responds the rest of the day and Tuesday. Browns sign WR Isaiah Bond, gave him lie detector test: The Cleveland Browns reportedly signed wide receiver Isaiah Bond to a three-year, $3 million deal Monday after he was not charged as part of a sexual assault investigation. Bond, 21, was expected to be a mid-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft but went undrafted after being arrested just two weeks before the draft. On Thursday, Bond was "no-billed" by a grand jury in Texas, meaning there was not enough evidence to charge him. As part of that diligence, the team apparently had Bond go through an independent polygraph test, per team general manager Andrew Berry. Steelers' Mike Tomlin Explains Why Aaron Rodgers is 'Contagious'
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Pittsburgh Steelers decided to swing big this offseason, acquiring quarterback Aaron Rodgers, wide receiver D.K. Metcalf and cornerback Jalen Ramsey to help them make a strong Super Bowl push. Obviously, Rodgers is the biggest name of the bunch, and after a forgettable year with the New York Jets in 2024, the future Hall-of-Famer seems ready to re-establish himself as an elite signal-caller this fall. More news: 49ers Trade Proposal Lands Major Christian McCaffrey Insurance Of course, Rodgers is 41 years old, so there are a whole lot of people doubting whether or not he can still play at a high level. That being said, he did throw for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last season, so perhaps the talk of his demise has been largely exaggerated. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin seems very excited to get things going with Rodgers under center, and he is already appreciating the significant effect that the four-time MVP has had on his teammates. "He loves football," Tomlin said, via Mike Jones of The Athletic. "That's the thing that's on the tip of my tongue. He displays it daily. He has a love affair with this game — one that he's willing to share with others. He's passionate about it, and I think it's contagious." The franchise has not won a playoff game since January 2017, and that's in spite of making five postseason appearances since then. Poor quarterback play has been a major problem in Steel City for the last several years, so maybe Rodgers can change things? There is reason to have trepidation when it comes to Rodgers. He really hasn't been great since 2021, when he totaled 37 touchdowns and four picks en route to winning his second straight MVP award with the Green Bay Packers. He looked very mortal in 2022, missed all but one series of his debut campaign with the Jets in 2023 due to a torn Achilles and went just 5-12 last year. That being said, there is plenty of reason to still have faith in Rodgers, who looked very impressive for stretches in 2024 and could strongly benefit from playing for a team that has not posted a losing record since 2003. More news: Raiders Outlook Hints Geno Smith Move Was Big Mistake Let's face it: no one has been able to succeed with the Jets for the last decade-and-a-half, so maybe, just maybe, Rodgers wasn't the problem there. The Steelers could definitely afford to add some proven depth at wide receiver, but perhaps Rodgers can get the most out of youngsters like Roman Wilson and Calvin Austin III. And of course, he has Metcalf, too. For more on the Steelers and NFL, head to Newsweek Sports.
