From risque to wholesome: Tinder now lets users go on group dates
Tired of swiping solo on Tinder?
Well, you can now bring a BFF along for the ride, turning a risque twosome into a more wholesome foursome.
Tinder – the world's largest dating app – has rolled out a new 'Double Date' feature that allows its users to create joint profiles with friends to match with other pairs.
To get started with Double Date, users can choose up to three friends to form pairs with. They can then browse and 'like' other pairs.
When two pairs 'like' each other, a group chat automatically opens, making it easy for all four people to connect and coordinate plans.
Double Date also lets users privately message someone from a matched pair if they prefer shifting to a one-on-one chat. Users can join pairs while keeping their personal dating profile separate and active.
Women have been more into the group dynamic, tests in Europe and Latin America show, Tinder said.
They are three times more likely to show interest in paired profiles compared to individual ones.
Group chats have also sparked more conversation, with users sending around 35 per cent more messages than in typical one-on-one chats.
Tinder plans on rolling out Double Dates globally in July.
Tinder head of product marketing Cleo Long told the Los Angeles Times the feature is meant to help relieve dating stress for younger users, especially the generation born between 1997 and 2012 – Gen Z.
'This is a social-first experience that's really meant to help relieve some of the pressure that we know a lot of Gen Z experiences with dating by making it more social, more fun and bringing your friends in to help reinforce that comfort piece,' the Tinder representative said.
Tinder said nine in 10 of those who tried Double Date were under 29.
Double Date is also bringing new users to Tinder. About 15 per cent of those who accepted Double Date invitations were either completely new to Tinder or returning after a period of inactivity.
Rekindling that loving feeling
Tinder, owned by Match Group, has been introducing new features as it tries to stem a bleeding in its paying user base.
It saw a 7 per cent decline in subscriptions in the first quarter of 2025, in line with a broader pattern that saw the app's subscription numbers shrink from more than 11 million in late 2022 to roughly 9.1 million today.
That is in step with the overall picture in the online dating app industry.
Dating apps were downloaded 237 million times globally in 2023, down from 287 million in 2020.
According to research firm Sensor Tower, the number of people who use them at least once a month has dwindled from 154 million in 2021 to 137 million in the second quarter of 2024.
Mr Spencer Rascoff, who was appointed Match chief executive in February to tackle the slowdown in user engagement, stepped in to lead Tinder directly.
Mr Rascoff said dating apps like Tinder are falling out of favour with younger users because many saw them as a 'numbers game'.
He believes features like Double Date can help shift perceptions, calling it less 'hook-uppy' and more about having 'a good time as friends'.

Malaysia to build 50% more gas-fired power capacity to meet data centre demand
[KUALA LUMPUR] Malaysia is expected to add 6-8 gigawatts of gas-fired power by 2030 to address growing electricity consumption driven by demand from data centres, an industry official said. The country is expected to see the fastest surge in data centre power demand in South-east Asia, with its share of electricity consumed by data centres in the region to triple to 21 per cent by 2027 from 7 per cent in 2022, a joint report in May by Bain & Co with others including Google and Temasek showed. Rising gas demand could see Malaysia, the fifth-largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), start importing the super-chilled fuel in four to five years, the head of state energy firm Petronas told the Energy Asia conference this week. Megat Jalaluddin, CEO of state utility Tenaga Nasional, said he expects Malaysia to add 6-8 gigawatts of gas-fired power by building new plants and extending the life of existing ones as it looks to cut dependence on coal. That represents a 40-54 per cent increase from the current 15 GW of gas-fired capacity. Total power consumption in Malaysia is on track to increase 30 per cent by 2030, and Malaysia has already invited industry proposals for supply, he said. 'We want to phase out coal responsibly. "I think it's okay to look at your kids and sort of just not know what to do, because that is a way that you can connect with your children, because half of the time they don't know what to do as well," Saldana, a mother of three, told Reuters. "Elio" debuts in movie theaters on Friday. The film follows a lonely eleven-year-old boy named Elio Solis, voiced by Yonas Kibreab, who unintentionally becomes the intergalactic ambassador of Earth after being sent to a planet called Communiverse. He must work with alien lifeforms, eventually realizing that he is not alone. Film critics have applauded the movie from Pixar, the famed animation studio behind "Toy Story" and "Finding Nemo." "Elio" has earned an 81% positive score in reviews collected on the Rotten Tomatoes website. Hollywood studios, however, have faced challenges in drawing audiences to theaters for films with original stories. "Elio" may debut with some of the lowest opening weekend ticket sales of any movie from Pixar, according to industry analysts. From Friday through Sunday, "Elio" is expected to bring in between $20 million and $30 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters, said Shawn Robbins, founder and owner of Box Office Theory and director of analytics for Fandango. Disney projects an opening around $25 million. In the movie, Saldana voices Olga Solis, Elio's aunt who takes care of him, alongside Brad Garrett as Lord Grigon, a bulky, worm-like alien warlord, father and ambassador. Garrett, a father of two, noted that Grigon has his own parenting journey in the film that starts off a little rocky. 'There's so many over-controlling parents, right? That tried to mold their kid into what they had wanted to be, or what they think they should be,' Garrett said, referring to Grigon. The "Everybody Loves Raymond" actor said "Elio" is a movie that speaks to how everyone is unique, and children have their own path. Kibreab echoed this, saying that he believes the film is rooted in families that support one another fully. "They're always going to be there for you whenever you need a shoulder to lean on and also if you're feeling doubt or feeling lonely," he said. For co-director Domee Shi, feeling isolated at a point in her life helped her create the character Elio. 'This is about the weird kid before they've made any friends, when they are just feeling so alone,' the 'Turning Red' director said. 'I feel like I went on that journey. Definitely at some point in my life as a kid too, I felt like that weird, artsy kid who was the only kid in Toronto that watched anime at some point, but once I went to animation school and I found my people, that's when I felt like I opened up,' she added.
