The stretch will not be opened till 6 pm on Wednesday, by which time the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (
NHIDCL
) is hoping to complete the repair works.
'A stretch of around 30 km of NH10, between Sevoke and Chitrey, would have to be shut down from 8 pm on August 3 to 6 pm on August 6,' the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) issued an order on Sunday evening.
The order has been issued by general manager of
Siliguri
NHIDCL Rahul Kumar Gupta. The order stated 'the damages have raised serious concerns about the safety of commuters, prompting authorities to act to prevent any mishaps.'
Live Events
The highway, which is often prone to natural disasters, connects Sikkim's capital
Gangtok
to West Bengal's Siliguri at the foothills. The closure of the highway is also expected to affect traffic to Kalimpong.
The Kalimpong Police have asked small vehicles heading to Gangtok from Siliguri to take alternative routes, via Damdim-Gorubathan-Lava-Alagarah and Bagrakote-Lava-Alagarah.
However, the movement of heavy vehicles between Siliguri and Gangtok has been stopped.

Govt aims to accelerate pace of highway construction to 100 km/day: Gadkari

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday said the government's aim is to accelerate the pace of highway construction to 100 km a day from 38 km/day at present. Speaking at the Business Today India@100 event, Gadkari said so far this year, the road ministry has awarded highways projects worth Rs 2.5 lakh crore, and by March next year, it will award highways projects worth Rs 10 lakh crore. We aim to accelerate the pace of highway construction to 100 km a day. This is our target, whether it will happen next year, I can not say," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo The ministry constructed 10,660 km of national highways in 2024-25, 12,349 km in 2023-24 and 10,331 km in 2022-23. Responding to the growing concern over social media about E20, rolled out by the government, is damaging the vehicle and there is no reduction in fuel cost, Gadkari rejected the claim, saying that the petroleum sector is lobbying against this move. Live Events "I challenge, if anyone has faced difficulty in his vehicle on account of mixing of ethanol in petrol," Gadkari, who is known for his frank views, said. The minister further said that Pune-based Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) conducts trials and comes up with reports before the government takes a call on ethanol blending. Currently, Indian vehicles can run on E20 petrol with minor changes to the engine to prevent corrosion and other issues. In 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched petrol blended with 20 per cent ethanol. The Indian government will introduce guidelines for 27 per cent ethanol blending in petrol by the end of August. Ethanol, which can be produced from sugarcane, broken rice and other agricultural products, is expected to help reduce India's dependence on foreign oil. India is currently the world's third-largest oil consumer and imports about 88 per cent of its crude oil requirements, making it vulnerable to geopolitical vagaries that can impact crude prices. Gadkari reiterated that his aim is to make India's automobile industry number one in the world. The size of the Indian automobile industry is now Rs 22 lakh crore. Presently, the size of the US automobile industry is Rs 78 lakh crore, followed by China (Rs 47 lakh crore) and India (Rs 22 lakh crore). According to the minister, the automobile industry has created 4.5 crore jobs till now -- the highest in the country. Gadkari also said the days are not far away when prices of electric vehicles (EVs) will be less than those of petrol vehicles in the country within six months. The minister also said India's logistics cost will come down to 9 per cent by December this year. In China, the logistics cost is 8 per cent, and in the US and European countries, it is 12 per cent, the minister said. Gadkari also emphasised the need to increase the productivity of the agriculture sector.

‘Watch before you get scammed': Gurgaon man's viral video reveals what not to do at a petrol pump tyre shop

A man from Gurugram has sparked widespread conversation online after exposing an alleged scam at a petrol pump tyre shop, a warning that has hit home for many Indian motorists. Pranay Kapoor shared a now-viral video on Instagram, revealing how a routine tyre check turned into an Rs 8,000 mistake. His ordeal began when his car's dashboard flashed a low tyre pressure warning. Expecting a quick fix, he drove into a nearby fuel station. But what happened next left him stunned. He lifted the car using a jack, sprayed soapy water on the tyre, and began scraping it right in front of Kapoor. A screw lodged in the tread was found, but then came more 'bad news'. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pranay Kapoor (@pranaykapooor) The worker claimed there were three more punctures. Each, he said, would need a 'mushroom patch' costing Rs 300. That brought the total repair bill to Rs 1,200 on the spot. Live Events Feeling suspicious, Kapoor declined the repair and took the tyre to a trusted garage. There, a mechanic confirmed only one actual puncture. The other 'holes', he said, looked freshly made, likely with a sharp tool often used in such tyre scams. With the tyre compromised, Kapoor had no option but to replace it entirely. The final bill? Rs 8,000. 'Don't make the expensive mistake I made. Share this video with your friends and family to warn them,' he said in the video, titled "Got Scammed at a Petrol Pump Tyre Shop". The post quickly gained traction on Instagram, with many others coming forward with similar experiences. The comments section was flooded with relatable stories. 'Oh shoot, this has happened with me at least thrice now over the past nine months!' wrote Sarthak Ahuja, a chartered accountant. Another user added, 'Wish I had seen this video yesterday. Same thing happened with me, ended up paying them.' 'Same thing happened with me in Bangalore and he charged me Rs 600 for each patch. Eventually had to change my tyre. I guess I was scammed too,' shared a third. While not all fuel stations are involved in such practices, Kapoor's video has cast a spotlight on a scam that appears more common than many thought. From Gurugram to Bengaluru, motorists say they've had similar run-ins with dubious roadside tyre repairs.
